BIG East...much smaller
The Miami Hurricanes are reportedly exploring the option of joining the ACC. Syracuse and Boston College have also been linked to a new expanded Atlantic Coast Conference.
The benefits for the ACC are obvious. Miami's football excellence, plus Syracuse's reputation as the defending basketball champs and Boston College with....really nice uniforms and they once had Scoony Penn. However, can the Big East survive losing 3 quality schools? Was the Big East too big anyway and this will just increase competition among the remaining schools??? Discuss...

I dont think it'll survive especially without Miami in Football and the 'Cuse in bball. it'll be a laughing stock. But Pitt will do great.

I've heard the REAL reason for interest is that the ACC will then have enough teams to put on a men's basketball conference championship. Bucks, my friends, they want the big bucks.
However, I have always wondered, as I see Ohio State play Michigan play Penn State play Michigan State, etc, how Miami, Florida, and Florida State are not in the same league and don't need to play every year. I mean, don't you gotta prove your the best in the state before you start claiming the national title? This would swing Florida State and Miami into the same conference. However, I just don't see this idea flying. The ACC is reaching to far. Would be a good move for Miami, though. They can't compete in Big East basketball anyway, and the ACC right now may be a weaker football conference than the Big East. Theres some issues at FSU... No, the Big East would not survive. You could not take marquee temas and hope to sell your broadcast rights (money again). Something else would need to happen. |

Louisville wants out of CUSA and is looking to move to either the ACC or Big East. UL has been dropped from the ACC rumors lately, but those had Miami, VT, and UL to ACC instead of BC and 'Cuse. If those three leave the Big East, I wouldnt be suprised to see UL, Cincinnati and maybe Memphis hop into the Big East to fill it back up.

Florida State always plays Miami and Florida once a year. With Miami in the conference the rivalry will be alot better. I hate Miami.. but I think it will help the ACC. As far as Basketball goes we have a good solid conference and bringing syracuse, miami and BC in won't really do a whole lot for that aspect. Sure Syracuse is the defending Nat'l champions.. but really how often is that going to happen. Duke is always a contender for the title..and until recently so was UNC. I like the idea of the big east teams moving over to the ACC for the football stage..for Basketball I don't really care one way or the other.

Why couldn't the Big East just let Miami go, then go recruit a school to take their place. As far as I know, Notre Dame is still an independant as far as football goes, but they are already in the Big East in basketball. I really don't know how these things work, but I do know with the Irishs' popularity the Big East would probably be better off than they were with Miami.

The reason that the ACC wants to expand from 9 schools to 12 is so they can have a Conference Championship football game. They are looking to generate more revenue, and the ACC is a weak football conference. Miami, Syracuse and BC would lend the conference some football credibility. Yes, they already have FSU and Maryland has been decent the last couple of years, but after that there is a steep dropoff. When was the last time that Duke won a football game against a decent school?
There is an upside to those schools leaving the Big East. The Big East gets an automatic BCS bid and without those three, Pitt would clean up.

It all comes down to money in the end. The ACC can make more money with a 12 teams a conference championship game in football. Not to mention they get their hands on the lucrative Miami and Boston markets.
I don't have a problem with Miami joining the ACC. However I really don't think Syracuse and BC fit the league. The ACC has always been a more southern league, VT, WVU, or Pitt would be a better fit than either Syracuse or BC. But once again it all comes down to money. It's kind of a messy business, the Big East will basically fall the wayside unless they can convince some quality schools to come in. Sadly though, this is how it has to be. The ACC and the Big East are two of the only big conferences without a championship game and like I and others have said, that championship game means money. When it comes down to it, the ACC is a more ambitious and powerful league so it will survive. Also, Leander, the Big East won't keep its BCS bid when the current contracts run out if they lose these three teams without adding some other big names. The good news from all this is that the ACC could become the best conference in both basketball and football hands down within the next five years. Good time to be an ACC fan but sad to see the old tradition go.
