Jeremy Shockey speaks...does anyone care?
It's good to see that college educations don't go to waste on athletes......
ESPN says On ESPN.com: The season hasn't even started, yet Jeremy Shockey is getting a head start … off the field. The New York Giants tight end ripped into new Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, calling him a "homo" among other comments in an upcoming story for New York magazine, the New York Daily News reported Friday. "Let's see how much Parcells wins this year," Shockey is quoted as saying about the former Giants coach in the magazine issue that will be released Monday. "I'll make him pay when we play them. The homo." Shockey, who at 22 is entering his second NFL season, reportedly went on to call Parcells a quitter. "He says he quits, then he wants to come back and coach," Shockey said in the interview. "Do something. Stay in commentary or stay in football or get the hell out of everybody's life." After the Giants' preseason game against the Patriots on Thursday night, Shockey denied making those strong quotes in the magazine article. "I really don't want to comment on something that's just not true," Shockey told the Daily News. "I'm 100-percent sure I didn't say that … I think he [the writer] got it mixed up from something my friend may have called him [Parcells]." But the reporter for the New York magazine story, Chris Smith, told the newspaper Thursday that he has the interview on tape. Smith told the Daily News that Shockey "went on at great length … how he's [Parcells] a publicity hound, how Shockey's gonna make him pay when they play. He ended this monologue by calling him 'the homo.' It's 100-percent accurate." Smith has been a writer for New York magazine for 15 years. Shockey also seem bothered by comments Parcells made about him when the coach was a TV commentator. "All my buddies are like, 'Why's he dogging you?'" Shockey told the magazine. According to Shockey, they'd say, "After you catch a pass on him this year, you oughtta throw it right at his fat head!" Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon told the Daily News, "Jeremy is adamant about the fact that he did not say what he's being portrayed as saying. It sounds to me like there was a miscommunication about what was said in the conversation." But before Shockey's denial, Hanlon told the newspaper the team was concerned. "Jeremy is learning that there is no such thing as a throwaway line. Obviously those sentiments do not represent those of our organization." Parcells won two Super Bowls with the Giants and nearly led the Jets back to the gridiron promised land, making him a revered sports figure in New York. As for Shockey, he is known for his demonstrative behavior on the field. A rookie who made the Pro Bowl, Shockey was fined $10,000 for throwing a cup of ice into the stands and making an obscene gesture during last season's first-round playoff loss at San Francisco. He was also "fired" from a WFAN-New York radio show after not calling in for his weekly appearance for the second time in two months. Mike Francesa and Chris Russo responded by calling him "unprofessional". Shockey has also apologized for comments he made about gays during an interview on Howard Stern's radio show in September 2002. During the interview, Stern asked Shockey if he thought there were any gay players in the NFL. "I don't know,'' Shockey said on the show. "I don't like to think about that. I hope not.'' Shockey also was asked if he had any gay teammates when he played at the University of Miami. "No. I mean, if I knew there was a gay guy on my college football team, I probably wouldn't, you know, stand for it. You know, I think, you know, they're going to be in the shower with us and stuff, so I don't think that's gonna work." Shockey was named Rookie of the Year after setting Giants tight-end records with 74 catches for 894 yards, the second most in NFL history in each category for the position.

More than Piazza, more than Jeter, Shockey is the "it" boy in New York at the moment. Everything he says, does, and everywhere he goes is captured. I'm not sure what he said or didn't say, but he should know better. It's alot better for high profile athletes to just keep their mouths shut. Of course, then we say "Michael Jordan never STOOD for anything," or "Barry Bonds is SO reclusive. How awful." Shockey isn't about to keep a low profile. New York is his for the taking, he benefits from the pub, so he needs to take his lumps with his sugar.

I'm not a Giants fan, but I think Shockey has the tools to go far in this league, if he doesn't get his career ended by a cheap hit from a team he talked TOO much smack about. You're right, Gov, NY loves a loudmouth, when he plays for us (unlike John Rocker). They love when someone very smugly guarantees something, and then delivers (Namath, Messier). But there's a line that he needs to be very careful not to step over. Going after Bill Parcells, who coached two Giants teams to Super Bowls, turned the Jets around, and is a future Hall of Famer revered in New York, might not have been the best idea. I can't stand Mike and the Dog, so I'm not going to get too pissed off at him for standing them up, but he should at least have had the courtesy to break off his own deal with WFAN if he didn't want to do the show anymore. And if this reporter produces the tape, then Shockey better damn well have another Pro Bowl season and take the Giants into the playoffs and beat Dallas twice (in other words, back your shit up) or the media will run him out of town. -Mikey Last edited by MikeyChalupa; 08-08-2003 at 08:29 AM.. |

Iceman, you're missing out then.
Shockey is a great player, and a decent guy overall. The thing is, he doesn't care what he says to the media, which just leads to interesting stories like this. Besides, if Bill attacks the way he plays he's insane. Any coach in the league would love to have a Jeremy Shockey. He's one of the best at running with the ball because he has the mix of speed and power, he can catch the ball, and he provides the energy that many teams need.

Actually, no. For reference purposes look under: Rocker, John. or the Greek, Jimmy. or Campanis, Al. or Hudson, Kate. (recent French/American comments) or...... As long as there are athletes, celebrities, "man on the street" or whomever being interviewed, you will get honest answers. They may not be politically correct, but they are what the individual thinks. Sometimes I find minimal comfort in knowing what an person really thinks, at least I know they are not blowing smoke up my butt.

Just for the record, Dan LeBatard basically said that if he wasn't in NY, he'd be Todd Heap. Heap is the TE for the Ravens and would likely beat Shockey in any competition short of a "making an ass of yourself" one.

What references?
John Rocker never came back after he made those comments. He is history. Jimmy the Greek was fired and never got back into the limelight. So you are saying he is not a dumbass, but his career is over? Celebrities and athletes need to learn to keep their mouth shut and stay politically correct. If they dont, the media will hang them. Especially if they are a well known player. Look at Kobe. Granted, this is something he did and not said, the media has made a circus out of this. Do you think the same would happen for a 2nd string CBA player that no one has ever heard of? Shockey is an idiot. He is not doubt talented, but he is an idiot. Quote:

I really don't care what Shockey has to say. Unfortunately for him, other players and coaches in the league probably do, and he will be rewarded with numerous cheap shots throughout his career until he learns to keep his mouth shut or until one of them ends his career.

Dumbass - yes. Career over - no. As long as he maintains the same level of play, he'll have a job, and a very fruitful one at that. My point was that he was not the first "celebrity" to state his actual beliefs when they were not politically correct. If that was prerequisite to a career decline, the line for failing careers starts behind Ty Cobb and just keeps on going. This is even more amazing in this day and age when pro sports leagues are doing everything they can to "train" their youngest athletes in correct behavior. Every NFL rookie attends classes sponsored by the league to help them go from the most popular kid on the block, to the wealthiest kid on the block. I am sure among the topics discussed are what not to say when a reporter sticks a microphone in your face. I guess the thing that amazes me most is that nothing that Shockey said is original, even for him, but that he hasn't learn from past experience that when the question is asked, regardless of your personal beliefs, there are the PC answers that must be given, or you will suffer the consequences. To quote "Bull Durham": Crash Davis: It's time to work on your interviews. Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: My interviews? What do I gotta do? Crash Davis: You're gonna have to learn your clichés. You're gonna have to study them, you're gonna have to know them. They're your friends. Write this down: "We gotta play it one day at a time." Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: Got to play... it's pretty boring. Crash Davis: 'Course it's boring, that's the point. Write it down.

I don't really have a problem with Shockey or what he says, but I think he should have thought twice before making a comment about someone as respected as Parcells. When he made the comments about Shockey, he was talking about an unproven tight end (at that moment) who ran over a couple of Houston Texans. But they are both definitely entitled to their opinions. I don't know why people are making such a big deal about the "homo" comment. They should audio record an NFL huddle, I'm sure there would be a lot of players in trouble because of their "potty" mouths. Give the guy a break.

People bring up his lack of TD's as reason why he isn't worthy of talking smack...but the Giants as a team didn't score many TD's the first half of the year and when they did go on the great offensive run it was because the recievers are open because they are double-teaming Shockey...the guy is the real deal. As for his mouth, he's young and doesn't realize yet that he needs to watch what he says around the media...the Giants will correct that ... And as for Dan LeBetard in ESPN the magazine who railed against Shockey...goes to show just how little he really knows about football!
Go Big Blue!!!!!

Another problem with text is it often doesn't convey a person's feelings, or context the way sound does. According to Shockey he said it in a passing manner jokingly.
And as for anyone saying Shockey isn't good enough, they haven't seen him play. The game against the Texans last year is a great example of how Shockey plays and exactly why he is good. He catches a pass and starts running down the sideline and sees a CB is coming his way. Now, most guys would either run out of bounds because they don't want to take any hit, they would move straight and let themselves be pushed out of bounds, not Shockey, he bowled the guy right over and proceeded to gain 20 or so more yards.
