Dumbass - yes. Career over - no. As long as he maintains the same level of play, he'll have a job, and a very fruitful one at that. My point was that he was not the first "celebrity" to state his actual beliefs when they were not politically correct. If that was prerequisite to a career decline, the line for failing careers starts behind Ty Cobb and just keeps on going.
This is even more amazing in this day and age when pro sports leagues are doing everything they can to "train" their youngest athletes in correct behavior. Every NFL rookie attends classes sponsored by the league to help them go from the most popular kid on the block, to the wealthiest kid on the block. I am sure among the topics discussed are what not to say when a reporter sticks a microphone in your face.
I guess the thing that amazes me most is that nothing that Shockey said is original, even for him, but that he hasn't learn from past experience that when the question is asked, regardless of your personal beliefs, there are the PC answers that must be given, or you will suffer the consequences. To quote "Bull Durham":
Crash Davis: It's time to work on your interviews.
Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: My interviews? What do I gotta do?
Crash Davis: You're gonna have to learn your clichés. You're gonna have to study them, you're gonna have to know them. They're your friends. Write this down: "We gotta play it one day at a time."
Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: Got to play... it's pretty boring.
Crash Davis: 'Course it's boring, that's the point. Write it down.
