i measure 5'8" which i consider to be at the bottom end of average height. the other day my friend was showing me the personal pages he was looking through on a website and i couldn't believe what i saw.... 90% of all the adds were asking for a guy to be taller than 6 feet. this is including the ad's from girls who were short, from 4'11" to 5'2"! now before anyone brings it up i understand the angles of caveman kind of instinct/father figure psychology and i understand the whole "i've to to do a projection equation for when i go out in high heels" angles on the topic. i also understand wanting someone close to your height if you're a girl and you're taller than 6 feet yourself. but heres what i was wondering....

1) why do you think this discrimination is coming from short girls? isn't having a guy thats half a foot taller than you enough to slow dance with and feel masculinely embraced and safe? do you really wear heels often enough that it's worth cutting the entire 5'8 - 5'10 bracket out?

2) how many of you girls have gone out with shorter guys? how did that work for you?

3)it's a little more common, but i'd also like to hear from guys who dated taller girls. i've done so myself and it went off without a hitch. i loved it and still am attracted to girls that seem to be too tall for some of my friends.

Im 5'2 so most guys are taller than me anyway hehehehe and even if I wear my 5 inch dominatrix heels it only makes me 5'7

I'm 5'9" and rarely ever wear heels, I've dated guys as short as 5'5" -- he seemed to have more of a problem with it than I did - I think the day he was strugging to reach something off a top shelf in my apartment and I just up and grabbed it (I also have long arms) I think he saw that as an affront to his masculinity.

I'm 6'3, and have never had a problem with any girls height. I even dated a girl for the longest time that was only only 4'11. She used to love it when we'd dance and her feet would be a foot off the ground.
On the other hand, I do think I'd be uncomfortable dancing with my feet a foot off the ground.

I'm 6'4" so the issue has never really come up.

Though during my days as a bartender in Germany, I got to know a girl who I estimated to have a height of 6'8" (When she wasn't wearing heels). She was a really nice girl, and I can tell you that height wasn't an issue with her though I suspect it was because she was taller than just about every guy she knew. I can also say that I wasn't bothered by her height, in fact, it gave her the most amazing pair of legs I've ever seen. The only time it felt wierd was if she stood right behind me.

Personally I have a HUGE preference for shorter women (around the 5' bracket) but have dated women only as tall as me and no taller (5'8). As scary as it sound apparently this all goes back to looking to find someone like your mother if you are a guy from when you were 1-2 years old, or someone like ur father if you're female. Apparently we all subconciuosly look for the same characteristics that we've seen in them and i'd agree with that!.. but yes.. it's all about short women

Alot of the girls I talk to do seems to like taller guys. Being a 5'8" guy myself, this doesn't help me out alot. A girl I know was laughing at an old friend of hers because her friend was getting married to a shorter guy. I don't understand it either. That's why I play guitar. Doesn't matter how short you are, girls dig musicians!

in about 5'11 or maybe 6' with my shoes on, and I like shorter women, like the 5'1-5'6 bracket... but i have nothing against 5'10 women or anything like that, i like to have the woman a little shorter than me and for some reason I'm attracted to shorter women, but any women as tall- or shorter is fine with me

Honestly height doesn't matter. My husband is 6'5 and I'm almost 5'5. I'll tell you a foot size difference is awesome for spooning, but other then that no big difference.

I've dated men of all heights, it really just matters whether they were an asshole or not.

I'm a tad under 6 foot(seriously I'm like 5' 11" and 3/4s so how would you like that hanging over your head that you can never honestly say you are a 6 footer) and while I admire a tall woman I will admire her from afar. I have a major hangup about being the same height or shorter than a potential mate. I think it stems back to the fact that my dad is like 5'8" and my mom is like 5'7" and when she wears heels she looks down on him and she used to always make jokes about him when he wasn't around.

Besides I like the shorter female because you can pick them up and spin them around and what not and as a consequence I would say the average height of my girlfriends would be right at 5'2-5'3". Not quite a foot in difference(contemplated dating a girl that was 4'11" even but looking back that might have just been a little too petite)
Not so easy to do with someone the same height as you or taller. So I think there is something behind a lot of shorter women wanting a bigger guy to be with as it just might make them feel more "secure" and it might even be more practical(i.e. reaching for things up high etc...).
I would like to see some numbers though of how many tall tall women like 5'9" and above date men significantly shorter than they are.

Well, it seems no one responding is actually addressing your question because the situation isn't even applicable. Being 5'7" and white is a little awkward, but there's not much one can do about genetics. And there is no denying the ethnicity aspect, because there are different average heights which dictate different norms.

As to why women seem to prefer taller men (yes, just look at the Fark Personals), I would guess it is an implicit biological preference as others have implied. Even for the shorter women, I think there is still the desire to seek out a partner of "average height", regardless of the disparity. It is also more advantageous to be above the average than below it. On the male side of the coin, when the female is taller, there seems to be a sense of emasculation which only compounds the existing problem.

Nonetheless, it is important to not carry a chip on one's shoulder because of a perceived genetic short-changing. It is unfortunate that, like size, height matters to a certain degree. Find solace in always having enough leg room.

Studies have shown conclusively that when babys are held and touched mroe often, it promotes growth. Unfortunatally, all the holding in the world can't keep up with genetics.

I'm only 5'2" on a good day and my boyfriend is 6'0". I have always been attracted to guys who are a lot taller than me. I'm not really sure why. But then again most guys are a lot taller than me. I think 5'7 would be fine.

Years back, in another life, when I was a store manager for a woman's clothing store, I had inherited an employee who had been with the store since the beginning of time. She must have been in her late 60s early 70s -- from Brooklyn originally, and had no censor on her mouth at all...

Well, my boss was in one day, who was all of 5'5" and quite insecure about being around tall women, well, Rita comes up to him one day (Rita was 6 feet tall and very very solid) and says - Hey, Jack, is it true that short men are hung?

(I don't think I could talk for a good 20 minutes from being convulsed with laughter - he just had to leave the office and I didn't see him the rest of the day... So -- gotta know -- is it true?)
