God - His purpose for us?
If you "truly" believe in God, then I think that it should change the way you live your life.
One of the first things we should do is find out as much as we can about God, what He wants with us, what He expects of us, why He created us, etc. If God exists, then that means He created us. If He created us, He must have had a reason for doing so...we have a purpose and life has meaning. What is that purpose? |

Well, let's rephrase the queastion a bit. How about, What does ever parent want from their children? Simple. To grow up like them, only better. It says in the bible that we are made in God's image, yet saying that he walks around on two legs and is squishy is kind of silly. We are gods in the making. Just still hanging around in the embrio phase. Thou art God, as VMS would say (some of you get it, some of you don't), so, what purpose do you want? That should be all you need to ask.

You know I've known 2 people that have truely lived there lives in the way "Christians" are supposed to. They were the kindest, most help, least judgmental people I've ever known in my life. One was an athiest in the extream, and the other a card carrying member of the Church of Satan. I myself get along with God just great, I hate his fucking fan club but the man Himself is ok, but you don't need God to live a good life.

When I try to conceptualize God, I think of Him as all possibilities in potentia. Following from that, if any purpose for creating the universe can be ascribed to God, it is that He wants that potential to unfold and every possibility to be realized. Organic life is a particularly useful channel for effecting that purpose because of the way in which more complex entities evolve through the dissolution and recombination of simpler ones.

I do not believe in an entity- a singular type of being named God. I do believe there are energies out there, indefinable, unknowable and beyond our understanding. We call those energies by various god-names according to the beliefs already in our hearts. 9ever notice the word belief has a 'lie' in the middle?)
That said- I do not believe there is one concrete purpose. I think each human being has a different path to follow and learn from. Some are here for growth on a positive level and some are here to learn some negative lesson. Some are here to teach and others to learn. Everyone has thier own purpose and the free will to follow that purpose or not.

Today, I saw a cut-worm crawling on a stone in my garden. I stepped on it, killing it fairly instantly. I started thinking about what I had just done, and that, if there is a God, how many different and painful ways that entity has created for us to die. Wouldn't it a horrible thought if God's actual purpose, and amusment is to watch us die in many various ways, some extremely painful?

For example, what if this little game is a metaphor for how God really entertains him/herself?

Let's start with what Jesus said...in the Lord's prayer:
"Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven..." What is God's "will"? Apparently this "will" has already been accomplished in heaven, and we're still waiting/asking for it to be accomplished on earth. Personally, I get the impression that God has a purpose for the earth. |

If we're looking at this from Christian point of view the ultimate point is to do God's will.
On a basic level this means do what God commands. In the Old Testament, if God said "go to this city and preach" you went to that city and preached or got eaten by a whale. In the New Testament Jesus tells us not to do a whole bunch of stuff (fornicate, divorce, change money in the temple etc.) But what's the larger point of this? I think it's to make us love each other, much as God loves us. Indeed, Jesus says the greatest commandment is to "love your neighbor as yourself." The lesser commandments are all about creating a situation where this love can happen, by helping to create a just society. But ultimately the point is for people to treat everyone's needs and wants on par with their own. This also fulfills our destiny of being made in God's image, since God's overwhelming characteristic is loving his creation. Haven't organized my thoughts to post in here for awhile so please excuse my rambling. |

Some of these posts are clearly from the Christian perspective of God, and that's fine for their beliefs.
I, however, prefer to know and don't like to believe. I do believe in a God for the simple reason that I exist and something created the Universe I am in. Whether it was quantum physics or some guy in a garage or some ultra-dimensional entity is pointless for me to hypothesize because the simple fact is, there are too many possibilities for me to feel safe guessing which one God is. Therefore, I think my purpose is to live life based on the morals that society has defined. And when these morals conflict with some of my own stronger beliefs, I choose the latter (this saves me from the inevitable Nazi discussion). When I live this way I live happily. Now, if only I could figure out how to live this way all the time... Or, taking a line from the video game Alpha Centauri (which is excellent), maybe "the purpose of life is life itself." |

I'm not sure we can ever know if god has a purpose for us. If we can't be sure of the answer to "Is there a god?" how can we answer the other question? If there is a god I really doubt we would ever be able to tell his reasoning.
