The meaning of sex
What exactly does sex mean to our culture?
The function of sex is to propagate the species. Plain and simple. Nature has provided us with the incentive of a good feeling for accomplishing this (can you imagine how long the human race would exist if sex felt bad?) We have sex for the purpose of making babies, but it has become much more than that. The high felt during intercourse can be addictive, many participants simply can not get enough. Because of this addiction society has built a temple around the very act itself. We use it to sell everything from beer to cars. We dramatize it with T.V. shows and movies. We use it or the lack of it to justify our religious beliefs or condemn them. It weaves itself into the very fabric of our existance. Without this good feeling (orgasm) would it mean as much to us as it does now? Would we still exist as a society if there were no orgasms? So the question becomes this. Is it's true meaning pleasure? Or is it propagation? |

Sex is about the oddest thing ever. When you stop and think about it. Don't believe me? Get decently high and THEN think about it. You will never think about it the same way again. I am serious. As far as the meaning of sex. Does it really matter? Is it possible it serves several functions? Or maybe we just make to much of it these days. I think that last statement is the must true EXCEPT that it isn't a recent thing.

We'd still exist as a society, we'd just be very different. I can see the argument made that we wouldn't have needed to grow bigger brains if competition for mates hadn't figured in.
Anyway, the "true meaning" is propagation of the species. We were born to fuck and figure out how we could fuck some more, in the vaguely technical sense. Sex is funny, though, and not exactly ha-ha funny. But why contemplate when we could be out inseminating?

"Sex is a joke in Heaven?
-"The way i understand it, its mostly a joke down here." Thank you, Dogma. I think it depends a great deal on what we think of it...but i've seen a pretty convincing case made that its particularly intense for humans becuase it needs to keep pairs together to raise our ridiculously fragile and needy babies. |

Sex started in our species, as in all others, as stricly a matter of procreation but has evolved into so much more than that.
While the old caveman instincts are not as prevelant now, it is still our burning instinct....to survive....and to survive you must have young. In my heart...sex is the ultimate joining with someone. The way to give them everything inside of you, heart..body...and soul. Of course you run into your one-night-stands and whatnot. But I think sex means so much more to us than just producing babies....after all, if that were the case then there wouldn't be the number of abortions there are and there wouldn't be that much use for birth control. Sex is pleasurable...plain and simple. It can be purely driven by the body or it can also be driven by the heart. I prefer the heart aspect myself!

I believe that sex is something that you do to prove to your partner how much you love them, want to be with them, and care about them. It shows that you enjoy giving them pleasure, and long to share that intimacy. (*and it feels good too*)

True, sex is for procreation, but it's come to mean a lot more these days. We are judged on it as a skill, not just a method for procreation. Women complain about men and men complain about women in regards to their innability to perform sexually in the sack. This isn't a matter of simple procreation. We've gone to great lengths as a society to take the procreation out of sexual activity.
If sex didn't feel so good, we wouldn't be extict. There are only 2 species that have sex for pleasure, humans and dolphins. Every other speicies just does it as a matter of course. We would be driven to have sex as we are driven to eat, to sleep. There must be some kind of drive for us to procreate it just happens that pleasure is how is works for us. The pleasure sensations in sex are mother natures tool to get us to procreate. Sex means a lot of things, but I'm not sure if love is, or even can be, one of them. For all we know there would be no need for love without the drive for sex. In animals sex means procreation. But for man, sex is so much more, a blessing and a curse. |

Love can exist in sex. When my girl and I come home from college after not seeing each other for months, and we go out to eat, come back to melt in each others arms and have sex it's for pleasure, it's for the feeling.. and then it's for the love and respect we hold on each other. Love is a large part of sex for some people.. for others it's just feeling. Sex is what you make of it.

Feeling good is our motivation. Eating feels good, so we do it. Sex feels good so we do it. If they didnt feel good, then we wouldnt do them.
