We'd still exist as a society, we'd just be very different. I can see the argument made that we wouldn't have needed to grow bigger brains if competition for mates hadn't figured in.
Anyway, the "true meaning" is propagation of the species. We were born to fuck and figure out how we could fuck some more, in the vaguely technical sense.
Sex is funny, though, and not exactly ha-ha funny. But why contemplate when we could be out inseminating?
