pinging
I've got a 1965 plymouth valiant i just put a new short block in and got it running but it doesn't idle smooth on the stock timing so i moved it till it sounded good and smooth the head is about two years old so i know the parts there are pretty good but when i climb hills it is pinging my dad says its nothing to worry about but i don't always trust him id like some mo opinions on the matter.

Dont let it ping. Go into a lower gear when climbing hills or buy higher grade gas. Pinging is BAD for the engine. i remember hearing how in more extreme cases it can totally destroy your pistons. something like destroying the top, messing up that layer on top of it ... barrier layer or someting... and the heat can actually get to the piston then and start to melt/burn holes in it...
either way, if its pinging a lot it IS something to worry about a little...

Agreed, pinging is very bad. Take a timing light and play with your carbs after it is timed. Detonation does Very Bad Things to your engine's innards. You might also consider moving to a hgiher octane rated gasoline if you cannot correct it by properly timing it ad adjusting your carbs.

Ditto on the higher octane. Pinging is also known as premature detonation. The gas is igniting before it should. You can destroy an engine that way. Higher octane fuels are harder to ignite, and thus should not ignite before the spark is discharged.
Modern day cars usually have knock sensors installed that will adjust the timing to minimize pinging, allowing owners to use lower octane fuels. |

A inline 6 dosen't require high octane........ whats wrong is the timing is advanced to far, at idle it sound and run fine...... even while putting down the road it will seem fine, but when under a load like excellerating, punching the gas or going uphill it will ping because the vacuum advance is advancing the timing beyond specs......

"A inline 6 dosen't require high octane........ "
Thats a pretty vague and inaccurate generalization. I've got an I6 i love, and timing is correct. Both vaccuum advance and mechanical advance are working properly and to specs, yet i still ping more than i would like and sometimes need to go upto 89 octane. A non high-performance i6 shouldn't require high octance in stock and perfect workin order. Any engine with any sort of wear on it or a highperformance engine may require higher octance fuel to reduce pinging if it occurs too much.

Peryn is correct. You didn't say much about your build (actually you didnt say you had a slant6 but apparently it only has one head) but I had better than 250 out of the 225 in my Aspen and it required premium gas. Hard on transmissions until I found a 6/727 out of a truck.
