Ditto on the higher octane. Pinging is also known as premature detonation. The gas is igniting before it should. You can destroy an engine that way. Higher octane fuels are harder to ignite, and thus should not ignite before the spark is discharged.
Modern day cars usually have knock sensors installed that will adjust the timing to minimize pinging, allowing owners to use lower octane fuels.
