Soy milk
Since I was just thinking about soy from BocaBurgers.. I was also wondering about Soy milk. Does anyone drink this stuff? I tried one sip of it a long time ago and hated it, but I was thinking about giving it another try. Anyone have any brand/flavor recommendations?

I dunno anything about soy milk, but since regular milk recently started giving me problems, I started looking for an alternative. I started drinking Dairy Ease... it tastes enough like milk to satisfy me, the price is around the same as regular milk, and it's lactose free...
Try it sometime...I was suprised. |

Well, I've gotta go to Wal Mart some time this weekend because I'm running low on bottled water (the campus tap water here is NASTY) so I'll check out what they've got. One company has some single serving bottles of soymilk, I'll have to buy one and give it a try. If it's good, I'll buy a quart, if it's bad, I won't waste too much on it

One thing that I wish I liked, yet dont, is milk. I have yet to try soy milk just because when I see it for sale on a shelf, warm, and in a box, the idea of ingesting it makes me ill. Looking forward to see what people think of it....maybe i'll give it a shot.

I don't think soy milk is a replacement for milk. Soy milk is made from a bean and tastes completely different and it has a completely different nutritional niche.
I personally like regular soy "drink", as I call it. Just the bean extracts, water and sugar. |

If you drink soy milk make SURE it has sugar in it, other wise...good lord it'd be the most foul tasting drink you'd ever had the [dis] pleasure to drink.
Also, just as a knowledge bit, if you make your own soy milk or someone offers homemade soy milk, make SURE it's boiled and boiled and boiled thoroughly. If it's not just got something that'll make you sick. Some people are ok but when i had undone soymilk once the better hald of my evening was spent throwing up and feeling like death. Otherwise it's quite good though .

The only type of Soy milk that I have liked was Vanilla and only by So Good. I've tried other Vanilla flavours from other companies, but they were gag worthy.
EDIT: Found the correct name of the company.

Do you know where they sell that at? I know Wal Mart has the brand Silk, but I don't remember if they have anything else. We've also good Food Lion & Krogers around here in this small town.
Hmm, maybe "original" flavor soymilk would be good to mix with protein shakes? |

I had soy milk a while back as well and didn't like it. I just stick to hi-lo or occasionally skim, but it is a bit watery.
I imagine some of the flavoured soy milks taste a lot better though, although unfortuantly i foiund you can't "mask" the taste of soy in coffee or cereal. So i don't know how good they'd be in your preotein shakes? It taste bad, for me though As for bottled water, can't you filter or boil it yourself and then cool it back down to drink? You'd probably save a lot of money, or you could just have it with herbal tea or something.... |

Soy milk isn't the greatest, but i guess for my money it beats milk any day. I think the practice of drinking cow milk is pretty freaking weird. Milk also isn't really as good for you as the National Dairy Council would have you believe.
Don't get me wrong, i loves me some cheese and put cream in my coffee, cause soy creamer makes me farty, but milk is pretty overrated. In fact, the next time you gulp down a nice cold glass of milky goodness, try not to think of the mucus you're ingesting. |

I drink it everyday in my coffee or tea, and with protein drinks. I drink it instead of milk; because you don't really want to be in the room with me after I have much milk; cheese and yogurt are okay, though.
Not everybody likes soy milkbut you get used to it, and regular milk tastes odd to me now. I also like chocolate soymilk; it does make a good mix with protein powder. Like somebody else said, always get sweetened soymilk; unsweetened tastes like chalk. (Actually, soymilk is always going to be sweetened unless it specifically says "unsweetened"). Also, "enriched" soymilk means that they've added calcium, vitamin D, and other things that people expect in milk. So you might want to go for that, though you don't have to. There are about a zillion brands. Silk is the brand you find in supermarkets that aren't really into alternative foods -- guess it must be made/distributed by someone major. Vitasoy, Pacific Soy, Wildwood are all good brands. Note that not all soy milk is kept in the dairy case; Silk and Wildwood are, but a lot of other brands come in a vac/sealed box that doesn't need refrigeration. So you may have to look elsewhere in the store for it, maybe over by the bottled water or nonrefrigerated soft drinks. The good thing about the nonrefrigerated boxes is that you can keep them in your dorm room even if you don't have a fridge. Bad thing is, you have to refrigerate them after you open them. So find a fridge, or chug fast. If you can get small-sized boxes -- they come in six-packs-- that would be ideal. Last edited by Rodney; 09-04-2003 at 05:30 PM.. |

I think the salient points have been made.
* Soy milk kicks ass cause you can store it. We buy it by the case and store it in the pantry. * Soy milk is usually flavored and sweetened. Choose a brand with the degree of sugar and a specific flavor you like. * Enriched soy milk has generally the same nutritional content as cow's milk.

I went on a Soy Milk binge the last two weeks and tried
Pacific, Vitasoy, Edensoy, Westsoy (reg and plus) and the Trader Joe;s brand. I tried (when available the vanilla and unsweetened types of the above). None are alike and some like Edensoy leave big coagulated chunks of soy stuff at the bottom of the cup. (i.e. some are really filtered and some aren't too filtered leaving a chalky taste). Westsoy (PLUS) add Calcium Triphosphate and taste really chalky. I really favor Vitasoy and Westsoy (not Plus, the regular stuff). All above are organic, but not sure if the Vitasoy is or isn't. The worst of the lot was the Trader Joe's brand. Just didn't taste right. I personally don't mind if it's sweetened, vanilla flavored or unsweetened. But most people would probably dislike the unsweetened. Boy, this post is all over the place. |

Soymilk, now there's something I know about.
I'm lactose intolerant, along with half of my family. We all have our own personal favs when it comes to soymilk. My sis and her toddlers go for 8th continent. It's pretty new, not available in all states, but considering that I just started seeing it in Utah (the only state that's still stuck in the 80's) I'm sure it's available everywhere. 8th Continent is a bit sweet for my tastes. Even their original flavor seems to have a twinge of vanilla to it. I'm a fan of good ol' Soy Silk. I go for the original organic sort (red box), though I recommend the vanilla for anyone who doesn't like the earthy taste original has to offer. Hope this is handy info to someone! |

When I was in grade school my mom would pack little 'juice box' sized cartons of Vitasoy sweetened soymilk with my lunch. Those are good... you can find them at Asian markets. I don't usually drink unsweetened soymilk. I use it with cereal and in cooking, though. |

I'm not a huge soymilk fan. I won't drink the plain stuff straight, but I will cook with it. Some vanillas and chocolates (yum!) are good. Chocolate, I can drink straight. Vanilla, I like to use in cereal. Plain and vanilla work well in chai, cocoa, etc. For those who really can't deal with straight soymilk, Eden makes EdenBlend which is a mix of soymilk and rice milk - it really knocks out the odd soy flavour.

Have used soy milk in the past. In a shake or with cereal it is ok[never really liked just drinking a glass of it]...sometimes bothers my stomach, so I use Rice Milk or Oat milk more now...
