push-ups.
I find push-ups to be a great part of my weekly workout. If i dont get to go to the gym, i try to a couple of sets of these a day. Everyone seems to be into the weights, but push-ups are great. They arn't the most glamourous of exercises though. Does anyone else still do these? Or have any reasons why we shouldnt?

Push ups are the best and safest IMHO. I do push ups constantly, people think I'm weird.

Gotta admit, I'm more a natural technique guy.
I do push ups (one handed, hands together, hands wide apart...), sit ups, (alternating sides, until I can't stand up straight!), squats and alot of stretching exercises. I also do 'handstand' push ups, against a wall. I'm more of an endurance/agility/flexibility/stamina person than a brute raw strength guy, and I think that the more natural approaches are more suited to this. ps i find that listening to the Soul Calibur (dreamcast version) soundtrack give me abilities that i can't normally draw upon...dunno why, but I do more and harder exercise while listening to it...

Try the reverse push up sometime. Get on your back, heels together on the floor and push up with your triceps (like the name says, a reverse pushup ).

I do 'em, but I get a bit annoyed by the way my right elbow "clicks" during each cycle depending on the exact angle/position that arm is in.

still do push up sets every other day. I alternate with pull ups... used to do them the old fashioned way but about six months ago I bought a rock climbers training board (about $30.00) and that gives me alot of grip variety

I usually do those push-ups that I can never remember what they're called.
You do them on your finger tips. You start with your butt kind of high in the air, then do a swooping motion downward, your crotch almost touching the ground and your chest our and perpendicular to the ground. I would do plain push-ups if my wrists weren't strained most of the time as they are

Doing 200 pushups a day really isn't going to do much to help you gain muscle over time. Muscles grow through overload, and everything I've read indicates high rep exercices are just going to bring about lots of lactic acid, which will be coutner-active to any gains. If you're gonna do pushups, try weighted ones, with a backpack on or something, for low reps.
Don't get me wrong, I think they're a great compliment to any exercise routine, but working out the same muscle group every day with loads of reps at a light weight is not, for most people, the most efficient way to get results. |

A guy I know taught me this push-up that he learned while he was in a state penitentiary.
Squat down with your ankles touching each other (your feet side-by-side). Now you measure four hand-lengths out from your feet. To do this, you put your palm on the ground with the wrist end of your hand touching the top of your toes. Take your second and put it in front of your other hand, touching. Now at four hand-lengths away from your feet, put your hands side-by-side on the floor palms down with your index fingers touching and your thumbs touching, forming a a diamond or triangle shape. Straighten out your legs. You don't have to lock your knees, but don't let them bend as you do this exercise. Lower your body until your nose is in the triangle/diamond that your hands are making and push-up! If you are a weakling like me, you can start a few more handlengths out, but you want to eventually do the exercise at the four hand-length distance.

Wow, I am just not flexible enough to pull that one off easily, but what a stretch in the hamstrings! I incorporate push-ups at the end of my chest workout. Its a great way to get just a little more burn out of a good workout. Also, push-ups are a great for when a gym is just not around. For those who are too uncomfortable to go to a gym, I recommed starting out doing 3 or 4 sets of push-ups everyday, you'd be surprised how much of a difference they can make.

No idea, its presense or lack thereof depends on the exact angle it's at. Twist my arm just a little and it goes away.
