Problem with AOL..HELP!!!

Hey all,
My ex and i shared an AOL account and I was the master account and it was under my name.
Well, now I don't live with him anymore and he didn't cancel the AOL membership, but he stopped paying recently and I keep on getting a letter from AOL (with my new address!!!??? Hmm..I never gave it to them) stating that my account is overdue and that they will report me to the credit bureau. I called them twice and they insisted that i am not the account holder and that they cannot release any information, since I'm not the account holder andto disregard the letter. Well, a third and fourth letter came and what do you know??? My credit score has gone down!!! I'm so upset and do not know what to do.
Any idea on how to resolve this porblem? My ex is impossible to deal with and he might of done it on purpose, so what should I do now?
Thx for any suggestions.

Well my first suggestion is a little late, but here it is... AVOID AOL. If you see AOL run in the opposite direction, and don't look back. They are notorious for bad service, even worse technical support, they don't listen to customers, and their internet service is crappy at best. They're clever, in the worst way.

Example

As for your problem, that's tough. With AOL it's hard enough to shut-off your service even when you are the owner. Just try calling him. If he keeps ignoring you, or avoiding the issue, just drop a hint that your lawyer will get involved.

Goodluck.

If you did not sign anything, you are not legally responsible. They are just playing hardball and either a) want there money from someone, and since you are responding they will take it from you b) playing those AOL games that they love to play and keeping the account from closing.

I once had a AOL account many many years ago, and it took me almost 20 minutes to close it. They play dirty so have to get nasty and don't take any shit from them.

Initially you had the master account, and you had your credit card on file and were being billed for it right?

When you seperated he changed payment options but not the master address or anything like that, just the credit card information.

IMO you are responsible for it because your name originally appeared and agreed to the of the Terms of Service. While you changed payment options, you didn't change the terms of service revoking your responsibility from it.

You need to contact them. They can see who logged on (which accounts) and from what contact numbers and IP addresses if it is bring your own service. You may be able to get them to change this, but more than likely not.

It's going to be a pain and you may have to actually pay it off yourself.

IMO it's your fault for not changing everything. If you have ANY joint accounts left over that you just "handed" to him, it's high time you severed all economic and contractual responsibilities properly. If you don't this is just an example of how while you think you "did the right thing," it can come back to bite you in the ass.

im confused.I am on aol.But you say you had the master account, registered at your old address..now you have moved and youre getting the bills...the part I am not understanding is them saying that you are not responsibile...IMO you are if you are the master accnt holder.you can have several accnts on aol,but only one 'Master' screen name...
did he always pay the bill when you lived together?does he stil have aol?most credit agreemmnets and accnts arenone-transferable.I would establish whether it was in my name, and whether I am liable..by speakin to aol,or if necessary, writing to them..this sometimes works better. Then I would pay up,and if i stil wanted the aol to get it transferred to my new address.
if it is a joint account ....this also needs to be established properly, then both you and him are equally liable.Aol will get on at both of you to pay, and do not care who pays,as long as it gets paid.in this case if it was me i would pay it to get me out of the red!

Thanks all.
Cynthetiq and Festered: I cannot pay it since they tell me that I am not the account holderand refuse to even tell me anything about theaccount. They truly think that I am trying to take my ex's info from his account. I guess my ex changed it to his name since my name is not in the account, according to AOL. I think he still has the AOL service nad it used to be deducted from his credit card, which was under my name until recently. The part I don't understand either is how did they get my new address and why are they asking for the bill if i cannot access my account or pay it or do anything else?

I canceled an account with them and recorded the conversation after hearing the Vincent Ferrari tape.

Mine wasn't as bad as his, but you're right--it takes about 20 minutes.

Any creditors are able to do searches via services that will have your current information.

As far as the fact that you allowed the credit card to be in your name, makes you even more liable than the TOS agreement. You also have the credit card agreement that you agree to pay anything that is charged to that account. Since your ex-decided to no longer pay since he's not responsible for the account, he's left you holding the bag since you are responsible since it was in your name.

While the credit card had his name on it, your name was the primary so you are liable.

Again, if you haven't done so, take the time now to sever all financial ties and joint accounts you have left. This includes things like Blockbuster video, gym membership, etc.

AOL is the worst. They will do anything to keep you from dropping their service.
