I think he still has the AOL service nad it used to be deducted from his credit card, which was under my name until recently. The part I don't understand either is how did they get my new address and why are they asking for the bill if i cannot access my account or pay it or do anything else?

Any creditors are able to do searches via services that will have your current information.
As far as the fact that you allowed the credit card to be in your name, makes you even more liable than the TOS agreement. You also have the credit card agreement that you agree to pay anything that is charged to that account. Since your ex-decided to no longer pay since he's not responsible for the account, he's left you holding the bag since you are responsible since it was in your name.
While the credit card had his name on it, your name was the primary so you are liable.
Again, if you haven't done so, take the time now to sever all financial ties and joint accounts you have left. This includes things like Blockbuster video, gym membership, etc.
