Videogame Pet Peeves

There are certain things you see over and over in various games that irk you every time they pop up. Well, here's the thread where you can complain about them and share your pain. I'll start....

I hate console games where, when turning on the console, the cursor defaults to 'Begin a New Game' when 95% of the time you'll be continuing from a saved game.

I also hate games that have battles you have to lose. I always end up reloading over and over again trying to find out of there is some way i can manage to win the battle. If they really meant for me to lose, it would've been a cut-scene, right?

I hate it when I feel like the comp is cheating. Its a computer, why would it cheat right? Well, it happens mostly in fighting games (virtua fighter in the arcades). Youre like doing a perfect round, you only need your weakest of punch to connect to win the round and then suddenly the computer wakes up and you just can't land a hit and completely destroys you. Hate when that happens.

I hate games (mostly RPGs) when you can "screw your game" because you missed something earlier on. Like something you can never get back. An upgrade, an item, anything. I always feel like I have to do the whole game over again just to get that one thing or it wont feel complete. Its just an obsession. Sometimes, it completely ruins the game for me. Like I was playing Dark Cloud 2, which is a wonderful game, and I forgot to take the picture of a boss. That was haunting me for the rest of the game.

I also hate games where they have you "try" different stuff. Like in some games, you can cook or craft and then they dont give you any direction, they just tell you to try different things. Hate that. I don't hate time to lose with that shit.

#1 - Bullshit cheating cheap enemies. There is a difference between a hard enemy, and one that is blatently abusing the rules that you are forced to follow.

#2 - BAD CAMERA ANGLES!!!!!!

#3 - Listen, its my choice to save often, so LET ME FFS.

and lastly, #4 - Overly vague puzzles such as myst. Hey I dont mind a good challenge, but christ allready.. give us somthing better to work off of rather reading for 40 minutes to get a few clues, that still you have to figure out the majority of ig BY GUESSING.

Some pet peeves of mine

1. Wasted gaming environments. This is common in most games nowadays. You can walk around but you are very limited with what you can interact with.

2. Fixed camera angles. I can't stand them.

3. No car damage in most driving games. When you ram into a car or rail you're not supposed to bounce off.

4. Lack or orignality. Cliche stories and characters.

5. Diablo clones. I'm sick of them. Make some real rpgs.

1) Vents - It should've ended with Half-Life. You can't possibly expect me to believe that there are half-man-sized ventilation shafts placed ever so conveniently.

2) Enemies with supersenses - Crawling behind the enemy, slowly, quietly, carefully, only to have him turn around and frag me in the face.

It always annoys me when I can't crouch or jump in games where I feel I should be able to. For example take Manhunt. It's a stealth game yet you cannot crouch behind stuff to hide from enemies.

Games with backtracking and/or no clear indication on where to go in large levels. Sometimes backtracking can be done well but most of the time it's just annoying.

Really bad voiceacting. The first game that comes to mind is Dynasty Warriors 3. If you've played it, you know what I mean. "Feel the power of my....MAGIC!"

Saving right before you die or quicksaving when you meant to quickload. Not the game's fault obviously but annoying when it happens.

RPG related

1. Killing a person in a silent fashion and the whole town aggro's on me (morrowind did this right)

2. BAD NPC AI, give me the ability to pause the game and issue commands from 3rd person omniscent (BG2/KOTOR did this right).

3. Not letting me roll a character at the start of the game (Diablo comes to mind).

4. Not letting me kill everyone I come across. If I kill a vital NPC tell me ! (Morrowing did this very well).

5. Not listing damage/hit formulas for weapons and skills, if I want to Min/Max on my 7th play through let me.

6. Long load times, plague of RPGs

7. Following an amazing game with a trash sequal (Yes, you Deus Ex 2 and Neverwinter Nights's official campaign ).

8. Giving me money often and shops rarely (Deus Ex)

9. Being too linear (Console RPGs)

10. RPGs so open-ended they feel like an MMORPG that only has one player (Morrowind and to some extent Arcanum).

11. The inability to skip cut scenes (I don't want to see the scene on my fourth play through).

12. The inability to turn off music to save processing power, for say streaming audio (no, editing the .ini does not count).

13. Having skills that become worthless towards the end of the game (Unarmed in Fallout 1/2 comes to mind).

14. The D&D 3rd edition rules for character creation. I hold a special hatred in my heart for the "buying" stats system.

15. General buggyness, not cool when a crash/save corrupt can erase a good bit of game time.

16. Games that don't autosave every new area or every 15 minutes.

17. Forcing me to get past problem X in only way, I want several answers or multiple team mates (Deus Ex and Fallout get extra points here).

18. Making the "good path" three times as long as the "evil" path (Fallout you're guilty, you too KOTOR, same boat BGII, Arcanum, I remember you having the same problem)

19. Giving me way more money that I could possibly spend. Please add something like a super-item shop towards the end of the game.

20. Time limits on game play, realistic yes, fun no.

I hate not being able to kill all the enemies in a level, i.e. I detest enemies that spawn around me when I think I've blown everything to bits.

Also, crappy game music... there's no excuse for it. That and when games don't use the standard menu button commands (like O instead of X in Metal Gear Solid). It drives me nuts when I'm trying to save and I end up doing something completely different...

1. Cheating AI. I know it's the purpose of the game to challenge you, but there are times when it's incredibly f'n ridiculous. Lately, GTA:VC has been pissing me off. I can handle a car in that game like nobody's bidness, but the second I'm in a mission or go into vigilante, it's as if I can't drive it.. like the rules of the physics engine change. The car suddenly handles like ass, or someone will shoot my car TWICE and it blows up. WTF?

2. Linear RPGs. Final Fantasy X pissed me off with that shit.. and as a result, I never cared enough about the game to finish it. Where's the world map? The airship? The freedom of being able to go whereever I want? If Final Fantasy 12 is this linear, then I've lost all hope for the series.

3. The Mini games/events in RPGs that you CAN'T re-do if you screw up. An example being... the lightning plains in FFX. You need to hit X whenever the screen lights up to avoid getting hit by the lightning. If you make it to the end, you get a prize depending on how many times you got hit. I'd love to get the best item they have, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna start a new game JUST to get past the lightning plains again.

4. Not being able to go back in an RPG (as mentioned by another poster above). Final Fantasy 8 pissed me off with that. Once you get into time compression, you can't get back to the real world. Thanks, now I need to start over considering I went in with crappy weapons and none of my guys built up.

5. Cryptic hidden stuff that you could NEVER find on your own without the help of a strategy guide. Example being... the DoomTrain (I think that's what it's called) GF in FF8. I don't even remember how to get it (it's been about 4 years since I played), but a friend of mine looked up all the GFs since he was missing one. Found out that you get some rather nonsensical clue at some point in the game, and then you have to go to some secluded spot and use an item. C'mon.. do they really expect people to figure this stuff out on their own?

I love to complete my games 100%, but half the time it's damn near impossible because they make things so tedious and complex.

I beat Metroid Prime w/ an 89% rating. I was at the Metroid Prime (end boss) and was missing the Ice Cannon, so I scoured every single square inch of that game. I'm talking I scanned every wall with every visor on every level MULTIPLE times... took me an ungodly amount of hours. I eventually found the Ice Beam. I thought it would bump me up to the upper 90's, but no. Went up 1%. I'm assuming the rest are missles/power bomb expansions and stuff, but goddamn... to know that I scoured every square inch of that game multiple times only to learn that there's 10% more I need to get a 100% complete rating is INSANE and somewhat disappointing.

I don't mind playing a game to completion, but I'm not gonna devote the next 4 months of my life trying to find all this extra stuff just to see a better ending...

Couldn't you go back to the lightning plains to try the lightning mini-game over and over? I think you had to dodge 200 lightning blasts to get Lulu's item and after several tries, I managed to get up to 167 then got hit by lightning. I almost threw the controller though the TV.

Come to think of it, getting the ultimate weapons for most of the chracters was a huge pain in the ass, especially Tidus'. Finish the chocobo race in 0 seconds or less, sure no problem buddy!

not being able to climb things that a normal human being could climb, just tall enough to not be able to jump on, but heaven forbid I be able to climb on top of a desk. And since when did a chain link fence become an unpassable monument? if you want an area to become unpassable build a giant stone fence and cover it with teflon and crisco. If I can't climb it, I REALLY don't want to be able to climb it.

I'll say it again, cheating AI, enemies that are WAY too far away to hit you with a gun accurately, yet have 100% accuracy at a mile away.

I'll also agree with vents to a degree, if they go to a secret area or someplace that you don't need to go to complete the mission, cool. Also TOO realistic A/C systems, Just like in real life i can crawl around the vents for an hour and still not get any where. I swear one of these days I'm gonna come across a player that had tried to beat the level before, only now he rotting in some vent stinking up the whole place.

Little crawly things that damage you as much as a shotgun blast, I don't think a cat knawing on my ankle is going to take away 20% of my health. Unless it has STD's or something.

I can't agree more with what was said about some small thing you did at the beginning of the game. having a major consequence on the ending, or if it affects the ability to complete the game at all. You saved a person at the beginning of the game and you rely on him being alive, only to find out he died of indigestion because you didn't give him some TUMS in level 2.

Unrealistic hit zones. I know these are game intensive and is just starting to get to be a big aspect in a game. but if I shoot a guy with a .44 in the head. I better be blowing brain bubbles out of my nose, and picking skull shards out of my eyes. If they recieve a headshot only to turn around and start shooting back, no bueno.

Games that are TOO realistic. yes I like a lot of realism in my games, and this isn't as bad as being too unrealistic. it's all a balance. When my character wakes up in the morning I don't want him in the bathroom for 45 minutes trying to drop the chalupa he ate the night before.

Unbreakable things. since when did everyone install bulletproof glass? If i take a chainsaw to a book shelf I want it to shatter. If there is a padlock on a door where I need a key to continue on with the level, in real life i would use a gun or any other heavy object to break that fucker apart and continue on.

Beginnning of the game cutscenes. ROAR. when i sit down to a game i just bought/rented, i don't wanna wait 45 minutes to actually play the damn thing. This is why the Secret of Mana was the last RPG game i enjoyed. 5 minutes of story at the front, and then its all player. None of this "for the next 45 minutes i tap x and move a bit, then the fun part starts"

I hate enemies in RPGs that have a final, dying attack. When I'm hacking away at a boss, into the groove of his attack pattern, and I finally take him down, I don't want him to let loose his 'ultra-super-death move' that takes out some of my party, or knocks them to very low health.

Another pet peeve I have is locked doors in Survival Horror games. This isn't one that irks me, but it does get to me because it makes absolutely no sense.

In particular, I'm speaking about Resident Evil/Silent Hill and the "This door is locked.. I need to solve some complex puzzles to get the key for it" type crap. I love the games and I love the puzzles, but it just seems like an excuse for them to throw it in for no reason.

C'mon.. you have a shotgun and an axe... you're telling me you can't bust down that wooden door?

I know the point of the game is to give you obstacles where the only way to pass is to solve a puzzle.. but PLEASE come up with a better reason for me to solve a puzzle other than that lonely wooden door that needs to be unlocked.

I had to restart my game of Final Fantasy Tactics when I couldn't get past the one on one battle with Wiegraf(?). I saved right before the fight and suddenly I was up against a guy that was infinitely more powerful that me, I didn't have the skills needed to beat him (Auto-Potion and Yell), there was no way for me to go back and level up, and it wasn't one of those fights that you were supposed to lose.
I hated how you couldn't skip through dialogue scenes in Xenogears too. I had to fight a pair of bosses (two fights against The Elements, which were preceded by a 15-20 minute cutscene, with another 5 minute scene between fights) at least 8 times before I beat them, why couldn't I just restart the battle after I died instead of starting at the last save point?
Come to think of it, the whole idea of Save Points in console RPGs pisses my off. Why shouldn't I be allowed to save wherever I want?

Everything else was pretty much easy.

I was hoping they'd add more optional enemies like that in the future!

1) Never ending bossfights. Meaning, I am at the end of the game and I have to fight the boss. Not a problem, I beat him... but oh wait, he had a second incarnation that I have to fight now... oh, he had a third also. Just let me beat the damn game.

2) Not being able to crawl or jump on to something that even I could crawl/jump on to in real life. It seems like a pretty piss poor way to define that specific level.

Making the player collect a million different types of items does not make a game deep Rare! (Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie)

Fighting games where someone can just pick up a controller and beat a semi-experienced player (i.e. Eddie Gordo in Tekken series).

Having to buy additional hardware (playing cards, gba games, card reader, tip book) in order to get the most out of your Gamecube games. If i want to play the original Metroid on my Metroid Prime disc, i have to buy and beat the GBA game. If it's already on the disc, at least allow for an alternate method of unlocking it.

On Smash Bros: Melee (otherwise a very polished game) it defaults to a 2 minute melee match everytime... i don't know of anybody who plays this scenario yet it resets everytime you hit the power button.
