Do you like micromanagement in RTS?

Micromanagement basically means going to each individual unit to use their special ability in the thick of a battle (or not, depending on the situation) Examples of games including extensive micromanagement are: Starcraft and Warcraft series. Example of game that dont include it at all would be: Ground Control, Kohan and Total War series.

Personally, I dislike micromanagement. I find clicking like mad in a big battle ruins the fun of the strategy in strategy games. Instead, games should be about general tactics when commanding armies.

The only RTS game(s) I like are the Civilization games. I'd like to try out Rise of Nations, but my PC sucks.

Yeah, I love micromanagement. You compare WarCraft to StarCraft though... And while I see the general trend, if you take the latest of those two (wc3 and sc), you realize that SC is almost all macro compared to wc3. The amount of micro needed to be competative in wc3 is nuts, and while I had almost no micro skills before this game, I've learned a ton from it.

I think it's most fun in the small scale battles which occur either at the beginning of the game when armies are still tiny, or at the end of really good games when all either side has left is a rag-tag crew of survivors and you have to really utilize everything you have left to win.

When micro really sucks, however, is when you have two huge armies clash against each other. There's simply too much going on for anyone except pros at the game to be able to handle and have any fun doing so.

Actually, RTS refers to real time stategy. Civilization games are turn bases, so they are not RTS. Rise of Nations is hard to classify.

Meh. I'll micro my important units, but I generally like to let the armies clash and see what happens, which explains why I'm not much good against humans in most RTS. Total Annihilation, though...

Too much micromanagement gives me headaches. I guess that's why I prefer FPS.

Total Annihilation is a great game. Neryly no micromanagement except when you need to use the D-guy of the commander. Awesome graphics. Tons of drastically different units. Cool superweapon. Too bad the studio made it was out of bussiness.

I don't see what's so hard about it... It's a RTS when you get down to it. I think it's about as close as they'll ever come to making a game like Civilization into an RTS, what with the way they have different "cities" on a playing field and such. However I think the micromanagement in that game has more to do with city-building and army-building than the actual fighting itself... which CAN be micromanaged to an extent, really just turns into a mobfest (unless you play it on some weirdly slow setting).

I don’t mind special player activated unit powers. Just so long as there aren’t too many of them and they all have hotkeys.

I hate it mostly. That's one of the reasons I liked Starcraft so much, I could choose the Zerg and just macro my opponent to death.

The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!"

I'm not great at micromanaging because in massive battles, it's hard to find units if I take me eyes off of them for long and they move more than a few steps. If I could play using a huge keypad with hotkeys to select whole army, squads, and individual units, then I'd be kicking ass. I was shocked when I played Star Wars: Galactic battlegrounds and Warctart III and could barely hold up againsr one enemy after years of rolling over multiple computers in Starcraft and C&C.

Well, my favorite games that included Micromangement were Sid Meier's Civilization and Sid Meier's Alpha Centuari/Crossfire. It bring so much more out of the game. I mean, if you think about some games like Command and Conquer where there's no Micromanagement, all you do is just select the number of men you need to use to destroy the enemy and that's it, game over. But games from Sid Meier allows me to take my time and increse my game experience. When I played Birth of Federation which had Micromanagement as well, it was so intense and it gave me headache all the time and I didn't mind that. Of coruse, I love to play games like Unreal tournament and Medal of Honour but the single player campaign sucks but multiplayer lets me play the game with more skills.
