Wii exclusives: are they finally coming into their own?

With the exception of a few early successes—Mario Galaxy, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Zack & Wiki, Metriod Prime 3—and a few recent ones—Super Smash Bros., Okami, Boom Blox, No More Heroes—why have the Wii exclusives been looking like crap? (I get it! It's cool how the Wii's remote works. We don't need another cooking game! And, please, slow down on the party games...!)

It’s actually kind of embarrassing. I wanted the Wii, thinking there would be more quality games after seeing what they did with Mario Galaxy. But it’s been looking like most of the games are geared towards the under-10 market. We don’t even have any kids.

With the success of the Wii, more publishers have been gradually developing more Wii exclusives. But are we going to see more titles of good quality? Games to make the Wii a must-have system? Maybe. But I’ve been worried.

Then there’s the ports. Besides some quality ports, many of them are getting poorly reviewed, as they are watered-down versions of PC, Xbox, of PS3 games or unearthed and "rejigged" GameCube or PS2 titles. I can understand there are limitations to the hardware, so I’m glad at least a few titles are turning out well.

I do have some hope. Check out this title released at the beginning of the year:

No More Heroes: full intro (NSFW):

And also check out Sega’s upcoming ultra-violent Wii exclusive MadWorld (definitely NSFW):

This is what I’m talking about. These games aren’t so much about touting the best graphics or newest technologies; they are about style and gameplay. I want to play them both.

And recently, I saw this. It’s called Spyborgs, an exclusive from Capcom:

This is also looking pretty good to me. I like the humour and potentially fun gameplay.

What are your forecasts? Do you see a growth in quality Wii exclusives? Have you seen or heard of anything good coming down the pipeline?

And does it often take this long for a system to come into its own with game titles?

Okami actually came out for the PS2 before the Wii so it's not an exclusive. The Wii is a system for the casual market unfortunately, so the only games that I think will be quality exclusives are their already established franchises like Zelda and Mario. However we won't see those until the later half of 2009 or beginning of 2010 if anything. I'm also surprised that MadWorld is even on the Wii to begin with since Nintendo is not really known for having mature rated games on their systems. I realize there's a few but they've always been known as the 'kiddie' system.

Not really. Look at the 360 and the PS3. The 360 has some amazing titles that are well worth buying the system for (Halo 3, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Fable 2 soon, etc.) The PS3 was a little bit slower but I personally think the system is worth buying for Metal Gear Solid 4 alone (and it was for me.) Some other games coming soon for it like LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2 in February, Resistance 2, God of War 3 later in 2009.

When I bought my Wii the only game I bought for it was Brawl. I haven't bought another game for it since. I rented Metroid Prime and Okami and I couldn't even finish them. I just ended up playing my 360 instead. Hell, the only time I really play my Wii is once a week when a friend of mine comes over to play Brawl with me, because the online is a complete failure. Their E3 conference was a complete joke, and a slap in the face to any dedicated Nintendo fan. I mean seriously, Wii Music? Are you fucking kidding?

Ah, didn't know that. So it's a successful port. Fair enough. The Wii could use more of those.

I'm hoping there will be more. Nintendo needs to reinvigorate their innovation. They need a new Mario and a new Link. They at least need to remind the world that they can make quality games. Enough of the crap already.

I was really surprised to see it myself too, especially as an exclusive. I'd really like to see the demographics on Wii players. I don't think it's as much as a kiddie system as it has been. Video games have hit the mainstream. They are pretty much as popular as movies and television, aren't they? I don't think Nintendo will remain so focused on the younger crowd; not with the unit sales they've been seeing. I'm hoping, anyway.

This is what I mean. We didn't get these other machines because of their cost, but also because Nintendo had some unique games that appealed to both of us. (Baraka_Gurl isn't a hardcore gamer.)

This is exactly the kind of shit I'm talking about. I really hope Nintendo pays attention to which games actually sell and get good reviews because there's a whole slew of them that are being panned.

Wii has definitely lost its appeal to me a long time ago. The first thing I thought of when I saw the new controller was "Man, that would be awesome for a lightsaber game." I've yet to see one, though I did hear they were making a lightsaber dueling game or something. It's probably too far fetched for it to be the game that I want it to be though.

Smash Bros. was the only game that I looked forward to for it, but honestly, it's somewhat of a disappointment. The online sucks ass. Both times I played with Eso, I lagged like an asshole and couldn't really put up a fight. And, they took out a lot of the competitive nature of the game. I can't imagine hosting a Brawl tournament over a Melee tournament.

Galaxy was amazingly fun, but amazingly short. I beat it within the span of a week. And, Twilight Princess isn't technically an exclusive. It came out for the Gamecube too.

If Nintendo's not going to come out with another title outside of these 3 and maybe the Metroid series, then they need to go ahead and work on a sequel to these. At the very least, keep the fans of these.

Yet it's still the best selling console.... because for the most part all people play is the sports disc.

I liked House of the Dead quite a bit, but I really enjoy 'light' gun games, and technically it's not exclusive, but with the right attachment the remote works wonderfully as a firearm.

But yea I play more virtual console and gamecube then actual wii games on my wii.

I'm so glad you're using yours. I remember how long it took you to find one.

Can you believe I haven't been able to hook mine up since I moved? One of these days I'll have to get someone to set it up.

Madworld and Spyborgs look alright, but I didn't like No More Heroes. Very repetitive gameplay thinly veiled by a shallow otaku culture theme that shamelessly panders to the "hardcore" gaming audience. Considering all the internet hype around it, I was expecting the game to blow me away. Instead, the game just blew.

Well, Miyamoto did announce at E3 that a new Zelda, Mario, and Pikmin games are in development. Personally, I loved Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, and Super Mario Galaxy, and I think the next games will be good as well.
But it's true, it's frustrating to wait for the release. Oh here, my frantic gaming-news reading also showed me The Conduit, a First Person Shooter that looks like a ton of fun. A very standard plot, involving killing aliens, but I think if done well and if it uses a good control scheme it could rock us all. Here:

Graphics don't look half-bad, either.

The developers also release a video that shows off what actually can be done with the Wii in terms of graphics:

So despair not, my friends!

The Wii is a damn joke just like I said it would be from the start. I was flamed repeatedly when the Wii came out (during the phase when the PS3 was bashed 24/7 and Sony was rumored to go out of business because of the PS3 "failure") because I said that the Wii had a gimmick control scheme and would wear off. I said the PS3 and 360 would eventually win the quality-game market and even then I was flamed. Now the PS3 and 360 are the consoles putting out consistently good games and the Wii is nothing in comparison to true gamers.

For the casual gamer market the Wii is perfection. Like someone said above the sports game that comes bundled is enough to make it a success. It's just not a true console for regular gamers and it's starting to show.

I heard No More Heroes sucked though I admit I've never played it.

If you look at Movie Reviews, Music Reviews, TV Show Reviews, Game Reviews, Book Reviews - Metacritic.com the number of good (or green coded) games on the PS3 and 360 is staggering and the number on the Wii is embarrassing. I am glad for Nintendo's success but I love shoving shit in the face of the Wii-loving, Sony-hating fanboys that were foaming at the mouth over the Wii when it launched.

It may be a joke, but it makes money, lots and lots of it.

I haven't played it much lately because I've been busy, but I have a list of games I still need to play. A short list, but a list, nonetheless.

This is what I'm talking about. I love Metacritic.com. I always check in to see if Wii ratings ever improve. I'm still waiting.

The Wii is only a joke because of game developers. There's nothing wrong with the machine. I've seen some nice-looking graphics. They aren't as mind-blowing as the other machines, but they're good for console games. Good enough for me at least. Now how about some good games?!

I'm patient.

Plus I'm getting my new gaming PC today.... this is where I get my biggest gaming fix.
