Perhaps you've heard..?
According to the just-unembargoed research paper “A Bacterium That Can Grow by Using Arsenic Instead of Phosphorus,” the much-debated possibility of a terrestrial “shadow biosphere” (that is, “a second genesis for life on this planet”) has allegedly been confirmed by scientists studying the microbes of California’s arsenic-rich Mono Lake. From Cosmic Log:
In the paper published today, the researchers report that some of the bacteria could survive on arsenic and incorporate it into their cellular biochemistry. Instead of the usual phosphate-rich DNA, they observed arsenate-rich DNA. Heightened levels of arsenic also showed up in the cell’s proteins and fats. The scientists used mass spectroscopy, radioactive labeling and X-ray fluorescence to confirm that the arsenic was really being used in the biomolecules rather than merely contaminating the cells.
Even life as we don't know it. I think humans typically sell short the other little critters and microbes while overinflating our own importance. I never met a tree I didn't like.
Given the content of Jet's post above, if I now look at the Periodic Table I'll predict that pretty soon some smart human will stumble upon critters who thrive in Antimony and Bismuth environments in other parts of our Universe. |

I don't like a lot of trees. They're really stand-off-ish. So long as they leave me be, I let them alone.
- - - Here's a post I hope to one day re-contribute into my TFP Aquarium idea thread. So much so, I'll post it here first so you know what it might look like then, in the future. (... continued ... from elsewhere) The Hippocampus Denise Seahorse is no bigger than most human fingernails at about 16 millimeters from the its snout to the tip of its tail. It’s so small that experts had previously believed it to be the young of the next smallest seahorse species, the Hippocampus bargibanti. It’s hard to even discern most Hippocampus denise seahorses from the coral they live in off the coast of Indonesia. [webecoist.]

Don't worry, the earth and moon are not actually colliding during the upcoming total eclipse of the moon on Dec. 20 & 21, 2010.

That settles it. I am now on the record in believing we sorely need a "Stars in Space" topic, even if it only just pictures, links, and our three selves.

I'll 3rd that.
...though I am under the impression that "the authorities" have looked askance at pictures only threads. I don't believe that's change my habits, but it crosses my mind when I do it...sort of like a partial eclipse of the mind. |

... I have no idea how anything at all relates to being "technical", other than discussions in automotives, computers, or clocks.
Everything else is "in actuality".

(Do you believe? Do you believe - does this count as a 'space post' {coast to coast}? I want to believe.) - - - -- (to note: I make it a habit of rarely uttering the hackneyed terms of 'technical', 'irony', and/or 'you know what I mean?', because, to state it like what I ate for lunch today , {"Franks"} it is an unillustrated but known fact that 96.7% of the Western population uses the above in-sentence phrases in precisely the opposite {channeling Lex Luthor: WRONG!} manner. Just to put it out there.)

if it's Gazpacho, cold is OK with me. Or any of these cold soups would be quite tasty in my mouth:
Cold borscht – based on beets. Cucumber soup - based on cucumbers, known in various cuisines. Dashi soup (Japanese) - fish stock soup, with seasonal vegetables. Gazpacho – (Spanish) pureed tomato and vegetable soup. Okroshka – (Russian) kvass- or kefir-based vegetable and ham soup. Sour cherry soup – A cream-based Hungarian soup. Salmorejo - (Spanish) Tomato soup with garlic and bread crumbs. Tarator – A Bulgarian cold soup made from yogurt and cucumbers. Vichyssoise – (French-American) creamy potato and leek soup, served with chives. Sayur Asem - An Indonesian soup that tastes sour and spicy. Naengmyeon - (Korean) buckwheat noodles in a tangy iced beef broth, raw julienned vegetables, a slice of a Korean pear, and often a boiled egg and/or cold beef |

Sometimes I like to put "nonsense" terms into a search engine to see what comes up.
So I just found out that "sexy soup" brings up this tee shirt: ...as well as a photo of eight hefty Asian guys all in a hot tub, a few other sexy pics, and my favorite, that cute girl from Harry Potter in a bathtub. In case you need to know. |

—Anonymous Wikipedia addict We can't repel information of that magnitude! on a personal note: I'm a good example of this; unless I have he mentality of get in, get out with the knowledge I initially came in for, it is very easy for one to suscept into "link-jumping" or "topic-turning" for hours on end when you just follow a stray blue underline on Wikipedia. In fact, I've had a "crush" with the tvtropes.org website on-and-off for nearly a year now, but only now, have I realized how big and diverse it has gotten in the mean. It's huge, and nearly everything is interconnected to anything. And it's also quite hilarious and nerdy. What comedy isn't though? Dude, (and I don't say that often) and they even have an archetype and/or name for this sort of occurrence: the Archive Binge.
