That Muttart Conservatory looks really interesting. I would love to go there. Speaking of plant collections and the Toronto Zoo, On the many tours that I have taken there, they always point out that their indignous (to the various ecological zones) plant collection is by far more valuable than their animal collection.

I agree, it does look cool. I haven't taken a tour of the zoo since they closed the train, usually we just wander. I knew they had the plants I didn't know their value. Neat.

The Grateful Dead Live Recording Archives?

OK, that's in the States, but it's run by a Canadian

Is this some sort of film archive?

EDIT: Found it. It's the National Archives Preservation Centre in Gatineau PQ.

Quote:
Over 71 000 hours of short and full-length films, documentaries, silent films and "talkies", in black and white and in colour. The oldest film in our collection was made in 1897;
Over 2.5 million architectural drawings, plans and maps, some of which date back to the beginning of the 16th century;
About 3.18 million megabytes of information in electronic formats, including more than 9500 Canadian periodicals and books available online;
Millions of books in various languages for all tastes and ages, from rare first editions and livres d'artiste to children's classics and popular fiction;
Over 21.3 million photographic images, captured since the 1850s;
Textual records and publications for federal, provincial, territorial and foreign governments;
Over 270 000 hours of video and sound recordings;
Over 343 000 works of art, including watercolours, sketches, miniatures, oil paintings and caricatures;
The largest collection of Canadian sheet music in the world, documentation related to music in Canada and about 200 000 recordings on disks and records of all formats, piano rolls, reels and spools, and eight-track tapes;
The Canadian Postal Archives;
An impressive collection of medals, seals, posters and coats of arms;
Textual archives for various individuals and groups who have contributed to Canada's cultural, social, economic and political development;
National, provincial and territorial newspapers from across Canada, from dailies to student newspapers, and from Aboriginal magazines to ethnic community newsletters;
Periodicals, microfilms, manuscripts and theses; and
Portraits of over one million Canadians since 1710.

What job could you have had?

You are correct.

A couple of my friends who were in Film Studies landed jobs there as film archivists. Another friend was (and I think still is) a programmer for the film archives screenings.

At one point I gave serious thought to following their example... instead I followed my girlfriend (now wife) back to Toronto.

very cool. Is this all film? is there a move to convert to digital and perhaps make it available to the public via web access?

We're richer for it.

You should be able to guess the city in this photo pretty easily, but I'd like either the name of the (awesome) event, or the name of the venue.

Some of that is film, some video tape... I understand that there is a move to digitize everything. I don't know what the timetable is on that though.

awesome.

I have to say, this thread is educational, AND fun!

*it's very neat to see how cities such as Winnipeg, Calgary have changed since I last drove through them circa 1984...

I have family in Sudbury. I've seen that damn thing in person.. for some reason I didn't think it was all too impressive.

I've rarely been out of Ontario, but I've seen a lot of the towns that are here. Eventually something was going to click.
