There's coffee wars happening: Macdonalds has launched a free coffee campaign for the next two weeks. By my calculations that beats the odds of Timmie's RUTR by 100%

How is Macdonalds coffee now? Haven't had it in about 9 years or so, and then it was like paint, awful, vile liquid.

you just walk in ask for a coffee. You don't have to order anything else. The coffee is vastly improved now, nothing like the awful, vile paint from the days of yore. I think they invested in premium coffee production a coupleof years ago, but I've noticed that it is very flavourful, with a stronger taste than Tim's. Although, I prefer dark roast and find Tim's to be a bit bland.

Coffee will be a hot topic this month.

While Tim Hortons was rolling out the next instalment of its 24-year-old contest, McDonald's announced it would be pouring free small coffees throughout the day for the next two weeks across Canada.

Can you smell a coffee war brewing?

McDonald's communications manager Stephanie Sorensen stressed the golden arches wasn't trying to rain on the roll-up parade.

"This is actually a promotion that we had planned beforehand," Sorensen said. "The program has been very, very successful for us."

McDonald's has had the giveaway twice before but this time is extending the free coffee offer to the entire day instead of just at breakfast.

While not divulging specific numbers, Sorensen says the giveaway eventually does translate to sales, noting last year McDonald's saw a 30% increase nationwide in coffee sales.

McDonald's isn't the only one taking a shot at coffee giveaways.

Country Style announced that participating locations will serve up a free medium coffee on Wednesday morning as part of its Coffee Lover's Day promotion.

Got McDonalds today instead ot Tim's. It is free and there will be plenty of time to win a free coffee in a couple of weeks.

McDonalds' coffee is pretty good. They make a good Americano and the pricing is good compared to any of the more expensive places and very similar to Tim's.

how many trips a day??? Well, a shift is 9 hours long, the distance is only about .8 of a mile, approx 8 minutes across, plus time to unload/load. A single trip is 15 minutes, round trip 30 minutes, so 4 crossings an hour, so I'm coming into contact with a Timmies about 36 times per shift.

Tim Hortons aims for 600 new Canadian stores, 300 in U.S. by 2013

OAKVILLE, Ont. - Tim Hortons (TSX:THI) is preparing to serve up a new restaurant format as part of its expansion plans over the next three years.

The new restaurant concept will be piloted in at least 10 existing locations. The redesign is intended to more sharply define Tim Hortons image with what the company calls "enhanced finishes, fixtures and seating areas."

The iconic Ontario-based company known for its coffee, doughnuts and light meals says it expects 900 new stores of various formats by 2013.

They would include 600 stores in Canada where Tim Hortons already has more than 3,000 locations under its banner.

Up to 60 locations in Canada will be converted to include the Cold Stone Creamery concept in partnership with an American ice cream chain.

The restaurant operator says it plans to spend $180 million to $200 million this year to support its growth initiatives.

The plans were outlined ahead of a Friday investors conference hosted by the Oakville, Ont.-headquartered company, which currently has 563 locations in the United States.

The company is aiming for same-store sales growth of three per cent to five per cent in Canada and two per cent to four per cent in the United States.

It's also aiming to earn between $1.95 and $2.05 per share.

Beyond 2010, Tims has set the goal of 12 per cent to 15 per cent compound annual average growth in earnings per share from 2011 to 2013.

"Our strategies will continue to transform Tim Hortons, not only adding significant scale but also introducing important additional growth layers to our business platform to extend our position as a leader in the North American restaurant industry," said Don Schroeder, president and CEO.

"We are a growth company with significant long-term opportunities in Canada, and we are also excited by the prospects of continued profitable growth in the U.S., and potentially internationally in the longer term."

Much of the growth in Canada this year will be focused on Quebec, western Canada and major urban locations. In the United States, it will be focused on major regional markets such as New York, Ohio and Michigan.

The company says it plans to spread out from these bases, with about 30 per cent of its development activities between 2010 and 2013 in markets adjacent to its existing territories.

so last week, I redeemed a free coffee and received a large coffee, with a rollup the rim cup. This week, I redeemed another free coffee, and instead got a medium in a plain cup. Both at the same store (Parliament street in Cabbagetown).
