The Walking Dead (comics)
ok, i know this series has been mentioned in a few threads, but having just finished the 2nd trade, i think it's time that it had a thread of its own (rather than continuing to stick it into the Land of the Dead topic).
i used to buy comics as a youngster, but it's been a good 20 years since i've bought anything on a regular basis. i have 2 boys now that are into the whole superhero thing, so from time to time i stop into a small local comics shop to pick up a current issue of some Batman or Spider-Man related book, but that's about it. I always look around a bit to see if anything might interest me, but it's pretty overwhelming. Heck, even in picking out that occasional Batman book, it seems that there are a dozen or so different tiitles to choose from. so, anyway, on a recent trip, I ran into the first trade of TWD. being a big horror fan when it comes to fiction and movies (and particularly keen on zombie things), i figured i'd give it a try and i am REALLY enjoying this series, although the change in art from the first trade to the second was a little bit of an adjustment. some of the characters i had become acquainted with in the first trade looked different suddenly - like watching a TV show with the same characters but different actors playing them. also, i have to say that i liked the art in the first trade a bit more than that of the second, but the story is still top notch. i know there's a third trade out there, and i'll be picking it up soon, but... i'm not really sure where to go on TWD... will trades keep coming out as the story progresses? am i better off just trying to pick up the regular issues from that point forward? oh, i had another selfish reason for starting this thread and that was to hopefully get some suggestions on other things to try out - whether regular books or trades. like i said, it's been a while for me... i have the crow, the watchmen, the dark knight returns, a few others, but i'm looking to get back into the comics thing a bit. i've considered picking up some of the sin city or hellboy trades because i dug those movies (and some other frank miller bits)... so, anybody have some favorites they'd like to share? my local comics store would thank you! |

Thanks to a post by Troublebot (I think that's the login) in the thread on "Best Zombie Movie of all time" where he suggested that everyone check out The Walking Dead, I picked up the 1st trade (issues 1 - 6). I read it all in one sitting and went out (I think the same day, but possibly the next day) and picked up the 2nd trade (issues 7 - 12). I never really read comics much at all when I was younger, but it sounded like something I'd like and I was right.
I agree that I like the art in the first trade, done by Tony Moore, more than the 2nd trade's art, done by Charlie Adlard, but Adlard's art has grown on me. When I bought the 2nd trade, I think the individual issues were up to #17. Being hooked and not wanting to wait for the 3rd trade, I went out and tracked down issues 13 - 17 individually. I think the 3rd trade (13 - 18) came out not too long after issue 18 came out, so just waiting and buying trades is a possible way to go instead of buying individual issues, but the wait for a trade while the 6 issues that will make up that trade come out would be kinda rough. I'm not planning on picking up the 3rd trade since I already have the individual issues. The trade has nothing extra that the issues don't (at least I'm pretty sure on that). The nice thing about them is that they collect all the issues in one book and they have their own really cool cover artwork. The issues are really the way to go though: -you get the nice cover artwork on each one (done by Tony Moore, the original TWD artist, who still does all the covers on the issues and trades for whatever reason) -the letters section is in the issues but not in the trades. The letters section is huge (according to what I've read, it's possibly the biggest in any currently running comic and many don't even have a letters section). -the issues also have started occassionally (maybe once every 3 issues?) including a character sheet with a short synopsis of details that are updated every time the listing is printed. Grendel, you can find some The Walking Dead discussion here: http://www.imagecomics.com/messagebo...582293edabdec6 Robert Kirkman himself frequently posts there. They've got a cover art thread, a little bit of fan art, and there's a thread there with release dates of Kirkman comic books (although the person who started it hasn't updated it in a while). I'd like to hear about other comic recommendations from other people as well. Doesn't necessarily have to be about zombies. Oh, and this thread needs a bit of color, so here's one cover (issue 5, I believe; if I posted some of my favorite later covers, there might be a few spoilers):

Image Comics Online Comics section Personally, I didn't really like it. I'm sure there's probably a lot of comics out there that I'd like, I just don't know what they are. As for The Walking Dead, I'd LOVE to see it made into a cartoon series (with the animation of the characters based on either Tony Moore or Charlie Adlard's renditions of the characters, of course). To keep the violent elements which are inherent in the story intact, they could put it on Bravo (or HBO or Showtime if they thought it could be popular enough). I know it'll never happen, but I'd love to see that (as opposed to a live action TV series or movie; of course, I'd love to see either one of those too (and I wouldn't doubt that there might be a chance of a live action adaptation of it at some point), but would rather see a cartoon version (which I imagine would have the slimmest chance of ever happening).

Just read Invincible from your link (thanks again!)... An interesting start. Might be worth checking into the first trade, since it looks like it would run me all of $10. Incidentally, digging around a bit more on Kirkman, I see that he's done some Marvel Team-Up books (lately?) that have featured two of my favorites - Spidey and Moon Knight. I'll definitely be checking on those.

So the Waking Dead is a zombie story? I'll have to check it out.
I recommend "The Fixer" by Joe Sacco. It's non-fiction and probably not appropriate for children. I really dig his drawing style, kind of a R.Crumb style realism. I'm also really digging "the Invisibles" on DC's Vertigo imprint. Apparently it was pretty influential on the first Matrix movie. I found about 55 issues online and am on issue 6. They changed pencilers after issue 4 which was kind of a let down, but the writing is great, definitely aimed at adults. |

booray - i'm bkirby over on the image comics board you posted the link to...
so i knew the main character of TWD was a Kentucky cop, and then got to reading some of the info on that image board (including the interview that Kirkman did with suicidegirls) and find out he's from KY as well... then the dude on the image comics board mentions a store here in in Lexington, KY - where i live and it turns out... http://www.campuscircle.net/review.cfm?r=715 Kirkman lives in my city! crazy stuff! |

I love TWD, i dont have money to buy the comics, so i just mooch off my brother and read his when he buys them, and they are incredible.
If you're into the X-men stuff, Joss Whedon came out with The Astonishing X-men, it doesnt come out too often, its got the first trade out and they're only in the second trade now, which is AMAZING! the art style is really good in it. Also Ultimate X-men is really good, they are a few trades in, they have like 3 big hard cover books and a bunch of smaller trade books, its really good. Obviously im a marvel fan. OH YEAH! if you havent ever read Preacher, do it, its fantastic. Ive only read the first trade and a little of another, but i love that comic. Thats about all the comics i like to keep up with, usually i just read an issure here or there of random comics my friend buys. |

Early last year I decided it was time to delve into the world of comics finally, after years of wanting to and being sidetracked by my other nerd activities.
I follow one comic religiously and it is The Walking Dead. I bought the first tradeback and pretty much flipped out over how cool it was, then grabbed the second which had only just been released. Then it was a lonnng wait for the third trade and I was hating it. The cover art on the trades actually lines up if you lay them side by side, pretty cool might I add. Now it's another long wait for the next trade because I prefer one annoyingly intense cliffhangers every six months as opposed to one every month. I love the characters too! |

I saw a hardcover for Invincible at Oxford Comics in Atlanta the other day. Couldn't figure out how many issues it collected, but I'd definitely pick up one for TWD if/when it comes out.

I'm lucky in that my office is 2 blocks from Forbidden Planet, a great sci-fi/comic store here in NYC. It's a slow day today and the boss is out, so I picked up all 3 trades. FANTASTIC! Thanks for the heads up on these. I'm heading back after work to pick up 19 & 20. I decided I like the Adlard art quite a bit more than Moore's.
I'm a big fan of zombie flicks (note my sig) and books so this was a nice addition...given that I haven't purchased a comic since 1983 I was super pleased.

I can't rememebr owning many comics until a kid in highschool told me I had to read this and handed me... Watchmen.
I pretty quickly collected alot more Alan Moore (V for Vendetta being a fave.), but stayed away from the other stuff till I found a comic store I liked and started looking at the trade paperbacks. I'd say I have around 100-150 of them now. I've given up on alot of the more "commercial" stuff (although Grant Morrison doesn't disappoint and I'd like to look into Joss Whedon's X-men Series, even though I'm not a big X-men fan). The two series I keep up with these days are The Walking Dead and Y-The Last Man. I'd love to see The Walking Dead as a tv series, but why go animation? It could be done with actors just as well. It's the writing that gets to me. Even though the caracters are put in this "fantasy" situation, they act very human and have very human problems. Glad you started this thread Grendel and if I had a hand in anyone picking up this series, I'm glad of that too.

As far as adapting it into a tv series, I know that animation isn't absolutely necessary, but I guess I just am really used to the way the characters in the comic look and I'd love to see a fully animated version of it. I wouldn't complain about any live action adaptation though. I'd still be amongst the first to line up (or tune in, depending on how it's adapted).

Picked up TWD issue #21 today and read it already. Kinda sucks to be waiting with anticipation for so long and then it feels like I fly through it. Come on Issue 22!!
I think I oughta go back and reread the whole thing from the beginning. Haven't done that yet.

Man, at this point I would almost pay someone to tell me what's been happening since the third trade paperback.
Hear me people? I would almost PAY!

I could not deal with a Robert Kirkman cliffhanger every month. It would be like nerd PMS.
'Yo man what's up?' 'ShutthefuckupbeforeIkillyoufuckstain!' 'Have you been reading Walking Dead Again?' 'Oh that is SO typical!' |

Just finished reading issue 27 the other day. Not sure how I feel about what happens on the last page since it felt kinda predictable, a little forced, and maybe a little cliche-ish too. Still can't wait for the next one. I think I heard the next trade will be out at the end of May (I guess they're trying to catch back up to their release schedule) which will include issues 25-30.
