Tad William's "Otherworld" Series
Has anyone read these books?
I am almost done with the first novel and gotta say I am liking it... my mother-in-law picked up the 2nd book in the series for me for christmas it was in the bargain book area only 6 bucks hardcover but she didnt realize it was book 2. I had never heard of this guy before, so i went to the local used book store and picked up the first book it is over 700 pages and a little slow at first but now i am finding it hard to put down. Has anyone read the whole serie? I think its 4 books. Is it as good all the way through? I notice its similar to the Matrix movies. DB |

I really enjoyed this series, but be prepared for it to not be what you expect. My main complaint would be the ending, it's almost as if Tad couldn't think of a good conclusion, so he just left it hanging. With that being said, the journey getting to the end is one hell of a ride. I say keep reading!
Oh, and in case you don't know, Tad Williams earlier trilogy, beginning with "The Dragonbone Chair", is totally awesome. Happy Reading. |

I've read and loved the first two novels and started the third a couple of years back but never finished it... I keep buying more books and reading those first I've got the fourth as well, hopefully you guys will start saying some motivating stuff to make me finish the series before reading any of my other novels.

I couldn't get into the first otherworld book (I have a proof copy somewhere).
Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, though (The series that starts with the Dragonbone Chair) may be the best bit of epic fantasy writing ever, though. I'd say every bit as good as Tolkien, nearly as realisitic in it's own way as George RR Martin's Song of Ice & Fire, every bit as unique as the Black Company, and so much shorter than the Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan needs to finish that damn thing already. Grumble.)

I read the first book but haven't read any of the others. It dragged a little to much for me but it did have promise. I will probably finish the series off one one day.

I got through them. They read slow, then something happens, then it drags again.
Tad Williams is pretty good, but he could've cut 500 pages out of the 2800, or so, that the 4 books make up. For me, I got tired of our cast being lost in YET ANOTHER, strange fantasy world in Otherland. Yep, they're in there...no new info...they're still lost...yup...it's wierd...ho hum...oh no! watch out, the river took them to...suprise!...another strange place they can't figure out. A thousand pages of that was enough. I was glad when the damn thing ended. Oddly enough, I liked the book (it's one story spread across 4 books, hence-"book") enough to finish it. I just can't recommend them. I feel they lose momentum. However, if you're looking for a story that can pause the storyline for hundreds of pages, or you're a fan of daytime soaps, this could be for you. Seriously, if he could have cut 800-1000 pages, I'd have been all for it. You'd still be talking about 2000 pages. That's bloody enough.

I loved the Foreword in the City of Golden Shadow. It got me excited as hell to read the book but after a few chapters it was dull and didn't hold my interest long. I guess if I had the patients they'd be great books.

I own and have read through both Williams series mentioned above. Personally, I liked Otherland more than the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Trilogy, but that's just because I like sf more than fantasy. I agree that Williams could have cut about 500 pages from Otherland, but I think that the plot twists alone made it worth reading through.
if you haven't read it, think "Memento meets The Cell." or something similar.
