Do we have to be honest? Okay, I took my mother to see Mall Cop. Well, what ELSE can you take your mother to see these days??? And the worst part of being honest is I have to admit I laughed out loud. Paul Blart is hilarious. I enjoyed it despite the painfully schmultzy, hokey parts.

Last movie I saw (thanks to Netflix, of course...) was Lions for Lambs. 4 Out of 5 Stars. Here's why:
At first I really wanted to hate it because of Tom Cruise being a leading character in it, and yet he was cast perfectly for the role. Smarmy as hell. And so damn Republican. Better yet was Robert Redford as a burned out aging college professor. Old Bob - not at all "airbrushed up" or in a hazy filter and acting like a movie idol. Meryl Streep, geez....such a low key role. But valuable in a subtle way. Surprisingly I keep re-hashing the story line over & over and thinking about how scary & truthful and yet campy that was!

Crank: High Voltage. 8/10.
Yes, I went to see this. Before you shun me forever, I'd like to point out that I mainly went because I had a free ticket. I went in expecting a terrible movie... But I was pleasantly surprised! I thought it was hilarious- they created an over-the-top ridiculous parody on action movies. It was very clear that the filmmakers were NOT taking themselves seriously when they made this movie and it worked brilliantly. Just... ridiculous.

Sophie Scholl - The Final Days. 5/5. This movie (based on true events) is about a German college girl who is part of an anti-Nazi group during WWII. She is caught, questioned, tried, and executed in a 6 day timeframe. The movie was very well done and the lead actress was fantastic. It's not an uplifting movie - I get choked up at movies every once in awhile but I was crying at the end. Definitely worth seeing if you don't mind subtitles.

The Wrestler - 9/10
Was good. That's all I can say, really. Was just a good story with good acting. Timecrimes - 8/10 A simple story about time travel. It is done right. It loses points because the story is so simple... very few risks. This movie was 95% storyboarding and 5% execution. Its simplicity is inspiring though. Tyson - 8/10 Gives you a perspective on Mike Tyson that you probably never had before. It shows you that even the most revered sports icons are still human and are really no better than you or me. Abre Los Ojos - 10/10 I'm not rating the movie here. I'm rating Penelope Cruz's breasts. Actually, its a great little mindfuck. 30 Days of Night - 7/10 A cool vampire flick. 1408 - 3/10 This movie starts out good, but by the time the dude actually enters the room, all the interesting parts have happened. Let The Right One In - 9/10 A very fresh and engaging turn on the ol' vampire mythology. Great storytelling as well. The very last scene gives an unexpected payoff. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - 8/10 I was astounded how much sex is in this movie. Well, I wanted a Charlie Kaufman movie and I sure got one. RocknRolla - 8/10 I like Guy Ritchie movies. So sue me. Gerard Butler is hilarious. The Lives of Others - 6/10 It was good, just so slow. I can't just rate a movie based on its artistic merits, I have to be entertained too. In Bruges - 10/10 I loved it. I've never liked Colin Farrell until this.

Big Fish 10/10: This is a fantastic movie. It is very creative, beautifully paced and funny. When I first heard about this movie (it is from 2004), I figured it was just weird. I love being surprised about a movie.

The Wrestler - 7/10
I prefer nearly all of Aronofsky's films over this one. I thought that the cinematography was uninspired and the story was standard. While viewing it, I imagined it edited with commercial breaks on a network like USA. The Reader 8/10 Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes were both good. It was nicely shot. I just wasn't that impressed at the end. |

Wolverine - 5/10
Too much cliched cheesiness that could have worked had the other Xmen movies not existed (especially X2, which I kept thinking about because of Stryker). There's a fine line in a movie where you can show too much vs. too little. Too little and it's hard to follow, too much and it feels "dumbed down." Things got a bit overkill here (quite a few SPOILERS!)Spoiler: Chopping away at the fire escape, slow motion when he's cutting the locks ala "Price is Right" audience member, the dog-tag maker stamping out WOLVERINE after he adopts the name, deadpool's head making a perfect downward spiral in the Nuclear cooling towers, the calmly walking away from a massive explosion hero move, always shooting Sabretooth at the same angle before he's about to do something menacing which made for lots of unintentional hilarity. Some parts of the movie were really good Spoiler: that opening montage was BRILLIANT, but it's hard to enjoy them when they're stuck between such strong cheese. What would the geek equivalent to a rape shower be? |

this movie was horrible. the only reason we didn't stage a walkout midway thru was because at that point we were having too much fun doing the mystery science theater 3000 thing. and to make it even worse, the people around us were CRACKING up at our shenanigans. 1) the same people who did 'who framed roger rabbit' must have done the special effects for this movie, using the same techniques and technology of that era. 2) the story was pointless and followed no real flow 3) it followed NONE, i repeat, NONE of the x-men canon 4) CHEEEEEEESYYYYYYYYY 5) gambit had a southern draw, and slight at that, not a cajun accent the only reason it doesn't get a zero is the opening montage is really good, as evilbeefchan pointed out.

Martyrs 7/10
I want to give this movie a higher score because the first half was so great. It started out as a great french horror film about torture and revenge but the latter part turned into torture porn. I found it to be quite disturbing, Mostly because unlike other films of this genre, I actually liked the main characters. They weren't fuck anything with a heart beat, party all night characters that you almost enjoy seeing tortured like the tards in the hostel movies. If anyone has seen this movie, I'd love to hear your comments on it.

Saw X-Men Origins last night. If X-men 3 was a turd, this was a peanut someone picked out of it. Pure Crap. If you're like me and just wanted to see it for Deadpool don't bother. He has 5 minutes screen time and 3 lines. Pure shit.

Broken : With Heather Graham and Jeremy Sisto as heroin addicts. If you don't mind flashbacks and a little time warp it's a damn good movie. Heather plays a waitress trying to break free from Jeremy Sisto and her heroin addiction. Some great support from actors like Jake Busey, Tess Harper and Linda Hamilton. Heather's acting was awesome to say the least. Not a big Jeremy Sisto fan but he was decent.
10/10 Bled: A weird take on the whole Vampire genre. Not bad but very weird. Female artist meets older guy who turns her onto a drug that eventually makes her a vampire. Wasn't impressed with the acting or the storyline. The idea was very interesting tho and with a stronger storyline this movie may have been better. But the actors all needed replaced. 3/10 The Wrestler: heard a lot about this movie, everyone talking about how great it was. I found it somewhat interesting but shallow. The acting was decent and the ending somewhat heart tugging. Not a big fan of Mickey Rourke but he did a good job, I was surprised. 6/10 Identity: What can I say every time I watch this movie I love it more and see more. John Cusak, Ray Liotta, Amanda Peet, just a great fucking cast. Well acted, lots of twists and turns.... shame it wasn't very well received. Would love to see another movie with Cusak and Liotta together again, they have a chemistry that could truly be that of a great team. 10/10 Starship Troopers 3: I liked the first 2, #2 was my favorite. This one has a good plot and idea for the story but it lacks development of character they are all very superficial which means the actors may be good actors but the part in this movie doesn't allow it. It would have been better if Neil Patrick Harris had revived his role and played the Sky Marshall. 7.5/10

'THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL'-2008 remake with Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly :
There should be a law against making remakes of any movie. I liked Jennifer Connelly and the color film but just about everything else in this film I watched on a DVD yesterday was not as good as the original movie. The robot that arrives with Klatuu is pretty cool looking but the spaceship: big color changing spheres are not as exciting as the silver flying saucer in the first movie. Also the robot never gets much screen time and the ending in the 2008 film is weird. I read the story that the first movie is taken from and IMO the movie was much better than the dull and unexciting story. |

Star Trek: 11/10. Awesome movie, had everything, comedy, action, some fantastic lines (Oooh, I'd love to get my hands on her ample nacelles!), a little interspecies romance (Spock and Uhura, who'd have figured?), great story about how the crew ends up together, excellent chemistry between Spock and Kirk. I wasn't too sure about the revision of the Trek-verse, but now that I've seen it, it's a whole new ballgame. Bring on the sequels!

Liam Neeson was such a bad ass in this movie. I liked most of the things in this movie. My only minor complain is that every thing works too damn well for Liam Neeson. He's damn near omnipotent in the movie.

Star Trek: I have to minus 5 points for the Nokia product placement so I can only give this one a 10 out of 10! "Are you out of your Vulcan mind!?" Classic. Bones was spot on. Best character of the bunch, for sure. I hoped for a little more onscreen time for Scotty but quality over quantity. They really messed with canon that's for sure. Not that it's a bad thing. Star Trek has always delved into time travel and sometimes you can't just "reset" things.

Eagle Versus Shark 7/10
A Kiwi Napoleon Dynamite. It was mildly entertaining. Happy Go Lucky 8.5/10 Directed by Mike Leigh. The first half hour was a bit boring, but by the end I enjoyed it. An interesting character study of a woman whose outlook is a overly positive. Barbarian Invasions 8.5/10 It won the academy award for best foreign film in 2003. A French film about an academic dying of cancer and his friends/family. It was interesting. Last edited by sapiens; 05-10-2009 at 02:54 PM.. |

Feels like a movie I've seen before, but in a new flavor. Young dude meets old dude. Old dude has midlife crisis while young dude comes of age. The characters are all great, but there isn't anything here that you haven't seen in another movie.

Teeth-8/10
Summary: A clever, yet disturbing film just because a select few individuals, who happen to be male, get their junk removed by a vagina with teeth. The movie didn't go in detail about how or why this girl had teeth in another part of her body, but provides the audience with an idea of the possible cause of the mutation. |

Star Trek - 9/10
Well done, for what it is. Do not expect any substantial science fiction thematic dilemma. This is a standard action movie set in space, but with enough characterization depth to make it a satisfying trip to the theater. This movie will not engage you beyond the most basic sensory receptors, but it does a number on the receptors it does engage. Spoiler: I felt like they over-used the old Spock. Choke - 8/10 I've tried to write this short review about 3 times now, but the more I try to explain it, the more I feel like I should be rating it a 3 or a 4. Well, I'm giving it an 8 anyways. I liked it. The acting is bad. The directing and editing suck. The screenplay was a hack job. The soundtrack (or lack thereof) detracts more than it enhances. Still, Chuck Palahniuk's story shines through it all. This was just a vehicle to deliver the plot of a book in movie form. And I liked it.

Bottle Shock:
8/10. Excellent movie about the famous "Judgement of Paris" blind tasting that launched Napa Valley wines to the world. Alan Rickman does a stellar performance (as usual) as a British wine snob living in Paris, who travels to Napa expecting swill and discovers genius. Chris Pine plays hippie son to lawyer turned winemaker Bill Pullman, and Freddy Rodriguez turns in a great performance as a mexican worker at Pullman's Chateau Montelena vineyard with dreams of his own. the next night we rented (cause it was in the previews for Bottle Shock) Nobel Son which had some of the same cast as Bottle Shock, namely Alan Rickman as a incredibly egotistical (even for him) chemistry prof who wins the Nobel Prize, Bill Pullman as a detective with the barely concealed hots for Rickman's wife, and Eliza Dushku who played a bartender in Bottle Shock, but here plays an eccentric (and somewhat psycho) femme fatale/artist. I think IMDB summed the movie up better than I ever could: Quote:

Fanboys-9/10
This movie was delayed and the script was almost rewritten because the studio execs didn’t like the story line. Sadly, the movie was in and out of the theater within a week and then it vanished until today when it finally was released on DVD. The story is about five friends traveling to Lucas Ranch to steal the first Star Wars movie for their friend who has cancer. If you or anyone you know is a Star Wars fan, then you will definitely enjoy this movie because the main subject is about Star Wars. Not only that, but several actors that were in the original Star Wars movie make an appearance and provide us with amusing quotes that reference the three films made back in the 70’s-80s. And if you are a fan of Kristen Bell, then you will definitely like her roll in this film because not only is she a Star Wars fan girl, but plays a comic book nerd and wears the princess Leia slave costume at the end of the film. |
