Movie was very well done, great acting, kept my attention the whole time, liked how it ended up except for one part with morpheus (Fishburne) that I wished ended up different.

Very funny, refreshing humour. Different than the book series, but I like what they did with the story.
And Isla didn't disappoint.

The Reader 9/10 and Winslett gets a 10

I never thought I would be able to empathize with an SS guard. For that I give all credit to the amazing acting talent of Kate Winslett. The parallels that are drawn evoke an emotion so far from the predicted hate and shock so as to be almost an understanding of the situation as it occurred. Outstanding. But why did my local theater open this film with showings only at 1 and 4 in the afternoon, and no night showings. Those times are normally reserved for films on the way out. Such a pity that people prefer films that are thrown in their faces like green slime.

Best documentary about Strummer and the clash around. Only problem is that Julian Temple made it too much of a celebrity thing. Why the hell did I have to hear from Bono and Depp?

yeah, I think so. It's less music video and more interviews with people around him. As I said, the only parts that sucked were the random celeb interviews that had nothing to add, really.

I thought Winslett was great, but the movie was only a 6/10 for me. I hated Ralph Fiennes' character both as a man and as a boy. He was just such a spineless coward as a boy and a complete douchebag as an adult. And I have to say, if you were on trial for being a Nazi war criminal, quite possibly for your life, wouldn't illiteracy be the least shameful thing about you? What a travesty of justice that trial was, the other guards got off scot free, and she shouldered all the blame. The kid could have saved her, but didn't have the balls to speak up to the judges, or even to face her in jail before her sentencing.

We just saw The Wrestler, which was a 8/10 for us. Great movie and acting by Mickey Rourke and Marissa Tomei as two over the hill has beens trying to make their way in the world. Definately not a feel-good movie, really quite sad in places, especially where you see what Randy's life has come to: living in a broken down trailer, daughter hates him, out of touch with realty; the scene where he plays on his ancient Nintendo with the neighbour's kid while the kid talks about playing Call of Duty 4 really shows this last point. I don't know if it's the "return of Mickey Rourke" or not, I never found him to be all that much anyways, but it's a great character study.

Body of Lies--5/10

This movie did not feel fresh nor original at all. There were several shots that looked as if they were recycled from Blackhawk Down, and the plot featured several familiar spy movie tropes. Some parts were entertaining, some parts were gruesome...all in all, I'd pass. I'm being generous with the score because there are a couple moments that display the acting chops of both Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. Unfortunately, that's about all the movie had going for it as far as I was concerned.

My wife and I were interested in a few mindless rentals:

Wanted -- 4/10
I don't know how to differentiate really bad movies from other really bad movies. This movie looked like mindless fun. It was just mindless.

Transformers -- 3/10
This movie made Wanted look like high art. It was horrendous. Too many separate plots and Megan Fox was seriously miscast, but he CGI and sound was decent.

Blindness 8.5/10

I liked the idea of the film. Everyone in the city goes blind for unknown reasons, which are never explained, and we see how everyone handles the situation (not very well). Society falls apart and we are left watching a group of people united together as a small community supporting one another.

After the film was finished, I was left unsatisfied with the entire story because I wanted to know the source of what was causing people to be blind. But, after watching the special features, I found out the actors had to wear a blind fold and walk around attempting to get to their destination to make them aware of what it may be like to be blind. Also, during the actual shooting of the film, the actors had to wear contacts that blocked their vision, to make the movie a bit more realistic.

Okay cast.
The good:
Billy Crudup did about as good a job as I expected as CGI Manhattan and does a good job as Osterman.

Patrick Wilson was fantastic as Nite Owl II. I was actually really surprised at how much I liked him in the roll. Morgan and Haley are going to get the credit for whats good (as The Comedian and Rorschach respectively) but Wilson does a fantastic Nite Owl.

Jeffery Dean Morgan. Wow. He is awesomely vile as The Comedian.

Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach. What can I say? He IS Rorschach (and yes I've heard Alan Moore do Rorschach on YouTube and Haley was better).

The Meh:
Matthew Goode as Ozymandias. He was, well, okay. Nothing special but not Ozy enough except when it counted, you know, Spoiler: "35 minutes ago".

The Bad:
Malin Akerman. Well she's hot. That's about it. She just doesn't deliver the goods when stacked up beside the other actors in the film.

The film itself.
I loved the montage, what a fantastic way to do the backstory without tying up an hour of screen time for what is really not needed to get the story.
After that it's like watching a (okay edited down for length) moving version of the comic for the next hour or so. Blake's funeral? Wow. How fantastic was that? Mars? Oh my god.
Where there changes? Yeah there were. For the most part I was okay with them. Then there's the one big one but I wanted to give it the chance to not suck Spoiler: and to be honest it doesn't. The way they set up the Ozy/Manhatten power story-line worked for me. And "Dr Manhattan" attacking the super-powers? I was okay with him being subbed in for the Space squid.

This was a solid movie that kept a hold on you for the entire length (over 2.5 hours!) and it did so without pushing a plot line the whole way through. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. What a difficult task it was. I was disappointed with Ozy and I didn't think Sally Jupiter looked her age. That's really all though.. the rest.. spot on. I approved of all the storyline changes... they were necessary to make it into a movie.

Go see it!

Yes, you find out about 1/2 way through the film.

Ugh! A British film about a guy who regrets breaking up with his girlfriend and consequently suffers from insomnia. We couldn't get further than the first 30 minutes. The annoying voice over was too painful to endure.

Ditto, I've Loved You So Long was brilliant and I thought Cashback was a rather cute film. Nothing brilliant but it had that nice artsy and romantic feel to it like Eternal Sunshine and The Science of Sleep. Granted, I might have had harsher feelings towards the movie if I hadn't purchased it for really cheap.

Dirty Harry + Psycho 10/10
Virgin had them both for 5 bucks each and I couldn't resist. First time seeing both films since I was a kid - classics.

The Visitor 7/10
I knew it would be good but I didn't expect it to be that good, would've got a higher score if it were paced a bit better but I couldn't help but to care about the characters by the time it was over - great movie.

I was expecting a super dark film like the two newer Batman movies. It had a lot of dark humor which helped pace the 2.5 hours well. My favorite character was Nite Owl. He was good in costume and out of it. I thought Silk Spectre II did well but was a touch weak compared to Jeffery Dean Morgan. I have liked Jeffery Dean Morgan from Grey's Anatomy so at the beginning it was hard to watch him be such a completely vile character but it totally fit in the film.

The cinematography was excellent. It captured a lot of the feel of the graphic novel. I am interested to see what the director had to cut for time. It has been said there will be a 3.5 hour version. I want to see that one!

My favorite casino robbery film is Bob le flambeur directed by Jean Pierre Melville. It's an interesting film.

____

Last night we watched Rachel Getting Married starring Anne Hathaway and directed by Jonathan Demme. 7.5/10
I enjoyed the beginning of the film. I thought that Hathaway was good, but much of the hype may have been because she usually plays such "All-American" roles. I thought the movie dragged a bit. The wedding lasted forever and there was a lot of time spent on musicians playing at the wedding that I think could have been better spent further developing the characters.

Starring Clive Owen as a croupier with an unclear, perhaps criminal, past who wants to write a book. It was OK. I didn't think his character had much depth. That, and he was often dressed as Madonna in the 1980s (or maybe Michael Stipe).

It's the German film that won best foreign film at the Academy Awards in 2007. It's about Jews during WWII that were forced by the Nazis to make counterfeit British and American currency. Films about the holocaust seem to be overrepresented among Academy best foreign film nominees and winners. I enjoyed the film. The lead actor, Karl Markovics, was interesting as a criminal/victim/survivor. The film's tone was very different from many other holocaust films I have seen. I didn't like ending. (I don't like the endings of most films and books).

You're right. It does. There are a number of movie parties I would have loved to attend for their comedic value (like the party in American Pie), but this is the only movie party I can think of that just plain looked cool and enjoyable.

There is some great social commentary in this film and it's actually pretty funny. It gets better every time I see it.

I really enjoyed this movie: cleverly written, beautifully filmed (the opening scenes especially)...quite touching as well.

It was really interesting because it combined utter squalor and misery with incredible vibrancy and joy of living. The main character was also very compelling, in a quiet, understated way.

I also enjoyed the soundtrack.
