i think i'm in the same boat you are. i must have not been paying attention or something. the whole movie just went right over my head. i think i just wasn't interested in it at all. after 10 minutes my brain kinda just shut off. what was with the loud drumming anyway?

i think he imagined the car accident... he's not a particularly happy person, atleast in the beginning of the movie, and this probably demonstrates it.
the piano... I don't want to get all symbolic here, because I'm usually wrong. but it seems to bring some peace to his life... he seems to go to the piano when things get hectic, atleast that's the way i remember it. this probably represents something missing from his life, and I think that the girl he finds is very similar to the piano in terms of their impact on his life. sorry for rambling, im not sure if that made sense, it's kind of 2am for me. |

Before I watched it, I thought "Punch Drunk Love" was a pretty weird and meaningless title. Now I realise that it couldn't have been titled better! The whole film just felt so strange. Like a weird sensation. Like the first time in your life when you got a bit drunk. Visually this film was absolutely stunning. It just added so much to the tone of the film. The film is mad. It is absolutely crazy. People sometimes seem to do things for no particular reason. This is Barry's view of the world. To him, the world doesn't make sense. Then he means Lena, and suddenly nothing matters. "I've got so much strength in me right now, you wouldn't believe" I loved that line. Baary doing somehting he apparently has never done before: Standing up to someone. I loved the sound and music. It was scored so absolutely perfectly. The music absolutely complemented everything that was on the screen. Ok. I'm gonna stop right now. I'm just waffling, as I haven't had a chance to properly toss it over in my mind. I'm still a bit "tipsy" from the whole experience! But I adored this movie, I'm gonna make a copy of it, and watch it again soon. I'll post again in a few days, hopefully with a more coherent and well though out, structured reply!

Suffering myself from a bit of delusional depression in life right now I found myself getting the movie simply because Barry finally has something worth living for and he does everything he can to keep that happiness. Even if he does some weird stuff (the deleted scenes at the supermarket are great) he just is grasping on to anything to keep his depression from being overwhelming. Change in routine helps. I think that is why he picks up the piano.
When he snaps and starts yelling at his sister on the phone during the parade I stood up shouting, "Go Barry!" Finally he has the balls to fight back against the shit that is confining him. Damn good movie. Adam Sandler gives a totally underrated performance.

i absolutely loved that movie. the weirdness of the role adam sandler plays is awsome. i am glad to see him play a diffrent role from the comedy roles he plays.
i know what he is going through in the movie though, that is why i may like it so much.

the piano marks the beginning of goodness that comes into his life. The same day the piano arrives, he meets Lena. The movie basically runs through the idea that for every person, now matter how strange you are, there is someone out there for you. He takes the piano with him at the end to see her because its symbolic of them finding eachother. You remember the scene when he wants to bash her face in? She replies in the same fashion? They are meant for eachother. They understand and except eachother. Its a beautiful love story. The music was amazing and visual stimulation was incredible. I recommend the soundtrack. Its fantastic.

I had pretty much the same outlook when i saw the movie when it came out.. was in the throws of depression, had been wanting to see this for a while. very inspiring imo, someone being able to rise above his confinements and find something worth living for. as has been said before, sandler gives, in my mind, the best performance of his career to date
