Vulva/vaginal tear
Hello everyone,
I had a simple irritation to a new lotion I was using and a Dr. misdiagnosed me as having hpv. She put an acid over the entire vulva area to make the so called hpv go away. So now, because of her inexperience, I now have a small tear or crack in the vulva area, near the vaginal opening, right before you get to the perineal area. The acid made the skin tear! I go in with a simple product irritation and I come out with a permanent tear. About 3 months later, I realized it was the lotion that was making me irritated, I stopped using it and the irritation went away in a few days. But now I had a new problem, the tear that the unnecessary use of the acid caused. I remembered that when the skin was done peeling! (right after the acid treatment was done), I noticed that there was one spot, right out side the vaginal opening, that was bleeding. This is where the tear is now. So the acid must have made the skin crack since that specific area was just fine before the acid treatment. This small tear never seems to heal. I wont feel any pain until I have sexual intercourse with my husband. It then seems to reopen and it bleeds a little. And then it hurts for about a week. It's been two years since I got the tear, and it never heals. Ive tried estrogen creme, hydrocortisone cream, neosporen , nothing heals it. It just reopens after every time we have sex, or even if the area is just touched. I'm guessing it could be because that area is closed up, no air really gets to the tear. It's not healing like other cuts I have had on my arm, leg or other places. The only difference I can think of is that the area is always moist and no air reaches it. Does any one know of any way to heal this small tear in my skin? I am afraid that it will be like this my whole life. Another Dr. said that we can try to re-cut the tear and then stitch it up, but she said it might not work. I'm guessing that could also make it worse. Any one happen to have any advice : ( Jeanne Last edited by jeanne311; 04-03-2005 at 09:44 AM.. |

Go see a female gyno, at a different office from the first. Get another opinion besides the one about re-cutting it.
That's all from my mom, the Internal Medicine Doc.

You're sure these aren't fissures? I get tears that bleed when I have a yeast infection and hurt like hell during sex... have you ever been checked out for that?
Definitely see a female gyno, and no more acid.

malpractice suit? anyone? anyone?
I *would* totally talk to a lawyer about this, if nothing else than to keep your old doctor from doing this to someone else. She misdiagnosed your problem, and as a result you're having adverse side effects which are not going away, two years later. Keep her from putting someone else in the same position you're in right now! Seriously with something that bad that isnt healing, it might be good to go to a wound care center- those that specialize in the treatment of wounds that have difficulty healing. They have more expierence with wounds that don't heal than normal practitioners do, so you might get somewhere. I dunno bout this "cutting it open and stitching it" buisness cause it seems like the area that is tearing is forming a natural resistance to healing. Get thee to a specialist, forthwith!

Hi Sage, Thanks for the message. It's been on my mind to report her to prevent this from happening to any one else. I wonder if it is too late to file a malpractice suit. I know some times you only have one year to file a claim. I'll have to look into that.
Ive never heard of a wound care center. Do you happen to know of a good one that I can look up on the web. If not, I can just type in wound care center to see what comes up on the internet. Thanks for the idea. And also thank you for putting the idea in my head that if this has not healed, than maybe having stitches wont help, that might not heal either. Thanks, Jeanne |

One thought that came to my mind is that often women may get perineal tears in childbirth. The recommendation that I've heard is that they refrain from sex for about a month afterwards for things to heal. Have you tried Lanolin. It is great for healing. I used it on my nipples while I was nursing because it's not bad for you to injest small amounts. My nipples were constantly being irritated and the cracks in the reopened but the Lanolin kept the skin soft helped protect the cracks while they healed from the inside out.
Having said all that I strongly suggest as other's said here that you should go to another Dr. If it's too late to file a malpractice suit you could at least write a letter of complaint to the clinic that your previous Dr. works for. They will probably supervise her work a little closer because they'd rather avoid future malpractice suits I'm sure. It would be doing SOMETHING but not causing a long ordeal. Hope it gets better soon.

Hi Raenna, I actually did not have sex for over a year after the tear appeared, not until my wedding night. On my wedding night it bled, what a disappointment, I thought it would have been healed up by then. I'll look into the lanolin, thanks for that info. The doctor moved to a different state. I am going to find out where she is working and start writing a detailed letter. I want to send it to her office and also to some type of medical board, don't remember the name.
Thanks again, Jeanne |

I'm assuming you are in the US, if you want to file a complaint about her, contact your state medical board -- the number should be easily found in the phone book, they will probably interview you on the phone for a bit, then send you the appropriate forms that will need to be filled out.
When you contact the doctor, be sure to contact the administrator of the practice or hospital she is working in as well It's probably not too late for a malpractice suit, but remember doctors are human, and negligence is quite difficult to prove, but you might want to contact a lawyer that handles medical malpractice.

I'm not sure of the technical name for a wound care specialist, but you could try going down a list of doctors in the yellow pages for your area. Wound care centers specialize in wounds that don't heal, mostly due to other factors such as diabetes and supressed immune system from cancer or HIV or something like that. But, you could check them out, because this definitely sounds like something that is not healing. If you left it alone for a year and it didn't heal, then you have a MAJOR problem, not just some cut that won't go away. This is your body telling you that something is definitely wrong down there! Anyway, try a different OBGYN, and try the wound care center- and when they ask you how it happened tell them it was because of the acid, you think- perhaps if they know what your previous doctor did wrong they can know the best way to treat it! Good luck!

It could be a condition called lichen sclerosis -get yourself checked out by an ob/gyn who sees older women. The conditions is most common among post-memo women but any age can get it. Is the skin thin and white? It is often misdiagnosed by "green" docs as an STD.
