So The apartment has fleas....
AND SO DOES MY CAT! lol
I searched the forums, and found a few posts but i gave the problem some thought. They say the only way to stop fleas is to spray, and vacume for a week spray again and vacume for aweek. Well, home depot has a product called ZEP 1 Gal. Flea and Tick Spray. their description is Model FSH128 Kills adult fleas, larvae and flea eggs. Contains Nylar, an egg killer, that will eliminate flea eggs and larvae up to 7 months. This is what actually breaks their life cycle. For use on carpets, drapes and upholstered furniture. Trigger sprayer attached to a long hose for easy application. Internet # 112271 Catalog # 100036174 Now i was wondering if using this as a mix in a carpet shampo(er) (cant spell to well) and cleaned the carpet and the furniture with this, would this be better than just spraying it on the top? Now i realize that this would dilute the mixture, but i would also spray it ontop of the carpets ect, after i cleaned them. Anythoughts on this ? or direct me to the post that this was discussed in before, because i cannot find it.

They are right, pattycakes. Any fancy stuff you do will just cause more work, expense and an extended problem. So do the flea thing exactle as directed, and wait a bit to do the shampooing. My brother had an infestation that was so bad his cats were actually in danger of dying - hair falling out, fleas on everything. Follow directions

I'm assuming you want to shampoo to get rid of whatever is on the carpet from the last renter. I would shampoo the carpet, let dry completely and then spray the place down. Also talk to your vet to get a flea treatment for your cat. Over the counter products aren't as strong or effective in the long run. Atleast your cat will be protected in case of a reinfestation. Your vet can probably tell you the best way to rid your apartment of the pests.

I'd follow the directions as written. If you have any questions, there should be a contact number on the bottle if you need to ask any application questions.
Having been someone that had once lived in an apartment with lots of fleas (my roommate's two samoids), I know what you are going through. I remember we did the carpet spray, and bombed the house, and that seemed to do the trick. Also, remember that fleas don't live on the animal, they just use them for feeding. Good luck! |

This is a suggestion for what most people call cat fleas, which are quite tiny, very black, and difficult to kill with just smashing them. I had the same problem at another residence and this is what I did.
There is a powder, that you shake right into the carpet much like Carpet Fresh or whatnot, that you can buy from a farm type supply place. I can't remember the name of it at this moment, but I'll ask my mother what it's called as she has what's left of it. When you do anything, ensure that you do these things. Make sure you treat the cat, carpet, furniture, bedding of the cat, your bedding if she/he gets on it. You have to do this all in one go. This might be a expensive process, I'm not sure. I did this with a 2 br, 2 bath, lr, dr, kitchen. A very large trailer. This is the only way I've gotten rid of them. Bombing is only going to kill the currently hatched and grown fleas. It's not going to bother the eggs. I can state this for a fact from expirence myself. We sat off 3 of the bombs that was supposed to kill fleas, larvae, and eggs. We left the place for a week came back and was bombarded in bites from baby fleas that had hatched while we were gone. Vaccum all carpets, chairs, and everything necessary. Throw that vaccum bag in a plastic bag, seal shut and TOSS IT. Failure to do this part could end up with them coming back out of the vaccum. Bomb the place if you want to do that. Use this powder that is designed to work on all states of life of a flea. Leave it in the carpets for as long as possible. If I remember correct, the powder I used was recommended to be left there for 3 to 4 weeks. Also, take a broom to the carpet afterwards to push the powder deeper. Also, shake the powder and if you bought the spray, all inside of your chairs. In the sides of the chair, under cushions, any crevice you can find to put it in. They will be hiding in there as well. To ensure that you have gotten rid of fleas or see what room they're heavy in, you can make a flea light. Don't buy the funky ones out there. You can easily make your own. Take a shallow dish/bowland put as much water as you can on the floor of the affected area. Put a couple of drops of any type of dishwahing liquid. Afterwards, if you have a short desk lamp that will bend and move, hang it OVER the dish/bowl. If you don't have one, get a dining chair or something, and tie the lamp securely upside down over that. It needs to be at least 4 to 6 inches above the dish/bowl. You're gonna ask why the hell would you make a flea light? Why not just buy one? Fleas are attracted to light. The lights on the store bought ones do not burn brightly. You need at least a 40watt or better light bulb over this. I used a 75watt one using a desk lamp. They will jump towards the light and fall into the water. The water will drown them, but to insure that they don't jump out somehow, the dishwashing liquid will anchor them in there. I read up alot of this on the internet but modified it several times before I succeeded in removing the fleas. Your best bet is to make sure you can do this all in one go. Those things hatch quickly and will be waiting for fresh blood. They can live at least a couple of weeks, maybe up to a month, without new blood. Sorry for the long post, but fleas are hard to get rid of. It's a long vicious cycle if not done properly from the start. Suzz04 |

I had a major infestation in my house when I bought it - it made my (100% house) cats very sick.
I got the cats injected with a drug (the name of which totally escapes me) tat stays resident for 6 months and renders fleas infertile if they feed. I used permethrin based trigger spray on the carpets and bedding - at the time it was available freely in supermarkets, bt the law has canged in the past couple of years, and many products seem harder to get. I found these links. Safety Data Some Products You Can Buy University Of KY Guide to Flea Removal

Does the Zep flea killer have any phone numbers on the container that you can call. You could call and ask the manufacturer if the idea would work.
The other problem with putting it in your machine is that if it's sticky in any way it could really gum up the works in your shampooer. I would be wary of that. I would probably shampoo your carpet well and then while it's still wet soak it again with the Zep chemical. Later shampoo again because I personally could not imagine living in Flea killer chemicals being al that healthy. Got a Mom you can go stay with for a week??

I reccommend a good bug bombing, washing everything, and a couple of flea baths for the cat. They can be really hard buggers to kill, but the bombs seem to do it the quickest.

Flea bomb it. It worked for me. It kills everything. Even if you have ants, spiders, etc. Just read the directions. You can't be home for a while. Use Advantage. (It might be called something diffrent for cats) It kills fleas and their eggs. One application a month does the trick. Its expensive but worth it. It makes the animals skin toxic to fleas, so they don't live or want to go near a pet who has been treated.

I sprayed the carpe in almost all of the rooms, and i left powder under the couches, so hopefully this does the trick. the plan is when i finish to respray the floors and couches then bomb. the spray is supposed to have 6 month protection against the eggs... but who knows. its alot nicer in here already
