National "Do Not Call List"
I was forwarded this by a friend and I'm not sure if it's legit. Has anyone else heard anything about it?
https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx Thanks for any info. -T

It's legit and has been around for about 6 or 8 months now as I recall. There was a big "to do" over this. The telemarketers are obviously dead set against it.
I've registered all of my numbers with it and noticed a significant drop in unsolicited solicitations. I say register if you haven't already done so. ![]()

if this is something that has been around for 6 or 8 months now, then i must be all set, because i havent gotten a single call yet.
i smell conspiracy though...the govt "agrees" to hide phone numbers from telemarketers for 5 years as long as you put your name & number on a list? right..and what happens to all the people that registered for this protection for the first 5 years after the 5 years is up? can you put a price on that list...i am certain telemarketing companies did. and who has exclusive rights to it? man o man. if aint broke, and you dont have to give information to the government. dont fix it, and be all the better for it. |

it's legit. but it won't shield you from annoying calls anymore.
while my experience has been similar to kjroh's in that the frequency of these calls has dropped significantly, when my wife was working for Dish Network she told me how they were getting around it: establishing call centers in Canada and Mexico! Fucking A! at what point do these people get the hint? So that's legal loophole. Pass the word, the only reason this thing got passed in the first place was due to consumer complaint to Congress over being scammed and shit. So now it's time to raise ruckus about how they are circumventing the law. Politicians may be a lot of unsavory things, but they certaintly don't like to be punks.

Yikes...didn't know it was only for five years and then its up in the air!!
I've still received calls from local companies (like DSL and cable TV) offerering their services, and credit card companies (ones I have card with) offering upgrades and such. This is still legal, isn't it? |

I registered as soon as it came out and haven't had a single call from a telemarketer. I have noticed that the number of people calling asking to do surveys has almost tripled and I receive many more calls asking for donations.

It's more fun to run this counter script on telemarketers.

If you have had a recent relationship with the company, they are within their right's to continue to call you, unless you send them a letter asking them not to contact you. That was one of the ways to get around it. Also, political org.'s and non profit's are also exempt.

I moved about 5 months ago and got a new phone number at that time. I signed up on the list right after getting off the phone with the phone company. It's been 5 months and I'm still getting a lot of calls from telemarketers. Thank god for caller ID.

I know...I actually miss a very few telemarketting calls....just for the release of aggravation i could get from just hanging up or telling them something... i used to ask questions about like in that counter script and just keep them talking as they are generally on a calls per hour quota and if you slow them down too much, they'll get frustrated......

That script is good. I used to get lots of calls around dinner time & would do my amateur version. I'd keep cooking and maintain a very positive but slightly confused demeanor. "That sounds great, but could you repeat the part about..." My gf & I would compete, putting it on speaker phone to get the best chuckles. The marketers would almost always get disgusted and hang up before we had to shut things down.
After moving to Oregon I found a state do-not call list had been established. It was something like $15/yr to sign up! Luckily the national list came along the next year. It's made a big difference, almost eliminating our calls. |

I tried to get rid of all of the telemarketers. First we got caller Id and stopped answering calls that we didn't recognize. But then we still missed calls we would have taken, and the telemarketers would leave these cryptic messages that we had to erase to get to the real messages.
Then we tried that call block where you have to enter a code to get through, but they somehow found a way to get through anyway, and my friends could never remember the code. I tried the do not call list, but you can still be solicited by companies you work with. SO I took the easy route. I cancelled the home service all together, and just use my cell phone for all of the calls. I don't get any telemarketers on the cell. |

I just registered our cell phone numbers too. Somebody I know sent me an email about cell phone number listings becoming public information or something like that, so if you don't put your cell phone on the do not call list, they can call. To make matters worse, with some cell phone accounts you can incur cost when they call you.
