E-Huntin' We Will Go... in your jammies
I saw this as a news piece this morning on the Today Show.
There's a ranch in San Antonio, Texas that has a new kind of hunting, Via the internet. The Website is www.live-shot.com, and according to the owner of the site, you need to get a hunting permit first, then once that's been confirmed, you go this website, where there would be a rifle attached to some sort of webcam, and you can pan all around, and find your target and shoot the critter. They are stocking the ranch with all sorts of exotic animals, elk, some sort of sheep and a few other critters. Apparenly when you make your "kill" the ranch will send your kill to the taxiedermist for stuffing and if they can will send you the meat, if they legally can't send you the meat, then it gets donated to some charity. Would you do something like this? Is this really hunting? Discuss...

it's not really hunting at all. it's sounds more like a fps. i'm not really a big hunting fan to begin with so i'm not interested at all, but i do know of at least one guy who really loves hunting and i would bet anything he would never even consider that an option. i think it's kind of lame.

Nothing like desensitizing the experience of killing. In general, I don't have a problem with hunting, however if you are going to do it... for God sakes get off your ass and hunt.
Using this service, you might as well get a good hunting video game.

Having a rifle operated by any kind of remote control device is insanely dangerous. I saw this article earlier (on Fark I think) and I think this site is just getting rolling today, which leads me to belive it will be shut down by the end of the month.
Now is it really hunting? I guess so, as much as driving a remote control car is driving, but I would not be interested in doing it. For me, more than half the fun is the boom of my shotgun and the hard-to-describe feel of the recoil against my shoulder. Nope, not interested. I'd like to say that most real hunters will feel the same way as I do, but I have been surprised before.

I can see it.
Blam! luzer@coobicle1:"OMFGBTWLOL!!!111!! FSCKING LAG!!!" Blam! *Elm3rFuddownzj00bunny kills white_tailBukz0r with headshot from AWP"* luzer@coobicle1:"G#ddamn camping killthief! That was my kill!!!" So who gets to pick up all the animals shot in the ass due to lag? I'm sorry, but for me, the hunt is a lot more than the moment you pull the trigger. It's the planning, the stalk, the tracking and the companionship with fellow hunters. There's also something about the primal nature of it too, as I've only killed what I intended to use or eat. More times than not you end up going home empty handed, tired and dirty, but you've spent a day in the outdoors doing something moderatlely active and feeling better for it. That's hunting. Pfft that takes all the fun and effort out of hunting. Probably wont' do good...the people that have money to afford this sort of thing like the actually kill the animal themselves. And yes that does sound dangerous.

What about the guy picking up the kills? Won't he be walking around the killing field while someone else is "hunting"? That has potential for bad things to happen. It probably would feel like a first person shooter. I know if I just finished playing a session of Doom3 and then went to this site and saw some hillbilly walking around carrying a dead body, my trigger happy mouse finger would probably frag him out of reflex.
Come to think of it, that kinda sounds like a good idea!

Anyone ever read the short story, The Most Dangerous Game? Now that'd make a sport of it... The poor animal doesn't realize he's being watched, and can't hear the footsteps of the great white hunter coming up behind him... Man, on the otherhand, would be aware that he's on camera and being watched and could possibly be shot... (Ok, use paintballs if you must)

Seems like it takes the entire purpose out of hunting - the thrill of stalking, pitting yourself against nature, etc. I don't care for hunting myself, but having grown up in northern Minnesota with a passel o' gun-toting relatives, there's something about the cameraderie and the effort that is just lacking here. Might as well be playing Halo.
Kind of off-topic, ratbastid and I came up with the idea of setting up a cat-squirting cam with an X-10 camera and a supersoaker so we could monitor our cats' actions and squirt them while we weren't home. Squirting them in person just makes them think "ah, if I get up on the counter when the big hairless cats are here, I get wet....I'll just wait till they're gone!" But if we could shoot them anytime, it'd be real Hand of God stuff. We even thought jokingly about setting up a website - squirtmycat.com - and charging to let people man the gun for a while, but we figured we'd end up with very wet, very neurotic cats.

I am a hunter. This ain't hunting. I don't know what it is...but it aint huntin'. As soon as the full ridiculousness of this all finally sets in...I'm sure that I'll be much more incredulous, but for now...all I can do is sit back with a stupid (read stupidER) look on my face, and shake my head. I also have little use for "hunters" that use feeders and bait. That's not hunting, either. That's glorified trapping.

Sounds like those lame ass hunting games. No, if I'm going to hunt, I will be full camo, carrying my rifle, and going for three days without showering. None of this wussy E-hunting crap.
male, what are these feeders you speak of? Is this on gaming ranches or something? Last edited by Suave; 11-18-2004 at 10:49 AM.. |

It aint hunting. Hunting involves the game of patience and waiting for your target to arrive. When you spot the target, you look along the target sighting and you'll enjoy the feeling of the rifle smacking you through its butt right into your shoulder. The online "hunting" aint hunting in any way. It's just another excuse for people to go online and do something stupid.

That's a great idea. I'd love to have one of those set ups in my apartment right now. I know my cat is up to something she shouldn't be up to and if I could shoot her with water without me being around... perfect. Great idea!

Hehe, thanks guys.
They could probably make a mint if they set these things up on highrise buildings overlooking street intersections and you pay $5 for 10 paintball shots to take a pop at drivers who gridlock or talk on their mobile phones. Lurkette, it'd be fun till some guy decided he didn't like the colour of your toaster either and you came home to see the firebrigade washing the ash from your house off their clothes. |

As a hunter, this absolutely disgusts me. My main questions, what happens when someone wounds an animal? The use of the gun is slow, and hardly that accurate.
I'm going to file this under 'Bad Idea'.

I saw this on another site as well. However, has anyone thought this might be an elaborate hoax? I remember around 1 year ago there was a big hubbub over some sight called Hunting for Bambi, which allowed people to arrange to "hunt" naked women with paintball guns. They faked a couple of shots and people started flipping out, until it turned out fake. I mean, look at how many times Joey Skaggs has faked people out, this seems like more of the same. I mean, the liablility insurance for something like this would be astronomical, it would probably cost $10,000 per shot.

Well, even with a telephoto sight you still have to watch what is on the other side of your target....and in the flat lands of Texas, that can be one hell of a long way off....and down here it could end up in Mexico...
I can see it now "yea, I pulled the trigger that killed that mexican, but I was really setting in Iowa".. |
