Anyone know anything about lucid dreaming? Have you experienced it?
Hi...I want to know more about lucid dreaming from you ppl...all I know about it is that you are aware that you are sleeping and you can control things around you...how do you do it? Is it a skill or something you practice at? Has anyone here ever had this experience before? I think I have had it twice but it didn't last long...it was a LOOONG time ago tho

Yes, there was a long-running thread in the previous iteration of TFP, as well.
Here's an entry from my journal: Lucid Flight The lucid dream I had this week was just the best. I discovered myself flying through a vast interior scene with many chambers and caverns. I was holding a ribbon-type thing- similar to the long ribbons employed by synchronized teams of Olympic gymnasts. The ribbon was slung behind my back and as I held the ends out in front of me I could sort of sit back and relax and be propelled forward. The ends of the ribbon vibrated in tight spirals as if they were a set of propellers. Indoors, they had a cutting effect, like chain saws, on anything they touched. So I had to maneuver myself above the floors to keep them from ripping apart. I decided to find a way to exit and get outdoors. As I executed these maneuvers it was clear this was a full-fledged flying device and I began to soar above the trees. I immediately realized I was dreaming and that I could do the most impossible things without danger to myself. I sought out a hurricane over the ocean and entered the eye wall for the thrill, ride, and flight of my life. The wind howled and the rain flew sideways. And I was able to maintain awareness that I was dreaming for the duration of the dream.

I have a question... in one of the previously mentioned threads they differentiate between having control over a dream and having a lucid dream. What is actually the difference between the two?
This is a subject that has always facinated me and I would like to learn more about. Yesterday, when I found this thread I also found a link to a FAQ on lucidity.com that listed a few "reality tests" Last night, while sleeping I began to dream and did a reality test against my watch. I looked at it once and it wasn't moving. I looked at it again a few seconds later and it still hadn't moved. I was able to move it change time by my will. After that I realized I was dreaming. Once I realized it I tried hovering above the ground and was able to do it. I flew around a bit and then "transported" myself throughout a few locations within the town I was in. If I was able to control my surroundings... doesn't that classify as a lucid dream? The only reason I doubt this is that everybody says how long it takes to learn to lucid dream and how difficult it was. The first time I tried it I was able to fly and transport myself to different locations, Which has been said are a few of the hardest things to do. I find it hard to believe that it worked that well on the first try. As a side note... I did finish off a case of beer (I had 7 or 8) myself last night within a couple hours of going to bed. |

There are levels of lucidity.
The initial level that qualifies it as "lucid" denotes the fact that one is aware one is dreaming at some point during the course of the dream. At first, it is often a fleeting awareness. With practice, one can keep hold of that awareness through entire dreams and finally come to a point where one has control over the content and direction of the dream. .... see: http://www.lucidity.com/ This book is a pretty good introduction to the subject: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/IS...460219-0335321

Sometimes I dream I'm being chased by a monster or something, but then it turns round and I start attacking it, even though my arms wont swing right I imagine me beating it and it seems to recoil from the blows that come from my will. I dont know if this is lucidity or not. Also, when something bad happens in my dreams, I feel like I can wake myself up if I scream loud enough (in the dream) but sometimes I cant find my voice...

During one of my re-occuring dreams (I haven't had one recently, they happened mostly when I was younger), and one of my more odd dreams, I was able to take control.
The town I live in is overrun by you name it, goblins, giants, aliens, little short things with sharp weapons... So I of course go back to rescue my family and get trapped in the basement running away from the aforementioned little short things with sharp weapons. After panicking and running around the basement trying to get away I get cornered and have no way left to escape. I remember thinking in the dream, "Oh shit, I'm gonna die" so I decided (while sleeping) to pause it so I wouldn't. So I realized I was dreaming, stopped the dream, and woke up. |

In a lot of my dreams, I know that I'm dreaming. Usually I'm at school, in class. Something good/bad will happen. The dream progresses, then all of a sudden I'm like "Oh shit! It's a dream!" Usually the dream ends soon afterwards
I remember one dream that I could control when I was younger. I could fly by running really fast. |

I guess you could say I've had experiences similar to lucid dreaming, being able to move as I like. Probably not on the same level as others, or that the site describes. However, I very rarely remember my dreams when I wake up so I'm not really too sure how often it occurs.

I've had a few dreams like Leefy has had. I'll be fighting something that I would have no business beating up but I somehow "win". And there are times in my dream where I can't talk or am not talking well and I will myself to speak...is that lucid dreaming?

I dream quite rarelly... but when I do they are quite often 'lucid' dreams. I am aware that it's a dream and I can generally control what happens, at times it seems like I'm playing my own private computer game. You also seem to be able to feel at times as well as see and hear.
I notice they generally occour when I am really tired, been studying/working hard and generally just feel exhausted. |

I've only had one lucid dream that I can remember but it was seriously awesome. I've had many "close-to-lucid" dreams when I know I'm dreaming towards the end, but that usually occurs 5 seconds before I wake up. The major one I mentioned lasted a long time, however.
I was about 13 at the time. I remember falling asleep and having a dream about a bunch of kids sitting inside a crashed tractor trailer (or something like that). The kids were talking to me about something (I can't remember what) but then something told me that I was dreaming. I realized that I was sitting next to a bunch of imaginary people in an imaginary world. I told the kids, "You're not real. You're in my dreams and this is all imagined by me." The kids stared at me with a horrific look in their eyes. They said, "it doesn't matter. We're here right now, so we really exist." I told them that I could make them disappear anytime and that they didn't really exist. They got sort of upset. After arguing for a few more minutes, I said I was sorry that I had to wake up because they'd be gone. I waved bye, and right then, I woke up in real life. It was the weirdest dream I've ever had. -Lasereth

i have been curious about this for a while--what practices are associated with lucid dreaming? in other words, what exactly can you do to further/develop this possibility?
