Fark on Your Radio Station?
I am noticing something more and more. I first thought it was a big joke, but now I realize it's real:
All the radio stations around here read Fark and talk about the stories EVERY DAY. The "news" portion of every radio show, no matter which one, is using something I read on Fark the day before. They need to get their own material, or at least spice it up a little bit. And I'm not saying stuff like "Lakers lose a basketball game." I'm saying they are talking about stuff like "man dies in a freak potato gun accident." There's only one way they found that........Fark. They even sometimes use the same headlines that the Farkers thought up! Anyone notice this with the radio stations in your area?

There are some radio stations here that could be doing that. I've never visited Fark so I have no idea if they are using their stories.
Sounds like what you're describing though.

eh. I'm not surprised, really.
A bunch of sad, syndicated, pre-packaged crapola. I remember when FM stations were the cool thing for rock and roll. Now they're all playlist crap generators. Another good thing exploited to death. Farking clear channel. ;-) I only listen to the radio in the car now. I listen to XM radio at work on my shiny new XM PCR. XM Radio rocks.

I've definately noticed this as well, and I'm positive the producers of these shows are reading Fark for ideas.
The only place I've ever really heard someone credit Fark is Jeff Marek who is a host on Mojo Radio.

Yeah, I have noticed this before, and it is really tragic when their entire program is things I heard on Fark the day before. I have never heard a Fark credit either ,which I think is pretty shitty on the part of the radio station.

Ive actually noticed that for awhile.. Pretty sad really, but then again.. The people who populate Fark the most are on the Internet ALL THE TIME so they get to the news stories pretty quickly..
bad when Drew Curtis scoops CNN

I haven't noticed that at all. The local radio station I listen to on the way to work (The Current). Then again, it isn't a clear channel station. ;-) (top show in the market for its slot tho! Show starts at 8:37 EST, you can listen at work if interested.)

Yeah, every single station I listen to (and many TV channels) talk about FARK headlines everyday, never mentioning where they found the story (FARK). It's really annoying. Sometimes I wanna call the station and say, "you know, some people have already heard this story...the least you can do is admit you ripped it off of FARK!"

Yup one of my local radio stations does that. Every morning at 7:20 we get the "news of the strange and unusual". Every story is straight off of FARK. No mention of it from the DJ.
I overheard some of my co-workers talking about the weird stuff on that morning show and one of them actually said "I wonder how he gets those stories of weird people. He must have some great news connections at the radio station". I laughed out loud at him. Great connection? yes. It's called an internet connection. dumbass //rolls eyes

Not defending radio or anything, but there are a couple of Fark clones out there, and it seems like every web portal/news website (Yahoo, newspaper sites, etc.) now has odd news compilations. Fark's got some good stuff, though. I'm sure the site's owner is flattered it's being used.

Yeah, I hear you, and I hear the rip offs.
The parts that always make me chuckle is that the stories are 99.99% always one day behind. Usually they do rip of the fark tagline, but then credit the original news source where Fark got it from. I can see crediting the original. I mean, Fark just collects the articles, they don't write them. However, if you're gonna rip of the tags Fark posts the articles with you should credit Fark. In fact, if you're going to use Fark as your own source (and apparently ONLY source) of fun news credit should really be given.

I hate the radio morning shows...
Actually I hate the radio period.... "ok, lets get back to the music...that you just heard 15 minutes ago... Here's the new one from Beyonce...." I love satellite radio....that and my CD's are the only things, I'll listen to..

You'd have to check the demographics, but I'd venture to guess that most of the people who listen to those morning shows have never even heard of Fark.

I was listening to Bob and Tom the other day and they had Drew Curtis on and they were talking about this exact same thing. Drew said he thinks that we no longer really have any real news. The headlines just get passed around between all the syndicates and news stations and nobody actually seems to have a real story. Not to mention that nobody is doing any fact checking, which is what Drew mentioned is happening with some stations pulling stories from Fark.com since they don't regulate their stories and intentionally slip in stupid fake stories.

I too have noticed this for quite some time. Even the local 6 o'clock news has covered a Fark story or two. I think even the Tonight Show has been guilty of it.

The local stations where I live just flick through the local paper and read out the news like they researched it themselves . . . no mention of the source . . . . . but when you get the paper and read through it you know half of it verbatim

sorry for bumping this one, but fark had a satirical story a couple weeks ago on the indiana congressman who was lobbying to ban I-69 highway due to the innuendo behind it.
Like a bunch of lamers, the local radio station, 92.3, ripped it off and passed it as the truth. meh. [been listening to more college radio and npr recently.] |

Our campus newspaper has a quick column under world news where they stick funny/odd stories. All of these articles were on fark the week before. Coincidence? Maybe.. nah.

These DJs may be hashing out shit from Fark, but there are a lot of other sources for odd news stories. And just how much credit does Fark deserve? Unless I'm mistaken, Fark doesn't write these news stories and they are simply submitted by Fark readers to an open Internet medium.
Edit: And I just saw a story on Fark that was on another board I read two days ago... Fark is a great site and all, but there are other ways for these links to circulate.

I've actually thought the same thing myself a couple of times. I listen to Lex and Terry everymorning (~semi national audience I think). Some of the news articles they talk about are sitting right there in the Fark queue.
Alot of blogs kind of rape and pillage from each other so It could be from quite a number of other sources but funny you should mention it. |

I don't think Carrot Top is a fair comparison. Since he is a comedian(supposedly) that leads me to believe that you are refering to the humorous tags assigned to stories. The tags aren't made up by the same person and some of them are hilarious (even if it is only one or two a day).
This is just another reason to never turn on shitty corporate radio stations anyways; like there aren't enough already. One of the things I am most thankful of my father for is bombarding me with NPR from a young age. I always hated it until I listened once or twice. And someone mentioned Paul Harvey who is undoubtedly an inspiration for FARK in the first place.

yeah, the national radio station here in SA does it too. Or its at least the main source. occasionally rip the headlines too. but how do you scoop fark?? good radio station with high quality djs, even if they do play the same songs bout 4 times a day. but then again, thats better than mtv. 5fm.co.za, u can give em a listen on streaming audio and they almost always give a shout out to ppl listening over streaming who email em.

The best part about news reporters jacking headlines from Fark, is when an organization like CNN or MSNBC takes an article from Fark that is clearly labeled as a satire and reports it as actual news. Then quietly a few days later you can see a nice, small retraction on their website in a really hard to find place. Don't you just love the journalistic integrity practiced by today's 24 hour cable news regime that they resort to ripping off semi-serious meta-news sites for their scoops? These are the same people that loft soft balls at the White House because they fear losing their precious seat in the media room more than the apocolypse we're slowly being dragged into.

I was referring to Fark as the semi-serious site. And something like that happened very recently where MSNBC took a Fark headline almost verbatim and reported it as news (the source was some rediculously unfunny satire). The stealing comes in the form of not even having the decency to make their own headlines up. I can't cite exactly what the news story was. Anyone who knows out there that can help me out?
