Cheap Car Insurance
Ok here's the deal. I just moved across the country by myself (no other vehicles) and can't stay on my parents insurance any longer.
I have a clean driving record up to 3 yrs, 1 mth ago. Any more before June 2000, it's not pretty (1 speeding ticket, 1 wreck and a failure to yield ticket due to the car accident - my fault). For liability ONLY, the cheapest quote I've found for my 1996 Mazda is $950 for 6 months. That quote, by State Farm, was with a good student discount, no strikes on my record and with my having done all my previous insurance with them. I can't afford to be insured, but I also can't afford NOT to be insured, as I have to have my AZ's insurance to get AZ license plates (which I have to do by the end of the month or the title transfer expires). Not to mention my new job that I start in a week requires me to have an AZ license.... Complicated, no? Anyways, what are some alternatives? Geico was more. Join AAA and get a quote from them, or keep your car registered in the state you are from and buy the ins there. You can do this if you list that as you main residence if you own property there or you are a student going to school in AZ.
Plan B: Have your parents put the car in their name in the state you are from and list you as a driver on the insurance policy. Good luck

I've been driving, clean record (not so much as a speeding ticket) for 5 years now, I own a 92 Acura Integra - I pay 430$ every 6 months (only partial coverage, not total, though).
However, I use USAA - so you're probably out of luck there. Most places I've seen do charge about the rates that you listed above. Check State Farm and Progressive - I've heard some good things about them, but don't have any firsthand experience.

Have you ever considered getting rid of your car? My wife and I don't have a car. We ride our bikes or take public transportation. Just imagine the uses you could find with all the money you are saving on car payments and insurance.

Like someone said above, there is no such thing as cheap car insurance when you are young. I'm paying what they charge you for 6 months to cover 2 cars (and my wife and I as drivers) for a whole year. I'm with USAA as well, but that is generally not available to the general public. Once you find a couple of good quotes, find out how you can reduce it. There are sometimes discounts for taking things such as a defensive driving course, etc.

It's true that there's no such thing as cheap insurance, but I lived in Arizona for 20 years, and it's cheaper there than a lot of other states - I'm paying a helluva lot more here than I did in Arizona.
Have you tried Independent Agents? They have a variety of companies from which to search. Of course, I don't know how feasible it is, but if you moved out of Maricopa County, you could probably save a bunch (it would save you on emissions tests, too) - of course, your daily commute would eat up any savings. Other than that, turn 25 and get married - that always works.

A little note regarding car insurance for ALL:
If you are with one of these independents a couple of things you must ask and NOT DO!! You should not have to pay a brokers fee each time you renew your policy. You may have to pay this fee when you first sign with the company. You should not have to pay a policy fee each time your policy changes such as adding a car or removing one to replace the other. These are fees that independents and some big boys charge you to put a few extra dollars in their pockets. This is perfectly legal and most people keep paying it over and over like my buddy has been doing. He just bought a car from me and we were sitting waiting for the proof of insurance to be faxed, when it came across the fax with the new car added so did these fees: Broker fee: $75.00 Change in policy fee:$125.00 Heres the best one, Paperwork and transaction fee:$20.00 LMFAO I looked at his policy and the fees and asked him how long he's been paying these fees? He told me every six months he pays the broker and the new policy fee...........WTF!! If you sign a policy with a company the only thing you should be paying each renewel is the premium. Anyhoo, I hooked him up with my guy and he was actually paying $250.00 more then he should have been paying each six months. Car insurance is a necessary evil that we must all have and there are alot of SNAKES out there in the business that prey on people that are not to eduacted. Ask questions about your policy and make sure you are only paying for what you need. If you have a car that offers free roadside assitance.......you don't need to be paying for towing in your policy. Just thought this would help some of you out there

Awesome, you guys!!
For now, I'm keeping my car registered back home bc I just can't afford that. When they figure out that I'm no longer a student (they said it'd be fine for the remainder of the year and then they can drop me or I need to go back to school a bit), I'll go with Keysersoze's Plan B. Quote:
