CANADA: Are you playing hockey?
This is one of those threads where you are never sure where to post it.
In the old days of the Canada board I probably would have posted it there but even that would have left out some people. I did not want to post it on the Sports board becuase that thread is very much centered aroudn the topic of sports and this is more a general question meant for others in addition to those on the Sports board. Are you playing hockey this season? I did not grow up polaying Hockey - something quite out of the ordinary for a Canadian. I played about a handful of times until CEGEP (school after high school and before university) where I took an intensive Hockey course as a gym class. We played and practiced for 3 hours every Wednesday morning. Then in University, for 2 out of the 3 years, I played in the C division of the Intramural league. Since University - about 10 years - I played only a handful of times until the begining of this past summer. A bunch of friends decided that we were going to get a weekly game together. We don't play in a league but we get enough guys together to have a full game - goalies, refs, and all. When we started at the begining of the summer there were some of us who had never really played, there were those that had not played in a long time and there were regular players. Since the summer a lot of us have gratly improved. I am glad that I am playing Hockey. Are you playing Hockey?

I played Hockey when I was a kid. I was a fast skater but not a great player.
I've played a few games of Shinny over the past few years (there is an outdoor rink near my house in Toronto). I understand that there is a pick up game here but I haven't checked it out. I don't know if I could even find a hockey stick or decent skates here.

i played growing up, up until level Junior "c" and a bit of "b". i also played roller hockey in the states for a semi-pro team but don't play that often now that i am older.
my buddies rent the ice all the time but it is either really early in the morning and or late at night and i am just too lazy now! do play some road hockey and the odd pick up game now but have not interest. have not watched a game on tv either since the strike..... considering i grew up with season tickets to the red wings (detroit was closer for us) and watched nearly every game on tv since i was 5 hockey has been ruin for me by bettman (sorry for mini thread jack). |

as a kid... a fair amount. But I have to admit that I got bitten by the bug. My youngest son is in Atom, in the East York Hockey Association. The amount of fun he was/is having swayed me to pick it up again. I spent about $60 last year to register the Adult Hockey programme in the Parks & Rec Fun Guide (toronto) which is a steal for 9 hourly sessions. Oh yes, I also dropped a bundle on new equipment.
Well, now I am on the ice close to 4 x per week, counting shinny with my boys, pleasure skating and 2 games per week for myself - one being the Parks & Rec, the other an early morning game every Wednesday with the folks from work. ahhh... just talking about it makes me want to get out there now... |

Played hockey from 4 to 21, from bumble bee as they used to call it, Jr. A, Jr. B, to the UHL. Haven't played since I left the UHL 9 years ago, don't miss the game at all, it damaged my body too much for the little reward I got from playing, dislocated shoulders 9 times, now they pop out if they are moved the wrong way, nope no hockey for this guy again......ever.

played hockey for two years when I was really young. Hated it... playing it that is.
I'm a huge hockey FAN, but I'm currently on strike from supporting the Canucks until they get rid of Naslund. Habs for life though, I cheer for them no matter what.

I never played organized Hockey as a kid because I was too lazy to get up at 5am and skate laps and jump over pylons. It seemed to much like a punishment.
I do miss playing road hockey though.

I am so surprised that there are not more people playing (now).
I guess I just assumed more people played and that I am the odd one out since I just picked it up again. If you don't play, do you ever long to pick it up again or wonder why you don't play anymore? Is it because you don't want to deal with all the league stuff or you just want to play every once in a while so you don't want to commit to a team? This is why it is just a bunch of friends and other people we know for us. Alot of us can't make it every week so we have about 40 people on a list and we hope to get about 20 each week. It has been workign out so far.

i basically stopped playing pick up games because there always seems to be one guy that acts like a idiot. I remember playing in a sunday night game as a fill in for a friend who called me and need another player, church league too!
anyway this one guy thought he was playing in an NHL game that actually mattered and not a pick up game with no contact. So i was in corner digging out the puck and he came flying in and smoked me....again no contact league. After he got up, yes his skills were so good that he fell too after the check he gets up and skates away. well i can't have any of that so i catch up beside him and ask him if this is a contact game as i must be confused. and he calls me a pussy and says "what can't take a hit"....grrrr... I waited for later in the game and just lined him up, you know when you hit someone and it feels so good, like a great golf shot! He freaked out! "what are you doing arsehole..."...etc i reminded him what he told me, he practically cried he was so upset. I hate that, you can dish it but can't take it..... i've had similar incidents over the years, a slash here, a high stick there...etc like dude, we paid to play not the other way around! |

That and it's damaged my body too much, arthritis galore, shoulders that won't stay in place, sore knees, bad ankles, and I'm only 30. I tried a pick up game about 3 or 4 years ago with my dad, it didn't go well, I was winded and couldn't do most of the things I once could so I didn't enjoy it at all.

My boyfriend plays hockey and no, he's not Canadian. I'm going to watch him play this weekend. It will be the first hockey game I've ever seen. I'm a little worried though, it seems like a rough sport. Judging by silent_jay's post, the game may do more harm than good.

I seriously doubt that this guy was/is Canadian. Sounds like a poser to me. Quote:
enjoy the game! where do you live, what league is he playing in? I wouldn't worry too much about the silent_jay's post, It sounds like he was involved in some relatively elite leagues for quite a long time. Generally it's a fun game, at least at the level that I play at. Yes Sticky, I play and enjoy it! Last edited by Leto; 01-24-2008 at 06:37 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

You do, however, often get one idiot that thinks he is playing in the Stanley Cup finals when it is just shinny.
Most of the guys we are playing with now are coming back every week. They know the kind of game they are getting. We are competitive but we all realize that we are out there to get exercise and have fun. I think that the biggest factor in making everyone's good attitude possible in our game is that we had people from all levels. The guys who are at the higher levels are going to be playing with guys at lower levels. When you know it is going to be that way it changes your outlook - you have fun with it. Conversly, the guys at lower levels get to do things that they would not normally be able to do - like score - becuase they are playing someone who can pass to them at the perfect moment.

Play It Again Sports is probably the best bet for equiptment, the only thing I reccommend is buying your skates new so they can mould to your ankles and won't hurt when you play.
