My PSP was stolen
(blog style post, but i needed to get this all out)
Here's the thing about modern day electronics and gadgets - many times they're used and customized so much, they become a natural extension of their owners. My PSP, for example, held the music that described my life, the podcasts that informed me, and the photos of all the good times. (oh yeah, the thing plays games too) Needless to say, my PSP was an extension of me. So I was quite pissed when I discovered at work today that someone had stolen my PSP. I placed the gadget in a cubby hold next to the register; the same place I always put the thing when I work. But this bastard reached over, somehow without us noticing, and took my PSP (and some credit card slips/reciepts aparentally). After taking out my anger on the bathroom door (my knuckles are bruised and the door barely shuts anymore) I called to the couple of GameStops near ours, and as it turns out, our handy thief, lets call him Smith, had tried to trade in my beloved PSP across the street. He couldn't do so without the charger, so Smith just traded in the copy of Lumines that was inside. In doing so, under trade-in regulations, the store had to collect his personal information. So they had his supposed name, address, and phone number. When getting this information from them, my manager noticed that Smith had stopped in earlier at MY store. The first name matched, the last name differed, and the phone number differed, however the street address matched. At this point, I don't know exactly what to do. I'll be calling the local GameStop/EBs tomorrow morning, looking for beloved PSP PP117563436 and her 1gb memory stick duo. I may just call the police, but I have a feeling that would accomplish little... In all honesty I have little hope in recovering my PSP. I just want some sort of justice, let this asshole know that what he has done is wrong. ... As my friend Eric pointed out, this may be the fire that needs to be lit under my ass. I've increasingly become sick and tired of working at the mall, at GameStop. I'm tired of the ungrateful people. I'm tired of doing good things at work, and not recieving any extra compensation for it. I'm tired of seeing thieves making more money there than me. I'm expecting a call back from Best Buy within a day or two - and while that may not be a huge jump up from GameStop, it will at least get me out of the mall, and also give me more hours, and more money. If that doesn't work out, the co-op fair at my school comes up Thursday as well. Now I'm sure as hell going to try to get a job or internship there now too. It's just time for a change. Now about justice... Edit: More advice from Eric, it inspires me a bit... remember the stolen Sidekick story over the summer?

I'm sorry to hear your PSP was stolen.
Too bad you didn't catch the bastard while he was trying to steal the phone. I'm sure it would've been within your rights to staple the fuck out of his hand. Good luck with Best Buy. Be a nice step up. Maybe you'll get lucky and work the security counter at Best Buy and bust a few thieves. |

Why is it that the police can do nothing? Someone stole your personal property as well as very sensitive information in a store that I'm assuming has a surveillance system installed. Have the tapes been checked?
I doubt the matching addresses are coincidental - seems rather typical of the casual (careless) thief. If you really want your PSP back then you should exhaust every option available to you. The PSP, 1 gig stick, and copy of Lumines amount to more than $300 - I'm not sure about where you live but here a theft of at least that amount constitutes a felony charge. This is no light theft - this guy should be in jail.

Contact the police, fight this, they get paid to help you. You should have called imidiatly, the thief may have left prints as he was feeling around in the cubby. Is there anything special about your PSP that makes it identifiable as yours?
for the future mark all expensive things in 2 places, my graphing calculator is marked in one obvious place, the back, and on the inside of the case, any one can steal it and scratch my name off the out side, but it take allot of work to get inside, I doubt they will check inside of it.

don't you have cameras at the registers that cover the space where your PSP was?

I hate to be the meanie in this one but why bring the PSP to work? Especially putting it someplace where somebody could jack it?
Putting it in your purse, bag, pocket, jacket pocket, etc would've provided better concealment than a cubby hold right next to a register that customers and coworkers could see.

I work at GameStop, and the PSP is handy when it's quiet and background music is needed, or when a customer asks about it.
The great thing about my GameStop in the mall - no cameras, inside the store, or pointed at our store from inside the mall! I have the serial number, and I have identifiable marks inside the battery compartment. I'll stop by the city's PD after class today, I do believe. My faith, honestly, is low in finding and recovering the system, however any little bit of justice will help. I can describe that system in my sleep (and last night I might have) A few friends of mine suggested doing evil things, since I know the persons address, either that, or actually go to the house. Well as much as I'd like to do that, it's not exactly an option, since it's in the ass-crack of Detroit.

The less you do, the lower the chance you'll recover the PSP.

Yeah you have the serial number and identifiable marks. You should call the police, and then after fileing the report (prob done online.)
Continue your own investigation. If you find your psp, I think you can get it back from who ever was unfortunate enough to buy it.

This is an ironic thread. My best bud got his PSP stolen at work yesterday as well. We work on an assembly line, and during our shift he put the psp in a desk drawer thats usually safe, everyone stores there cells and stuff there cause the only people that have access to it throughout the shift are teamleaders and offline(relief person) so if it dissapears theres very few people to search. Well, he managed to forget about it and left it there during the day, when we got back in last night it was gone. Hadn't been turned in anywhere, and noone seemed to know anything about it. Some people should just be shot, seriosly.

I had a digital camera stolen from the mailroom of a school where I used to work. The sad part here is that this is actually the expected outcome. If you leave a small, valuable object unattended in a public place, it will usually be stolen. If you park a bike without locking it adequately, you expect it to be stolen quickly.
We live with the expectation of dishonesty. Gilda
