Is it most common for handguns to be stored in gloveboxs? Or do people setup custom holsters/storage locations for guns in their cars. Or is it just required by law (in some states) to remain in a glovebox? I'd never thought about it before, and was just wondering; thanks!

I do not know for sure, but this is how I understand things:

You have to have a permit to keep a concealed weapon, such as a gun in the glove box. Last I heard the weapon needs to be visible from at least three windows if you don't have a permit.

You would be well served to check the laws in your state - they vary - some require you to keep it in the glove box; others require it to be in view. Check at a local gunshop - they are interested in keeping guns in your hands and you out of jail so that you can buy more, and should be able to enlighten you as to the particulars of where you live.

Thanks! I live in Georgia, so it's probably fine if just I mount it to the hood of the car and attach the trigger to my horn. I'll post back here when I find out what the law says about concealing a gun in my car

Shotgun in trunk, firing pin assembly in pocket. It takes all of 15 seconds to reassemble it, and deals with all those nasty legality issues. As for pistols, I don't have my permit yet, so I don't worry about it.

If it's not in my IWB holster it's tucked under my right thigh.

The glovebox is probably not a good idea. Personally, if it's not within immediate access it's better off at home.

Everyone i know that has had a gun stolen, had it taken out of thier car. So now there is a new source of violent crime running around, thanks to their lack of forethought. Just something to think about.

Trunks are pretty much always safe correct? Being as you, as the driver, have no access to your trunk?

All I can say is the last place I would want a gun is my glove box, I can just see the situation unfolding...

*Gets pulled over for minor traffic infraction, cop approaches*
"License and registration please?"
*Opens glovebox*, and also a whole new can of worms, because you can be damn sure that cop is going to question about that gun.

I also live in the sticks. The only reason I've ever had to put a gun in my car is transporting it to the nearest shooting range, hunting spot, or shale pit (Where we practice our clay's).

I also second MSD, in that pulling the bolt/firing pin out of most guns is extremely simple (Be a bitch to clean properly if it wasnt) and quick.

That's interestring, every person I know that has had a gun stolen has had it stolen out of their home during a burglary or by a family member.

I have my carry permit, and i keep the gun under the cup holders... they can be removed, by pulling up, and there is just enough space under there to hide it.

Maybe we can add to the answers, the reasoning for transporting the gun in the car. Is it for travelling to hunting or gun ranges? or is an everyday companion (and why).

Just curious as to the motivation. I never considered it until now.

I carry a gun 99% of the timefor several reasons. One is to stop somebody that may want to hurt myself or my loved ones. The police do not have the ability, nor is it there job to protect me or my family 24 hours a day. They simply cannot be everywhere at all times. I live in a very rural area, known to have a healthy population of wildlife, some of it considered dangerous (mountain lion, coyote, bear). We also are frequently without 24 hour police patrols.
I have the more than the required training, the proper license, the necessary background checks (including fingerprinting, photographing and an FBI check) to allow me to carry a gun. I am well versed in the local laws regarding what is self defense, and when deadly force is or is not acceptable. I can tell you exactly when I have practiced (date and time), how many rounds I fired during practice, and where I practiced. I keep a journal of these things.
My children (ages 9 and 12) are well versed in gun safety, and have been taught a healthy respect for guns. My children do not have access to the guns in my home.
If you were to see me on the street, or in your place of business, you would never know that I was carrying a gun unless I had reason to use it.
While it is my hope that all gun owners are at least as responsible and vigilant about safety as I am, I know this is not the case.

I have holster in my door panel but my weapon is only in my car when I am in it. Other than that its on my hip, but I have a concealed carry permit.

I keep the holster in my door panel in case of a car jacking. They will see you reaching anywhere else, but you can slide the weapon outof a door panel holster without being seen.

We just got CCW permits here in C-Bus OH within the last couple years, and I only take my 9mm outside of the home to go to the range so I only really know what the guidelines are for me having it in the car and then it comes right back inside with me, and I never make any stops between the range and home.

just a curious Q to all you guys who 99% carry, and this could be just because I live in OH, but you say you have it in your car all the time, but what about when you walk up to a place (and you may not have them where you are at) where the big ass sticker or sign on the front door says no weapons....

There are places that it's against the law for me to take my gun (courthouses, post offices, schools etc.) I don't carry my gun into those places. Then there are places that have a no firearms sticker on the door (pawnshops, movie theaters, etc.). I ignore those signs. If I'm carrying concealed you won't know unless you need to know. The worst thing that's gonna happen if I am made, is that the management of the business is going to call the police, and the police are going to run me for warrants, check the status of my CCW, check my gun to make sure it's not stolen, and if the management so desires, ask me to leave.

Assuming the weapon is concealed they can probably run a check and discover you have a CCW. On that basis your CCW permits them to suspect you might be "packing." So they will "kindly" ask for your gun ... after they've secured you in cuffs with a knee in your back and your face in the ground.

But if you don't have a CCW then they'll probably do nothing as long as they can't see it.

So take comfort that our legislation assures that only people who are legally carrying firearms will be selectively punished.

(in case it isn't obvious I'm being sarcastic in my hyperbole - don't take it seriously - I'm just venting)
