Trunks are pretty much always safe correct? Being as you, as the driver, have no access to your trunk?
All I can say is the last place I would want a gun is my glove box, I can just see the situation unfolding...
*Gets pulled over for minor traffic infraction, cop approaches*
"License and registration please?"
*Opens glovebox*, and also a whole new can of worms, because you can be damn sure that cop is going to question about that gun.
I also live in the sticks. The only reason I've ever had to put a gun in my car is transporting it to the nearest shooting range, hunting spot, or shale pit (Where we practice our clay's).
I also second MSD, in that pulling the bolt/firing pin out of most guns is extremely simple (Be a bitch to clean properly if it wasnt) and quick.
