I'm buying a Shotgun

12 gauge, ambidexterous or left-handed, and somewhat 'unique'.

Anyone have any suggestions? I want to use it for Trap shooting and upland bird hunting primarily, maybe a little varmint hunting, and, possibly, I might want to switch the barrel out for a rifled one for deer hunting.

Winchester Model 12. You can get about any stock configuration you can imagine, barrels are interchangable, and they're collectors items to boot.

yea model 12's are great shotguns i have a 1912 which is a few years older than the regular 12's. [thats what i've been told anyway] there are companies who can still make barrels for slugs or trap shooting and its something "unique". if you dont care anything about the "collector" value of it [exchanging barrels or modifing it for trap] then its what your looking for.

Benelli Nova is pretty neat. It is also extremely reasonable for a Benelli.

Remington 870 is a good all around gun w/ tons of stock mods, barrels, etc. Its also a great price for someone starting out. Probably one of the most popular all-around guns. I even shot skeet with mine for a little more than a year. Although ive upgraded, its still a great gun. You'll find after using it, it becomes something of a sentimental item, and youll never want to sell it.

I'm going to throw a vote in for the Browning BPS. It has bottom ejection so there is no concern for right or left -hand. It has a lot of options and accessories are readily available. On the downside it is more expensive than a remington or winchester.

I've had mine for about 4 years and I will never go back to remington.

I've got a Mossberg 500A 12-ga. It's a pump gun, with interchangable barrels and screw-in chokes. Mine's a righty, dunno if they do a lefty or ambi, but I like the gun. It shoots VERY well. Last time out shooting clays, I hit 57/62, with 4 of the ones I missed being doubles. I use a Winchester white box 2-3/4" shell with 7/8oz of 7.5's on a modified choke.

For slugs, it places a gun full (6 shots) in a 3" circle at 50 yards with open sights. It has no scope provisions...you'd have to drill your own holes. I use Remington 3" shell with a 1oz slug. Packs a heavy punch, and is loud that way, but it'll knock down anything I need it to.

It's the most popular shotgun in the world. I have one as well, and love it.

I would have to go with the Remington 870 Express. Inexpensive, modular, upgradeable, proven, lots of stuff available for that unique look.

The Browning BPS is a great gun that has an ambidextrous thumb operated safety. Good solid gun that is quite reliable.

I personally use an 870 Remington Magnum and you couldn't pay me any amount of money to give it up. Sturdy as hell with a very effective yet simple action. Easy to clean and I can field strip it blind-folded.

Mossbergs are ok if you don't beat on them much or expect much quality. I sold guns for several years so I've shot nearly everything and heard all sorts of success/failure stories. Mossberg tops my list of shotguns not to buy.

well if you are left handed ill tell ya what ya need. find an Ithica Model 73 Featherlight. It loades and ejects straight down. So you dont have hulls flying out in front of your face when you are shooting. Its a pump thats a great hunting or skeet gun in any cal. i love my 20ga. while not the most ubertactacal gun out there, its perfect for any southpaw

as for others...870s are supurb weapons. i want one. mossburg 500 or 590s just as nice. both have different controls. as for longeativy i go again Aesik...mossy's are rugged as hell IMHO. we beat on my friends all the time hell it doesnt even get any sort of sock or case when it gets thrown into the trunk and it stays there 24/7. 870s are fine guns, mossies, or winchester 1100's.

i really recomend Ithica's for lefties tho

Have to second Bowlcut's opinion. I have an Ithaca and I am totally happy with it. My wife has a Remington 870; now that I have the Ithaca I have gotten used to the bottom ejecting shells and I don't enjoy the Rem 870 nearly as much.

My Ithaca is a NWTF model with a smooth bore, but it's a fine deer gun shooting rifled slugs.

I too have an ithaca. Model 37 featherlight, smooth slug barrel. But it is 16 gauge

I hate 16 gauge, it seems to be the perfect sized round but ammunition is 200% the cost of 12/20 gauge ammunition if you can even find it....
