Advice on which subs to buy
Ok, here is the setup I'm going to be running in my 92 accord, just need some help deciding on the subs, money isn't too much of an issue with em because with all the connections I've got I can get em for about the same price, so with that said here's the setup I have now and what will be in there.
Deck: Alpine CDA-9847 Door Speakers: Rockford Fosgate T162C with 200hz line bass filter Rear Speakers: Rockford Fosgate T162C with 200hz line bass filter Amp (that will be in there) : Rockford Fosgate P8002 2400W Max 400x2 @2ohms RMS. Going to be running at least 3 farads of caps with that, got one already. Here are the subs I'm thinking of, I can get some Kicker CompVR 03s from my friend in box, that have already been broken in and sound great hooked up to his kicker amp which is basically equal to that Fosgate Amp I listed. With these specs: Model CVR12 Outer Frame Diameter, in (cm) 12 1/2 (31.8) Nominal Impedance [Zn], ohm [per coil] 2 or 4 Power Handling Watts, Peak (RMS) 800 (400) Sensitivity [SPLo], dB @ 1W, 1m 86.7 Effective Frequency Range, Hz 25-500 Mounting Depth, in (cm) 6 3/16 (15.7) Hole Cut-Out Diameter, in (cm) 11 1/8 (28.3) Equivalent Volume [Vas], ft3 (L) 3.37 (95.37) Net Displacement, in3 (cc) 122.1 (2001) Moving Mass [Mms], oz (g) 5.52 (156.4) Magnet Weight, oz (kg) 47.05 (1.334) or should I go with 2 power acoustik subs, I havn't heard much about the company, but here are the specs on those. 1800 watts power handling 700 Watts RMS 200 oz. magnet 2” ASV voice coil SPL 91 dB Fs: 33.5 Hz Vas: 1.72 cu.ft. Qms: 4.66 Qes: 0.55 Qts: 0.4939 Xmax: 0.6" Sealed box: 1 cu. Ft. Ported box: 2.2 cu.. Ft. Tuning: 34 Hz Port Size: 4”(dia)x10.25”(length) # of ports:1 Any advice?

I thought this was gonna be a thread on the pros and cons of the Trident Class v. Typhoon Class submarines. Well...just phooey.

I've had some good experiences with Audiobahn.. they make a killer sub with a 1 ohm ratio and some amps with the same. I switched from JL audio to Audiobahn and the JL's weren't even close to as good. I'm not real up to date on the newer stuff out but that's my $.02 either way.

All I've owned for the past 10 years are Kicker subs and amps, and I can't see a reason to use anything else. Sound great, and I've never blown anything up. |

I've just never cared for their products. I've always found them to be more of a "boom" type line. Even their Solo-Baric line, which they purport to be their "SQ" type line is very muddy and non-musical sounding to me. They made such a big deal about the square Solo's when they came out. They marketed them under the philosophy that a square woofer (obviously) has more cone area, and therefore can produce greater output. What the forgot/failed to mention is that more cone area also calls for greater amplifier power, as their sensitivity went down. The square Solo's sound pretty crummy at low power and not much better at high power. The square Solo's are very much a "one note wonder." The last generation (those with the fully hemispherical cone) of the round Solo's were quite impressive. They sounded tight and musical, and could get beat your brains in loud if you asked them to. Also, their components tend to air a little bit on the side of brightness. Their amps have always been so-so to me. Certainly not the worst a person could do, but not the best either.

I'll be honest, I haven't had any experience with their square subs because my 3 round Solo 10's are indestructible and sound great so I really see no need to get new stuff. |

I would strongly recommend removing the "bass blocker" from the door speakers. A cutoff that high just isn't good. With a sub that is crossed over at 100Hz or lower, that's a big gap. I would sure hope that you don't cross the sub at 200Hz. That'd sound shitty at best. If those are 6.5" woofers in the door, 60-80Hz is a good range to cut them off at.

'Bass blockers' or 'caps' arent very effective to begin with due to the shallow roll-off.

I was hoping he'd amp the regular speakers, and then cut 'em off via the amp in the 80Hz range. A decent 5.25" speaker or larger can handle that just fine. Either way, a 200Hz cut off for the full range speakers is way too high.

actually the sound on the mids/highs is just great after the filters, they tended to produce a little too much bass for me and when i have it up some of the bass in the music if it is too much still leaks through a bit even with the filters. I like my mids/highs crisp with little bass in em (that's what woofers are for). and they are the highest grade of speakers fosgate makes which is not a component set which i don't want, but the alpine unit pushes them fine, planning on adding a PG 4 channel amp for the mids, and have recently replace my choice of amp to a PG R15.0:1 with a 15" Solobaric L7.

i have never really like the idea of caps. putting a yellow top battery under the hood or even a couple in the trunk has always been the biggest increase in power for me. i know its does end up costing more to put in, if you hook it up with a higher end switch so it wont drain the front batt while you are idling but even a 4.2 farad cap i had for awhile didnt save up enough power to meet my needs.and i had to make the change to a second then a third optima batt. also im not a fan of the newer rockford stuff, even tho i have and enjoy the rockford RAV-DVD2 7" in-dash DVD screen. i still wouldnt trust there new amp lines it just doesn't compare with some of the stuff rockford was putting out a couple years back. I guess what im trying to say is even tho i have been told by my rockford rep the stuff is still made in USA it has feel that every penny was shaved off the cost of making the amp just so it could be sold to the big box stores for cheaper. I trust and enjoy the JL and kicker lines alot more then even the higher end rockford.
