Dell...
My GF has a dell laptop(inspiron 8200) that she got as a graduation gift from her father...3 days ago she got a winxp kernel dump BSOD (fkernel inpage error - tdisk.sys) and shut if off and when it booted it said "Optical drive not found, Disk drive not found" so i turned it off and let it sit for a while and turned it back on and it worked fine for like 4 hours. then BSOD again same file, and the HD is making a clicking sound...restart, windows boots to that check disk screen "File segment 10294 unable to read" up to something like 50,000...so i call dell and ask wtf is going on and they say the disk is bad (which i figured) and they wont replace it because her warrenty expired in 2003...so i check the serial # on IBMs warrenty validation page and it comes up valid with an expire date of "See point of purchase" which makes me think dell uses used and refurbished shit...figured i'd share...

It's probably because Dell buys IBM parts in bulk and IBM leaves the warranty aspect of it up to Dell. Had it still been in Dell warranty then Dell would have replaced the IBM drive with the same model IBM drive. Unless you purchase a used and refurbished computer from Dell, all you get are new parts, though replacement parts I believe have a chance of being refurbished for any machine older than 30 days.

Soo, it is out of warranty. I don't know how many hours of use it has had, but, did you expect lifetime replacement? You didn't say how old it is. Before you go trashing a company for not giving you free parts, think how expensive the princesses computer would be if it was gauranteed for life.

Well, I know that Compaq used refurbished parts in their computers. Their take on it was "as long as it's under warranty it'd be replaced free". Of course this means that once it goes out of warranty your parts would die faster.
tenchi069 is probably right about the IBM/Dell agreement. If not then Dell is starting the decline sooner than I thought. Like Prince was saying, I've never had a HD die on me sooner than 3-4 years. Although there's always the chance that it'll happen.

Well they make them like they used to for me! I've never had a hard drive fail (knock on wood). I've had a couple of them shipped bad to begin with, but these stories of "my hard drive went bad after a year" are non-existant with my experiences.

I think you got unlucky overall. They sell those extended warranties on their hardware and they are somewhat reasonable for the hardware only with mail in support. The on site options get up there, but the mail in ones are sometimes reasonable. When you buy the computer, they ask you about 20 times to buy the warranty.
Overall- it should have lasted longer, but for a free warranty on a piece of fragile electronics, 1 year is reasonable. Most last WAY longer. Some don't. It is a gamble. I don't buy the warranties generally on Desktops (easier to fix something although I have taken now to building my own). Buying laptops, I consider it for sure. Bummer on the laptop. Wish we knew what was wrong (may not be the harddrive at all). If it is the hard drive - that is good news. Sounds like you can get it to run. Get the important data off of it and get a new drive. Should not run you too much money and Dell will help you buy the correct one that will fit nice and work. I bet you can make the problem go away for $100 or so. Heck - that is cheaper than the extended warrany. Maybe you just saved money.

I have gone through a number of hard drives, just like everyone else. If the warranty ran out there's a good chance the hard drive is just old from use. If a single dust particle gets inside your hard drive it's screwed. I seriously doubt Dell used a refurbished hard drive unless the entire system is refurbished. It just sucks because your warranty is up and you are stuck without a working pc. I recommend just going to Best Buy and get another hard drive to stick in there.
