I think you got unlucky overall. They sell those extended warranties on their hardware and they are somewhat reasonable for the hardware only with mail in support. The on site options get up there, but the mail in ones are sometimes reasonable. When you buy the computer, they ask you about 20 times to buy the warranty.
Overall- it should have lasted longer, but for a free warranty on a piece of fragile electronics, 1 year is reasonable. Most last WAY longer. Some don't. It is a gamble.
I don't buy the warranties generally on Desktops (easier to fix something although I have taken now to building my own). Buying laptops, I consider it for sure.
Bummer on the laptop. Wish we knew what was wrong (may not be the harddrive at all). If it is the hard drive - that is good news. Sounds like you can get it to run. Get the important data off of it and get a new drive. Should not run you too much money and Dell will help you buy the correct one that will fit nice and work. I bet you can make the problem go away for $100 or so. Heck - that is cheaper than the extended warrany. Maybe you just saved money.
