Home Theatre Placement-
I have recently moved to a new apartment. A small apartment, but a nice apartment. Due to space limitations, I need to place my tv in the corner, raised up about five feet. A 1x4 along the back edge of the tv already points it downward to make viewing a little easier. However, I have no idea what to do with my stereo/ mini home theatre system.
I can't find any resources on how to properly place the speakers in a corner. It is likely an audiophiles nightmare, but I really don't have any other place I can place the tv screen/center speaker. I have a 5.1 (center, sub, two forward, two surround) sony system. Does anyone have any advice on speaker placement or web-searching skills superior to mine, to find a resource on corners? Thanks. |

Alright. The description:
In the south-west corner of the room is a small gas fireplace. It has a flat triangular area on the top, 54" from the floor. It is on thie area that the tv sits. The sides of the triangle are 3', the diagonal is about 52". So to describe the west wall, the first 3 feet are fireplace, then there is 12" of wall and 36" of a single patio door. Beside the door is a column that protudes into the room 10" and is 22" wide. On the north side of this column is a 7' area with a 6' window centered in it, then the north wall, where out kitchen/dining room table is located. Back at the fireplace, describing the south wall. 3 feet taken by the fireplace, then 8 feet of wall, then the east wall. The east wall has 8" of wall, then 4' of double-bifold door storage closet. then another 12" of wall. After that it is a kitchen counter about 6 feet long with no upper cabinets. Couch is currently located in the center of the room beside the column. Two chairs in front of the closet. That's about all I can think of right now. Thanks. |

I would just buy some little brackets that they make for your brand and use them to mount your right and left fronts at least a few feet away to each side of tv, as close to listening level as possible. If you have to put them up high, no big deal, just angle them down. sub can go wherever, it really doesn't matter. What matters with the whole setup is where you will be sitting vs. where the tv is. for the surrounds, just put them to the side, a little bit behind you, same brackets will give you the most flexibility. Don't get too hung up about the corner and room diagonal issue - just experiment a little and improvise. Speaker stands might be better for some of the speaks. If you had a glass door, then you could put a speaker stand in front of the fixed pane, or a bracket above it.
I don't know which system you need or which brackets, but here are some: http://www.appliance-haven.com/Sony_WSWV10DS.html Wow! Really good pdf link here: http://www.sonystyle.com/intershopro...T-Guide1-1.pdf |

For a mini-stereo/basic HT, the biggie is the listening height. Ear level is the way to be, and you should be seated from the front speakers approximately as far away from them as they are from each other. They will typically need a slight toe in.
Believe me, I went through NIGHTMARISH issues with my stereo (used to be huge into hi-fi, until I decided to sink my money into cars. Meridian CD Players, Denon DVD players, custom tweaked Mirage OM 10's, etc etc). Those speakers are omnipolar and my room had terrible resonance as particular frequencies, so I spent days and days finding the right placement. |

thanks for all the imput. I still have no idea how I'm going to manage it. right now the speakers are situated on the old slim speaker stands that I have. The problem that arises is that the only place they work for remotely acceptable placement are in traffic areas and they just cant stay there.
The brackets are a good idea and would work for the left speaker, but on the right side of the tv the patio door really takes up the 3' of ideal placement. Surrounds are a whole other issue. At this point I'm trying to convince my girlfriend to get rid of one of our chairs and place the tv on the flat wall. Sure it eats up space and wastes the area above the fireplace, but it would make my dvd watching much better. |
