For a mini-stereo/basic HT, the biggie is the listening height. Ear level is the way to be, and you should be seated from the front speakers approximately as far away from them as they are from each other. They will typically need a slight toe in.
Believe me, I went through NIGHTMARISH issues with my stereo (used to be huge into hi-fi, until I decided to sink my money into cars. Meridian CD Players, Denon DVD players, custom tweaked Mirage OM 10's, etc etc). Those speakers are omnipolar and my room had terrible resonance as particular frequencies, so I spent days and days finding the right placement.
