Serious Modem Problem
I have an Intel v.90/.92 modem in my computer.
As soon as I plugged up a phone cable, I walked into another room to make sure nothing was wrong w/ the line. I picked up the phone and heard the "phone off the hook noise" then unpluged my computer phone cable and the sound was gone. (this is all while my computer is off). So i thought the problem was the modem, I was obviously wrong. Recieved a new modem, under warranty, and tried it out. Same problem. I can't connect because there is "no dial tone" due to a phone being "off the hook" (which there isn't) The only way I can get on the internet is to plug in the cable and immedietly connect. BUT, when I do connect, I get kicked off w/in 2 to three minutes. WHen I am connecting I hear static on the line. And lots of it. I need this fixed asap, and I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks everyone.... AMD xp-2400+ 512mb PC3200 PC 400 DDR MSI K7n-2 -L Delta mother board fx5200 graphics dvd cdrw 80gig, 7200 rpm Thanks...please help... cf213 |

do you have call waiting or is it a "partyline" ?
if so turn off the call waiting, software with the modem should help disbale call waiting. also check the connection protocals are correct and the time out settings are proper (ie the time the modem waits to connect and will terminate and retry after if unsuccessful) you can try using a differnt phone jack \ phone or call your isp \ phone company they should be able to help. cant think of anything else been on cable for too long :O)

What kind of modem is it?
Is it one of those CNR type modems? They don't plug into a PCI slot. Rather, they plug into a much smaller slot. Is the new modem the same type as the old modem? Can you try a real hardware modem? Aopen makes one, as does USR/3Com/whatever they are now. What version of windows? If it's 98, try reinstalling modem drivers and dial-up-networking. If it's XP, try rteinstalling modem drivers. If this doesn't work, you may also try disabling auto-dial on your internet connection, if it is enabled. Other than that, I have NO clue. Do you have a phone plugged into the other side of the modem? Try unplugging all of the other phones in the house when plugging this in. You shoudl also try the computer on another phone jack, and use a different cable between it and your computer.
