Best Smart Phone Applications
I'm getting a new cellphone. I bought a used blackberry 8700g off ebay just to get used used to the QWERTY keyboard several months ago and really like its OS. My cell plan is expiring soon and I know that apps can really transform a phone.
I'm not too familiar with the Windows Mobile OS but I assume that apps are abundant since its Windows related. I read that the iPhone App Store has the largest selection and since I don't have internet on my current BB I've never used BlackBerry App World. I don't mind switching OS to Windows Mobile 6 but if possible I would like to avoid getting an iPhone just bc everyone is getting one. Nonetheless, I can be swayed. So, Which phone has the best (largest selection, most free, easiest to find, etc.) mobile applications? FYI: I have my eyes on the Samsung Omnia 2 and the BB Storm 2 |

I would say the iPhone 3GS if your looking for the latest and greatest. Geeks obviously love this phone and have come out with a ton of mods for you to play with. Only go with a Windows Smartphone if you have very specific applications you need to run and your going to do some heavy-duty tasks on the go. I have the Blackberry Storm and its great. Simple, configurable, professional and it still has all the gadgets. You don't have to use App World to get apps either (also most apps need data capability). You can use your computer to put them on.
P.S. The Omnia II looks like a beast. Last edited by tcp; 07-12-2009 at 04:40 PM.. Reason: PS |

That would depend on what you need, what you want and what you'll use. Seriously take a look at the apps to determine if you really want a phone because it has more apps.
Without a question, the iPhone has the most apps but good luck finding the one you want if you've downloaded 100 apps. I've got a BB Curve and have downloaded about every app out there and I've whittled it down to a couple I've actually found useful. The useful programs are called programs on a BB instead of apps. Apps are genius marketing and nothing more. All you need is a free locator (they're all about the same), Google or whatever search engine you like and a couple of good time killing games, pay only if you must. Oh and I kinda enjoy texting with vlingo.

If you want free apps then look to android. Most apps are free and there are a lot of really good ones. It also has games but the good games tend to cost a little money. But it definitely has a lot more free apps than the iphone. Plus android doesn't sit as a gatekeeper to its apps so you get lots of apps that apple would never allow.

I'd get something from HTC that runs either Android or Windows Mobile...the Touch Pro is a good choice if you like a keyboard and Windows, or a Touch HD if you don't care about the keyboard, or obviously the G1(Dream) or whatever they're calling the Sapphire Magic (My touch? ugh). Go look at xda-developers.com for info on HTC goodness.

In related news, Apple just blocked the official google voice app and pulled all existing unofficial google voice apps. They also recently denied a google latitude app because "Users may confuse it with apples map application". In other words if you are looking for applications i'd avoid the iphone and go with android. Android's app store will likely pass apples within a year or 2 in terms of number of apps.
As for android phones it depends on where you are at and what your preferences are. If you want a physical keyboard go with the g1 (I suggest black as the keyboard is hard to read on the other phones under some lighting conditions). If you don't want a physical keyboard then go with mytouch3G or HTC hero (if you live in Europe). Otherwise if you wait a few months it is very likely that multiple android phones will be released within the next 3-6 months. |

I have the Omnia and it is a great phone, especially with custom firmware installed and Mobile Shell 3. I have always preferred Windows Mobile to BB, Palm or Iphone simply because it is so damned hackable. If there is something about the interface that you don't like, someone has found a hack around it or in the case of the Omnia, repackaged the entire OS in an easily downloadable and installable ROM.
