In related news, Apple just blocked the official google voice app and pulled all existing unofficial google voice apps. They also recently denied a google latitude app because "Users may confuse it with apples map application". In other words if you are looking for applications i'd avoid the iphone and go with android. Android's app store will likely pass apples within a year or 2 in terms of number of apps.
As for android phones it depends on where you are at and what your preferences are. If you want a physical keyboard go with the g1 (I suggest black as the keyboard is hard to read on the other phones under some lighting conditions). If you don't want a physical keyboard then go with mytouch3G or HTC hero (if you live in Europe).
Otherwise if you wait a few months it is very likely that multiple android phones will be released within the next 3-6 months.
