After 11,500 pictures, my digital camera passed away
It had a good life. Traveling around the world a few times. Abused by beach sand and rain. And the $250 or so I spent on it 4 years ago was worth it.
But now I'm in the market for a new camera. And I will need to get it by Saturday (or be able to borrow someone else's from work). The problem is that I don't know which one to get. I don't know which one is the best for me. A DSLR would probably take the best pictures, but I wouldn't be able to take it everywhere, and would feel like it is too obvious I'm taking a picture. A pocket sized camera would probably be what I am after if the picture quality is somewhat similar to the DSLR one. I guess what I am looking for is: - Small & compact, but needs a big lens/full frame sensor. This is the hardest part to find, if it even exists. I want to be able to slip it in a pocket and not be an obvious tourist. The smaller the better, but it still needs to take quality images. - Shouldn't cost more than $700. I don't want to have to be paranoid about losing it, breaking it, or getting it wet. - Good megapixel count, fast shutter speed, good zoom, good in low light situations (with motion). Good luck trying to find a camera that can do the last one. - Unbreakable and can handle the conditions. Can be taken in the sand of the beach or desert, hiking through the mountains, to the rain and water around lakes. Although I do have a waterproof bag now for a pocket-sized camera. -Remote control shutter (It would be nice, and better than using the timer to take pictures of myself) The first one I've found is this one: Leica Camera AG - Photography - D-Lux 3 But I'm sure there are others out there that are good too. Please give me some advice because I am probably going to use this for the next 10,000 pictures. |

wow. Don't get a DSLR. in 1 month, I took over 1500 shots with it. By the end of the year, i'll probably be at 10,000 already. DSLR is really addictive compared to just a point and shoot.
But as far as your camera, I suggest the canon powershots like the G9. awesome camera with really powerful settings.

I'd recommend the canon S5 IS, it offers some of the commodities and advanced settings of both a point and shoot and a DSLR, besides, it has a 12x optical zoom and shoots incredible video, buy it with a 16gb sdhc card (around $50) and you're set. If you insist on a Point and Shoot, I'd go with the canon G9. After you decide which camera you want, and if you chose a canon, you should visit the CHDK site (CHDK - CHDK Wiki), this firmware will let you make the most out of your canon camera.

In the past Digital Cameras, Digital Camera Reviews - The Imaging Resource! has been very helpful. There used to be a feature where one selected the prefrences (like format, zoom, memory type etc) and it would list "all" cameras that fitted, it has been replaced with something from MyProductAdvisor.com that doesn't work in my browser.

My Canon S3 IS has served me very well. Takes great pictures, even does well at movie clips. The S5 IS is just the updated version. Regardless, I would only buy Canon. But that's just personal preference. I'm sure Nikon, Sony, Kodak, etc are fine. I had an HP 2.3 MP camera that I wanted to throw in the ocean so I would never buy an HP again.

I'm sure the S5 is a good camera, but it just isn't the right size for me right now. The G9 has potential and so does the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. Neither of them is perfect though, but I'm not sure the perfect camera for me exists. And I'm not sure why remote controls for compact cameras are so hard to come by.
The Sigma SD1 was also in the running, but they didn't put a good enough lens on it. It could have been great if they would have pit a decent f2 or f2.8 lens on it and a 4x zoom. I'm sure I'll want the next release of it though. |

I have been thrilled with my Panasonic Lumix, now of course mine is an older model, but it has quite a few thousand pictures on it. Very few bad shots.
