The TFP Awards???
I wonder if there would be any interest in having a yearly faux awards show. Complete with nominees, voting, and awards.
Most Interesting, Most Controversial, Most Responses, etc. Thread (in different sections, and one overall winner) Best Writer - Male/Female Peoples Choice - Smartest, Funniest, Sexiest, etc. Rookie of the Year Award. Other categories you can think of... I don't know. I just thought it could be a fun idea. What do you think?

I dunno...it seems like a lot of work for what's going to basically amount to a popularity contest.
Besides, the last time I wore my tux, it was getting a little tight along the sides. Since I sure haven't lost any weight...it ain't no better.

Daoust - what's with you and this sort of competition?
you've a thread from july about 'top posters' or whatever .. and now this ... anyways, I understand the concept and point .. but, as BOR says ... popularity contests aren't really the point around here.

Sin,
What can I say? I like competition. Yeah, yeah, I'm so sick and tired of hearing about how 'this site is not about quantity, it's quality'. I get it. This idea of mine could reward quality too, you know. I think the mods are a little too dogmatic about the whole quality vs. quantity thing. It's not as big a deal as you make it.

Yes, the TFP has a cool kids clique... for some people, hischool never ended.

the problem with 'awards' though, it's the same people that would get recognized...
how would this add to quality?

That part might be true maleficent. I thought it would be a neat way of giving some recognition to some people who make TFP a great place. I wasn't thinking about it being a popularity contest, or "about the quantity". But never mind.
I think it would be interesting to see how many times the mods shit on people who posted ideas in this forum. I predict a high percentage of shitting on.

Daoust.. you've seen threads of this type before.. you see all the "crush" threads, the "who do you want to see naked threads" and so on.. and yeah while they may be fun..they don't really add to what TFP is (IMO). There's no need for this type of contest. If you can define how it would benefit the commuity as a whole then please do.
Keep smartin off to the mods.. lets see how popular that makes ya and on a side note.. I was very popular in HS.. |

I did not notice that. Thank you for your fine sleuthing. Now, if you don't mind, I'll wait for a Moderators opinion.

I think this isn't as bad of an idea as everyone paints it.
It could work to award even those who are not popular around here... it would have to be set up with nominations and then voting by PM and could not function like one of the poularity threads (kissing, crushes, etc.). It would mean alot of work for one or a couple of posters. It would work like the academy awards or something... The only thing is is would have to semi-annual or quarterly as one year is a very long time on the TFP. There are people that were here in the spring that are no longer here (banned, bored or gone)... I think the best thing this could do would be to introduce some of the members to some of the lesser know parts of the board.

It *might* work if things like 'cutest' or 'sweetest' were left out-there are intersite fan clubs as well as some of us less well received and one of the reasons I think those threads were locked was the inherent go-rounds of a very few singing each other's praises.
As many registered users and donors as there are here, it comes down to a small number of consistent contributors over a period of time. Who's to say that someone who only pops in once every few months and makes thought-provoking posts is a better person than one who can say much with 3 carefully chosen words every day?

If this were to happen I would suggest having few categories, and well argued cases as to why someone should win an award. For example, one category might be called "best fire-fighter." This could go to the member who most successfully puts out flame wars on the politics board before the mods do. Then a few quotes could be presented to back up the nomination.
I think awards like sexiest and funnest member would be a bad idea, as it would awaken the aforementioned clique/cool kids club. I wasn't in it in high-school, and I don't want to not be in it again.

I wasn't aware that the mods were required to squeal with delight over every idea the users came up with. Seems to me that they're entitled to their opinions just as we regular users are entitled to ours. If they think your idea is lousy, they should be able to say so without having to endure whining about how they're "shitting on" your idea. And frankly your idea is a lousy one. As others have pointed out, all it could possibly do is degenerate into a popularity contest. No one would vote objectively - it'd all be "well I really like userX so I'll vote for him." What's the point in that? Plus, message forums all over the internet are plagued with people spewing out post after bullshit post full of crap in order to attain some status, be it user rank, an avatar, or what have you. Somehow, and I still don't know how they pulled this off, the TFP administration has managed to keep that to a low roar despite the availability of avatars. Why tempt fate by adding one more element into the mix that would encourage posters to post for a reward rather than to further discussion? |

I'll tell ya what Daoust, if I thought this were a good idea (and I don't, but to each his own), I wouldn't ask permission. I'd just start the thread in tilted nonsense, collect the nominations via pm, then post the nominees for each category and collect the votes via pm. Then I'd post the results.
Whether or not I think it's a good idea shouldn't really mean two shits to you. If I don't like the idea, I simply don't have to participate. If the staff thinks it's a bad idea, and not in keeping with the spirit of the forum, they'll lock the thread. and politely ask you not to do it again. Seriously all the drama is not necessary. |

Like some people said, it'll be another popularity contest. TFP isn't a high school is it? Since when do adults run around voting for people because of the "cool" factor as other mentioned?
Yeah, there are award for movies, televisions, music but its done professionally. In our case, it'll be done the way voting for prom king and queen been done in high school...

Well, if nothing else, I'm glad this topic generated some discussion. And I'm also glad that some people liked the idea.
I think perhaps I'll leave my suggestions to myself from now on. I agree that not every suggestion is good, and some are downright stupid, but I think this idea is not ridiculously base. I think it has merit. Forgive me if I got a little snippy earlier. I just don't take rejection well. Now, I'm off to Tilted Trampoline, where some of our most valuable contributions, thought provoking threads, and educated banter can be found.

A-HA! I knew it wasn't a bad idea!
I think the best thing about it is that it will recognise those people who aren't necessarily in the cool kids group. Its aim is to recognise thoughful, meaninful contributions and contributors...the things that make TFP the awesome place that it is!

What about the people who make contributions daily and make great posts.. or people who donate to the site and work behind the scenes? What happens when they don't even get nominated? They leave because we had a stupid contest and TFP is poorer because of it. I'm sorry, I just don't see how/why this could benefit the TFP as a whole. IF it were to come to pass I wouldn't want any part of it and would hope it would be posted in nonsense. yes I'm a pessimist. |

Instead of awards, maybe something along the lines of a high school yearbook:
Most likely to go postal when stuck on an airplane with 100 grade school kids. Most likely to get arrested for looking under a Scotsman's kilt. Longest distance in the equipment free pole vault (OK, we know who the winner is here). |
