Funniest thing you ever saw in sports

The 7 yard punt .... Browns vs. Baltimore this Sunday. I think that pretty much shows how low Cleveland sports teams have truly sunk.

In baseball has to be when the fly ball hit Conseco on the head and bounced over the fence for a home run.

Ron Luciano told a story about a game he umpired against Earl Weaver's Orioles that I happened to be watching on TV one Saturday afternoon. During the game, an Oriole runner beat out the throw to first base and Luciano signalled him "safe." However, since he was standing sort of behind the Orioles' first base coach, he yelled "Out" just to see what would happen. The net result was that everybody in the ballpark saw the "safe" signal, but only the Orioles' first base coach heard the word "out," and nobody in the park could understand why he was arguing so violently with the umpire when his guy was called safe.

Earl Weaver came running out of the Oriole's dugout to back up his coach, but even he couldn't figure out what he was supposed to do since he'd clearly seen the runner called "safe."

It was pretty funny.

I saw a lot of crazy things watching minor league hockey here in Michigan. Back in the early days of the (now defunct) IHL, teams like Flint, Saginaw and Kalamazoo played to some pretty fierce rivalries.

One game I remember seeing the ref was calling such a bad game, the Flint coach finally decided to skate the entire bench over to the penalty box under protest. He left 4 skaters and the goalie on the ice for most of the third period. It was pretty funny seeing a dozen players sitting in a box built for about 3-4.

Another game saw Kalamazoo coach Ted Garvin so pissed at the ref he started throwing chairs, water bottles and even part of the bech out on the ice, almost hitting a linesman. He was ejected. /obvious.

I especially remember seeing many, many "bench-clearing" brawls, just like depicted in "Slapshot". It was pretty funny seeing the ref on the ice with notepad writing down penalties. Sometimes the announcement afterward took longer than the actual fight. "For Flint, number two, two minutes for slashing, two minutes for tripping, five minutes for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct and a game misconduct. Number four, two minutes for slashing..."

Ahh, the good ole days.

You might be thinking of the clip a few years back where Randy Johnson pitched the ball and it smacked right into a bird. Damn hilarious.

I don't know if this is funny or sad, but last season (or 2 seasons ago) the Saints kicker missed an extra point that would have put them in the wild card. With a few seconds on the clock and the Saints being down by a TD, they made a exceptional kick return filled with laterals for a TD; that is something you never see happen. In order to tie it though and take it into ot, they had to make the extra point, but the damn kicker somehow missed it. That has just got to be the biggest blow ever, I still found it funny though, in a sad way.

Hey, the "miraculous nonfumble" call was perfectly in line with the rules. If you don't like the rules, change 'em. Notice that they didn't change that rule. (I'll admit, I thought it was all over at that point as well. But I hadn't read the rulebook that closely.)

I also thought a really funny sports moment is when Degeneration X came out and made fun of the nation of domination.

I was once watching a early April Cubs game and the Chicago weather was quite cold. Harry Caray went on and on for what seemed like a few innings about how he was drinking the best coffee ever. You would have thought it was made by Budweiser. After a lot of gushing about this coffee, Steve Stone finally said, "Harry, that is tea." Harry made a quick joke and then proceeded to continue announcing like it was nothing. I was rolling on the damn floor laughing my ass off. God, I miss Harry.

A few years ago (or more) a football player was in the process of making a long run to the end zone. As he neared the 5 yard line, he started to showboat and taunt. Another player came up from behind, hit him, and he turned the ball over. It was actually kind of like DH in Playmakers when he taunts the player and has the ball knocked away, but the situation I'm referring to happened years ago.. Don't know the details, but I remember the situation.

After reading this thread, I'll agree about the Saints missed XP after the crazy trick play. That was bonkos.

Ahhhh, I forgot about this one. The showboat was Leon Lett of the Dallas Cowgirls and Don Beebe of the Buffalo Bills (another good laugh from the early 90's) was the player that tracked him down and swatted the ball out of his coke-powdered hands before good ol Leon could finish he victory dance into the end-zone. No scoring on the play but the Girls managed to hold on to the game, 52-17.

My fondest memory of Harry was when the Expos and later the Dodgers came to town and Mike Grudzielanek would be playing second base. Harry could never pronounce his name so he reverted to calling him G-man.

I've seen this one in the bloopers many times, but at a minor league baseball game, a guy hits a home run that just happens to break the passenger side window of a car driving by.

Also, anybody that got juked by Barry Sanders. It was so graceful and unbelievable it just made you smile.

you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth. without a doubt some of the best sound bytes came from him. especially when he was trashed. here are a couple that immediatley come to my mind.

the camera had a shot of two people kissing and Harry says
"i bet he kisses her on the strikes and she kisses him on the balls"
Harry had no idea what he had just said until stone started cracking up

and another

a latin player loses the ball in the sun and harry said something to the extent of
how do these mexican guys lose the ball in the sun? it's sunny there every day!

Funniest thing I recall was seeing a long fly ball bounce off Jose Consecos head over the fence for a homerun. He was playing right field, standing there with his glove outstretched at the wall and boink, right off his head for a homer. He didn't have a clue what happened. Then the center fielder comes running over pointing at him and laughing. It was an all time unforgettable moment. I still laugh when I think about it.

2nd funniest was the 7 yard punt by the Browns against the Ravens, or maybe it wasn't that funny. It just made me happy.

The punter (Last name of Ruebens I think) for Seattle in the late 80's or early 90's once punted the ball backwards 15 yards. So sad that it is hilarious.

Watch hockey long enough, especially below the NHL level, and you will see some of funniest stuff possible. Coaches going balistic at the referees are always the best.

That was Leon Lett in the Super Bowl (Cowboys vs. Bills), and that's not his most ridiculous play. The next year, the Cowboys were playing Miami on Thanksgiving Day, and it was snowing in Dallas. With about 15 seconds left in the game, Miami was down by 1 or 2 with a chance to kick a field goal to win the game. The kick was blocked, and it rolled to about the 5. Everyone on Dallas stopped and circled around it, waiting for the official to blow the play dead so that they would recover it...except for Leon Lett. He decided to go jump on the ball, and he slipped and kicked it. Miami wound up recovering, and their second field goal went in.

But the funniest play ever is Jose Canseco hitting a homer with his head. Even he couldn't stop laughing about it. Canseco was great, he didn't take himself as seriously as most athletes.

What comes to my mind is:
0) Shaq making a three pointer - a bank if memory serves - some years back.
1) Shaq dunking in the all-star game after being grabbed by four near players. He still went up and barely cleared the rim carrying all four of them up with him. Clyde Drexler was called for the foul.
2) Charles Barkley making a monster block on David Robinson right under the basket
ooh just thought of the playoffs last year when Kevin Garnett:
0) blocked/caught a shot and cradled it in the same move
1) blew by Chris Webber for an easy slam.

Wow I think that Browns/Steelers video posted above is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Garo Yupremian's (Redskins) attempted throw in the Super Bowl against the Dolphins was pretty funny. He tried to throw the ball, it slipped through his little hands, he tried to catch it, it bounced off him and went straight up in the air into the arms of a Dolphin who just bolted to the endzone.

The Leon Lett/Don Beebe play was good. What a hustle.

Anytime a kicker of either sort ventures downfield to try to make a tackle and ends up getting flattened by a block is a good laugh in my book.

Steelers and somebody else in the playoffs a few years ago, and the ref told the Steelers captain to call the coin flip for the overtime toss. He called tails, it was tails, but the ref misheard and gave the call to the other team. They won on their first possession. That was funny.

In baseball, a pitcher this year accidentally threw the baseball backwards halfway through his windup.

Also, in the 2003 baseball season, (the super-buff) Kyle Farnsworth of the Cubs hit pitcher (and frumpy looking guy) Paul Wilson of the Reds, who yelled at Farnsworth. They both ran at each other. Lets just say that afterwards the Cubs announcers solicited responses from Bears players on Farnsworth's impressive tackling technique.

A pitcher named Julian Tavarez pitched for the Cubs 5 or 6 years ago. He was really eccentric. One day he thought that his throws to first didn't feel too good. So every time a ball was hit back to him, he rolled it like a bowling ball to first base. It didn't make the other team too happy. Another time, in Spring Training of all times, he hit someone who charged the mound, and Tavarez tried (and failed spectacularly) to dropkick him! Also, I worked for the Cubs at the time as an usher. I was working a gate when Tavarez walked up in street clothes about 30 minutes before a game he was not scheduled to pitch. He gave me the "shush" sign and slunk in the park to go get dressed in the locker room. I imagine he really got chewed out that day.

Lastly, if you guys have never heard famous Orioles manager Earl Weaver's radio tirade, well, you are missing out on some of the best comedy ever.
