Fishing?
I looked for a place to post about fishing, and tilted sports seemed to be as good as anything.
Here's my quick backstory. My dad is big into hunting and fishing, but I grew up in the city and didn't end up doing it all that often. The trips I did go on taught me quite a bit, and now that I'm a bit older, I'm looking at picking it up a bit more. I consider myself lucky to live in Arkansas, at least when it comes to fishing. There are plenty of places to go. My plan is to go pick up some cheap gear, and find a bank somewhere and try to catch something. I think I can get most of what I need for under 50 bucks: Cheap rod and reel, hooks, 5 gallon bucket, pliers, small tackle-box, a couple of lures, and a cricket bucket. I'm not out to go catch a 10 pound bass or anything; I just want to catch a few fish. I'm hoping that there are a few people out there that can give me some more advice, or mabye clue me in to something I haven't thought of, or offer a bit of advice. All for now. Scipio

i've been a fly fisherman since i was a kid. it's the only kind of fishing i really enjoy. i don't like trolling at all, and sea fishing isn't my cup of tea. unfortunately, it would be pretty hard to start fly fishing for under 50 bucks. i bought a reel alone that cost about 90 bucks. i think it's worth it though. for me, there isn't a more relaxing sport.

I'd like to try fly fishing, but I don't really have the gear. If I had to guess, I'd expect to be able to find a decent rod and reel for $75-$150, plus other smaller stuff. I'll have to see what crap my dad has lying around. He doesn't fly fish really, but I bet he has a fly rod in the garage. I wouldn't need weighters if I fished from the bank, but that's part of the experience, isn't it?
I'm going to start simple enough. My plan is to try and go this weekend. Hopefully I'll have something to report.

I like fishing too. Here is a pike that got hooked this weekend. Great fly-in trip near the Deshka River in southcentral Alaska. 50+ fish the first day, then we focused on the larger fish and it dropped to 30 or so. My personal largest was 31 1/4, group largest was 37 3/4. I do believe that there is a 40+ in the lakes though.

Only do the sea fishing thing much and i love it. The albacore and yellowtail are starting to pick up again. Went a little too late last year, so the numbers were dwindling, as was the size. Caught teh boats largest that trip at 35 lbs. Those things are solid muscle too, and put up a rather enjoyable fight. me, my brother, and my dad had prolly 250+ lbs of fish after that trip, and none of us caught our limit. After gutting them and cleaning them real good (not the crappy job they do on the boat) we had ~60-80 lbs of usable Albacore Fillets.
Starting to get real excited too, as i have a trip planned this summer for a 2-day instead of a 1 day.

I won't give fishing tips, but I will give mindset tips. Fishing for me is not about winning or losing. Enjoy nature, relax and you will have a good time. Clear your mind and I would say stay away from caffene so you can be nice and mellow.
Good luck.

I went with my dad on saturday, and we caught between 100 and 150 bluegill, bream, crappie, and warmouth bass between the two of us, using crickets. The lake was kinda small, and so were the fish, so we only kept about 25 of them.
The trip was good, the rain held off, and it didn't get too hot. Next time, perhaps we'll catch some bigger ones and have enough to fry up and eat.

I love fishing!!! It is my favorite of many hobbies, I have invested thousands of dollars over the years, and i have to agree with some of the post above, about just injoying the time in the outdoors. Like i said i invest alot of money into it mostly tournament fishing, and i lost focus on the main thing about fishing which is having fun.
I just posted this in tfp motors. My new bass boat. |

Nice pike, Boo. =)
I'm also an avid fly-fisherman being in Alaska. I also do alot of deepsea fishing out of Seward, since I have a boat. Really, I enjoy that alot more, because more and more up here in Alaska every fishing spot has someone in it unless you can fly into it. And, I love catching some butts. River Runs Through It got me hooked on fly-fishing. I spend alot of time doing this in the Anchor for Steelhead. |

Is it still called fishing if one throws out the line but doesn't catch anything. Is it then called I went "throwing out the line"? LOL I am definitely a "throwing out the line" kinda guy. I haven't had much luck catching fish the few times I've been out.

Life long fisherman here. I'd have to say my favorite type is fly-fishing for rainbow trout while in a belly boat. We have lots of lakes in BC that allow for trophy rainbows with very little fishing pressure.
I've done a bit of bass fishing up here and down in Florida but the fish seemed kinda small. I would imagine a huge bass would be fun to catch. Salt water fishing for salmon, halibut and ling cod is fun, but I'll take a nice 4LB rainbow while casting a dry fly anyday. Here's a spring salmon I caught in a stream from last summer. A Fraser river sockeye.
