I believe it.

Cliff Floyd is made of glass.

I've never seen someone more prone to stupid injuries.

He injured himself tonight, jogging into 3rd base. He was just walking along and his ankle just gave out. Ow.

Also up for the "Glass" award.. Ken Griffey Jr.

How about the trio of Burnett, Prior, and Wood? Those guys are never healthy.

I think it's more in the way players train today than anything else. All the weight lifting and focusing on muscles and being in shape is good but there is a point when you can do too much in one area and hurt the rest of your body.

It's funny, back in the day, pitchers' schedules were not as rigid as they are now. They didn't have the same pitch counts, and they threw more innings. How did these guys work 300 innings/season and not blow out their arms?

Guys were throwing the same types of pitches, were they just not throwing as hard?

I don't know. Today, a complete game is so rare, but back in the day, players would pitch up to 150 pitches.

I think someone hinted at one reason in another thread -- steroids break down the body as much as they built it up.

I seriously doubt they throw harder today. Look at Bob Feller, Christie Mathewson, Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson, and so on.... Nor do I think it is mechanics, it's the training, the money (promotes laziness), perhaps the nightlife, and as Hal said maybe even the 'roids.

I've often pondered the same thing. Guys like Christy Matthewson and Walter Johnson pitching on WAY less rest than anyone today does, throwing smoke, and staying healthy. Were they just tougher back then? Talent level in general lower so that the premier guys stood out more? I don't know.

But look at guys like Prior and Wood. Ever since the 03 season when Dusty used them deep in games, with high pitch counts, time and time again, they've been hurt, or underwhelming. I have a hunch that Prior is just afraid to pitch with a sore arm. But Wood is a gamer. I think it seriously just tore up his arm. But what do I know?

BTW - Not a Cubs' fan, actually a ChiSox fan.

SLightly different.

Wood and Prior's careers were ruined by the man known as Dusty Baker. In 2003 throwing 100+ pitches, sometimes on 3 days rest. Jim Rome had Steve Stone on in the summer of 2004 and Steve Stone hit it right on the head. He said these 2 possibly great careers would be a farce after the 2003 NLCS.

He called it.

I have to lend some credence to that theory. The pitch counts those to faced, and the innings they threw (especially compared to their previous workloads) were insane. I don't know if either of them were QUITE as good as some people hoped they would be some day, but I firmly believe they were seriously hurt by the way they were managed that year.

Which is basically what Steve Stone said.

Sorry, the kid is up and didn't have time to finish my post, just summerized it, basically.
