I seriously doubt they throw harder today. Look at Bob Feller, Christie Mathewson, Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson, and so on.... Nor do I think it is mechanics, it's the training, the money (promotes laziness), perhaps the nightlife, and as Hal said maybe even the 'roids.
